*Glavine, Mets take on reeling Giants* -------------------------------------- San Francisco (23-29) at Ny Mets (28-26), 1:20 pm EDT FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - One day later than expected, the San Francisco Giants will look to end a pair of skids when they visit the New York Mets for the opener of a three-game set Saturday. The series was scheduled to begin Friday evening, but the game was postponed before a pitch was ever thrown. The squads will play a doubleheader Sunday starting at 4:10 p.m. EDT. The Giants have lost seven straight games overall and five in a row at Shea Stadium dating to 2003. Noah Lowry (2-5, 5.37 ERA) gets the starting nod for San Francisco. The lefthander is coming off a solid outing a week ago, when he allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings but did not factor in a 5-3 loss to the San Diego Padres. The Giants dropped a 6-5 decision to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday, losing for the seventh time in their last eight road games. Nine-time All-Star Tom Glavine (3-5, 5.05) will start for the Mets. The 39-year-old lefthander is 18-13 with a 3.59 ERA lifetime against the Giants. Glavine allowed one run and eight hits in six innings in a 6-3 loss to the Florida Marlins on Sunday. The Mets, who have won five of their last seven games, are coming off a 6-1 victory Thursday over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Pedro Martinez allowed just one run and five hits in eight innings, striking out nine without issuing a walk.

TV guys mentioned BEFORE the play that Piazza, although having trouble throwing out runners, does a great job handling the pitchers, blocking balls in the dirt, and blocking the plate. He did a great job. He's a pretty good catcher, other than throwing. 2nd inning over -- 1-0 good guys!

Through three innings, it's Mets 1 - Giants sniffle. Cameron homered to right in the first. In the third, Beltran singled, Piazza singled him to third, and Floyd to end the inning. I really wanted to whip out the 'bang pow' on opening day.

Glavine hasn't pitched all that bad to warrant hat. In the fifth, Jose Reyes doubles, Cammeron walks, Piazza singles him home. Floyd singles Piazza to third and Wright knocks in Piazza. Lowry chased for Levine. Wright and Floyd double steal, Woodward K's, and Matsui gets intentionally walked and Glavine strands three. Met 4 - Giants 1

Glavine over the past month has been purty darn good. My confidence level in games that he starts has doubled in that time. By my count, including this game (through 6 innings) he has a 2.87 ERA in his last six starts. Not for nuthin', but Zambrano is at 2.90 over his last 5 starts as well.

Hey! Just like the old board, but way faster! And I guess this IGT was way more interesting. I'll just copy and paste: ----------------------------- Good game: big hit by Piazza, nice work by Bert and Heilman, Glavine was very good, defense was solid (including a Web gem from Woodward at first to catch a liner). LF, sorry I didn't see your post in the other thread that you guys would be there today until just now; we were up in the left field mezzanine. Good game, good win and Glavine looked fine.I liked the combination of Thom Brenneman and Jeff Torborg in the Fox TV booth.

Seeing everyone's avatar bigger is totally freaking me out. I was very pleased with Glavine today. I've been to two games this year at Shea, both Glavine starts: the blowout against the Phillies and this one. He seemed much more confident today, throwing strikes and working quickly. I still don't like the guy; I doubt I ever will. (He'll never be truly Metly.) My wife still hates him, with the "e". (For what it's worth, she has an unusual amount of disgust for Heilman too; apparently she has missed this entire season.) But Glavine (and Heilman, for that matter) both looked good today. GREAT day to be at the park.

We were at the game today. The Kazboos were not especially strong in person, but there were some, especially after his second flyout. He did get a good round of cheers after hustling out a single in the eighth. When F. Alou had Kaz walked to load 'em up for Glavine some yutz in front of me said something to his wife/gf about how they'd have been better off pitching to Kaz than Glavine. Haw haw. I then announced to my nephew three seats over that Kaz has 20 RBI already - why, that's as many as Reyes and Meintkewicz. I got this guy to turn around just enough to know I had made my point.

I think there are really very, very, very few reasons why you'd want your three-spot hitter, a guy you're paying $119 million, to bunt in an obvious RBI spot. I'm not against Carlos bunting; I'm fine with him doing it from time to time, when the Mets need a baserunner, or in a squeeze situation, or whatever. I don't know if that was the spot. If you're going to do it, you had better beat it out. And he didn't.
