--The Jet website doesn't have start times for the games after 11/13.
--I'm guessing a few might get moved to Sunday night thanks to Favre.
--Featured NFC division: the west. Could be worse. At Seattle hurts.
--Pennington in weeks 1 and 17 to bookend the season, as if playing him wouldn't be weird enough.
--Miami in New Jersey in late December can be pencilled in as a win
--That's a rough week 2 and 3. Beat Miami next week and avoid an 0-3 start.
--I like the bye week in the middle of the schedule, not week 5. I think that's the first bye week.
--Are any of your season-ticket holder friends (or you) planning on paying the PSLs?

]--The Jet website doesn't have start times for the games after 11/13.
that is strange
]--I'm guessing a few might get moved to Sunday night thanks to Favre.
i'd be happy with that, i prefer to see my team at night because this way i'm sure to get a game i'm interested in that night, and with multiple games to choose from i'm likely to get a good game at 1 and 4 as well.
]--Featured NFC division: the west. Could be worse. At Seattle hurts.
could be worse and in my opinion couldn't be better, but really the east is the only good division in the NFC, clearly the weaker league again this year.
]--Pennington in weeks 1 and 17 to bookend the season, as if playing him wouldn't be weird enough.
]--Miami in New Jersey in late December can be pencilled in as a win
i sure hope so
]--That's a rough week 2 and 3. Beat Miami next week and avoid an 0-3 start.
arizona is not a gimme either, the jets actually have a rough early schedule, the tone might be set by those back to back games with oakland and KC who both stink, win them both or expect not to make the playoffs.
]--I like the bye week in the middle of the schedule, not week 5. I think that's the first bye week.
yeah the week 5 bye sucks. i'd rather have the latest possible bye and be healthier/rested down the stretch
]--Are any of your season-ticket holder friends (or you) planning on paying the PSLs?

Good week 1 win for the Jets, and with Brady now potentially out for the season the Jets have a legitimate shot at winning the division.
The Patriots come to the meadowlands next sunday.

I didn't see the game but found this recounting of events amusing. Leave it to a football coach to be unable to find a guy capable of making the equivalent of a free throw among 50some (?) guys on the roster. This is from today's Snooze:

]The Jets seemed caught off guard, with no contingency plan for a PAT. On the sideline, backup QB Kellen Clemens, S Kerry Rhodes and P Ben Graham took practice kicks into the net. Actually, Graham worked on a drop kick. Even Favre was asked if he was capable of making a kick. No, he said. Mangini never went to the bullpen. "It's rare that you have a quality backup kicker in that situation," he said. When a reporter suggested that it was easy to kick a PAT, that a 12-year-old from a Punt, Pass & Kick competition could do the job, Mangini cracked, "Maybe I'll work out some of those 12-year-olds. Maybe they could do better."

I recently read the book* where writer Stephan Fatsis - the 43 y/o 'Scrabble' author guy whose athletic career involved HS soccer - spends an entire training camp with Denver (2006 I think) doing his best George Plimpton imitation as a writer "competing" for a spot on the roster as a kicker.

* I suddenly forget the name of the book ... not usually my type of read but it's not bad and as close as you're likely to get to an insider look at the ridiculously closed-off NFL

Anyway, it's amazing how specialized the kicking game is viewed in the NFL - even in the eyes of the kickers themselves. Their point, which they believe in a sort of crude sabermetric way of thinking involving the odds of scoring/preventing scorind based on field position over time, is that those few extra yards you'll get from having only your punter do the punting, only the FG-guy kick FGs, and even the trend towards having a designated kick-off guy just for the long kicks is worth the three seprerate roster spots.

Maybe the Jets should sign Fatsis.

Re-watching the various replays now of Brady getting hurt and what happens
afterwards, I never understood why they let players with leg injuries walk off
the field -- even if assisted. The knee is a complex area. Hobbling around on
it and then they walk him down those stairs, just seems fucking stupid to me.

They can cart the franchise off on a stretcher or a wheelchair?

Kornheiser, in my experience has been:

a bad guy to have a column in your local sports page.

a bad guy to have a humour column in your local style page.

a bad guy to have in your home city where you might run into him.

Just an un-funny blowhard in love with his voice that has somehow perssisted as more talented people have faded away. His very persistence gets him respect, as if being around a while suggests there's actual accomplishment there.

What the fuck Mangini. You get a lucky break running a kickoff to the 5 to get back in the game, and you give them a 45 yard field.

In the 4th quarter when the Jets had the ball third and short on the KC eleven, I turned to my daughter and said "They are either going to run the ball or do something stupid."

When they broke the huddle and I saw an empty backfield I knew something stupid it would be. Sure enough - 90 YD inmterception return.

Wow Mangini is just coaching like a jackass these days. 3rd and 11, Bills have the ball at the Jet 25. Incomplete pass and a 5 yard penalty against the Bills. Instead of letting it go to fourth down, Mangini takes the penalty, so of course on 3rd and 16 from the 30 the Bills get a first down.

I was thinking this, too. Any Titan fan out there who whines should just remember their team was down 27-6 when the flags started flying. Don't complain when your team is getting their asses kicked.

And it was an ass-kick, with no let up like in other ass-kicks like the Pat game or the Cardinal game. I believe.

Yesterday I went down to watch the games figuring the place would be dead since the Packers play tonight. The place was full of Packer fans watching and rooting for the Jets. A few of them were die-hard Favre fans who hated to see him go, but most of them were rooting for that 2nd round pick that it looks like Green Bay could get if the Jets make the playoffs.

I just found out our local CBS affiliate has picked up all of the Jets games this season as the "local" game. I think it works out that with the national broadcasts included, my area will have 13 Jets games this year. The only 3 we'll miss are when the Packers conflict.

I have no love for the Packers or the Jets, but found it strange on Sunday.

Eric Mangini is the Willie Randolph of NFL coaches. A bad in-game coach but still arrogant.

arrogant:
1. Having or displaying a sense of overbearing self-worth or self-importance.
2. Marked by or arising from a feeling or assumption of one's superiority toward others

] Jets-Dolphins game moved to 4:15 p.m. BY NEIL BEST | neil.best@newsday.com 11:33 AM EST, December 22, 2008 The NFL announced that Sunday's Dolphins-Jets, Jaguars-Ravens and Eagles-Cowboys games will be played at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, with the previously announced prime time game being Broncos-Chargers. The switch means that the Jets will know before they take the field whether they have a shot at the AFC East title. The Bills need to beat the Patriots in a 1 p.m. game to give the Jets a chance to win the division. The Jets will not know whether they have a shot at a wild card berth, as the Ravens are playing at the same time. It was important that the NFL have either the Pats or Ravens play at the same time as the Jets -- or after them -- so the Dolphins would not potentially enjoy the advantage of facing a team that is out of contention.

DONE!

] December 30, 2008 Jets Fire Mangini After Late-Season Collapse By GREG BISHOP and JOSHUA ROBINSON FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The Jets have fired Coach Eric Mangini, hours after the team completed a late-season swoon and was eliminated from playoff contention with a loss at home to the Miami Dolphins. The team is expected to announce the firing at a morning news conference, said a member of the team who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the move before it was officially announced. After three of the four seasons in his contract, Mangini, the youngest head coach in the N.F.L. at age 37, had a record of 23-26. And during the team’s 1-4 slide into ignominy at the end of this season, he made his share of decisions that were questioned. Now the precocious coach, who was sometimes called Mangenius, has been held accountable for failing to reach the postseason after the team acquired quarterback Brett Favre in the off-season. The speculation surrounding his job security started before Sunday. In one news conference last week, Mangini was even asked whether the rumors prevented him from focusing on Christmas with his family. And in a radio interview on WFAN, the former Jets star Joe Klecko called for his firing. “I think he’s lost them,” Klecko said, referring to the players. “I don’t think he’s done a good job with them.” The one player whose performance was most scrutinized was Favre, the probable future Hall of Famer who jolted the league and energized the Jets’ franchise in August when he joined the team. His arrival compelled the Jets to release Chad Pennington, who went on to sign with the Dolphins, who were 1-15 last season. Pennington led the Dolphins to an 11-5 record and the American Football Conference East division title, one of the biggest turnarounds in league history. It culminated with the stinging victory over the Jets on Sunday. Meanwhile, Favre performed poorly as the Jets collapsed late in the season, once again raising doubts that he would continue his career. The NFL Network reported Sunday that there had been discussions within the organization last week about how to handle Mangini’s future. The Jets, the NFL Network reported, even considered offering Mangini a one-year extension — it is rare for a team to let a coach simply work through the last year of a contract without any plans beyond it — but it never came. Mangini has been criticized for a lack of emotion in his coaching style, something that none of his players seemed to have a problem with. Fullback Tony Richardson said he had never seen Mangini show frustration. He does not storm around the practice fields, spew invective or flip over water coolers. “What’s the point of throwing something?” Richardson said. “We’re talking about grown men and guys who are paid to do a job.” It is a job that, on Sunday, Mangini seemed convinced would still be his next season. When asked whether he thought he would return, he responded crisply, “Yeah, I do,” his shortest answer of the news conference. In the sagging locker room, the Jets’ players rallied behind Mangini. “I don’t think he should shoulder a lot of the blame for the way this season has went,” wide receiver Laveranues Coles said. “Blame everybody.” Nose tackle Kris Jenkins bristled when Mangini’s future became a question. “I’ll never have anything bad to say about him,” he said. “You’ve got to understand this: This man has a position where, not only does he have to deal with the coaching staff, he has to deal with 53 egos every single day. He has to scout every single day. I don’t care what anybody says.’ ” Mangini was groomed under Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick. He was an assistant under Parcells with the Jets from 1997 to 1999, then spent six seasons with the New England Patriots.

Neither is a great comparison, but definitely more Willie than Art.

Howe was just a very pleasant man not cut out for the scrutiny that accompanies a high-profile NYC job.
Mangini, on the other hand, emitted a full dose of that Bellichek-ian standoffishness which he used to give the impression that the fans & media either didn't deserve an explanation of game questions or that he simply thought we were all too stupid to understand the logic and tactics. It was used sort of in the same way Willie would fall back on his; 'I've been a winner my whole life' defense, aka: if I'm doing it it must be right and therefore not my fault if it just happened not to work.

On the Jets, the only thing that can save Woody and Tannenbaum from themselves will be Brett retiring. Do it Brett! Thanks for the fun games this year but it's time to go. Not that Chad is ever going to be more than a divisional round loss, but Favre was a terrible decision. It looked great when they were 8-3 and I got suckered in with everyone else...but that's why everyone else and I are not running a football team.

I'm not surprised that the alleged word (from very shaky media sources) is that Mangini didn't want Favre. He is a smart football dude despite his lapses in the play calling of the Seattle game. Sanchez could go anywhere in the top half of the first round, it really depends who likes him (and maybe who likes him enough to trade up for him.)
Ainge, it should be remembered, was suspended for violating a drug policy. i don't know if it was weed or performance-enhancing stuff, but if it was the latter they probably won't want to count on him unless he wins the job in camp against Clemens and Ratliff.
