Mets pins

soupcan
Jun 06 2005 07:12 AM

Dorso (Seawolf?) asked on the old, bad board if someone would post which of those Mets/NYTimes are available for purchase each day so I'm picking up the gauntlet.

Today, 6/6, there is a coupon in the Times sports section for the Pedro Martinez pin.

Whether that pin remains available after today ('While supplies last') I do not know.

Got the coupon. The list for the rest of the week, according to the ad:

Tuesday - Reyes
Wednesday - Wright
Thursday - Floyd
Friday - Heredia
Saturday - Valent

Friday's item should be a real hot item.*

*I hope I didn't break the sc meter. Everything here is so new.

Speaking of Valent, if my math is right, if he isn't claimed today, he will have cleared waivers by tomorrow.

I'll reiterate what I just posted on CPF1: if anyone from outside the area wants a specific pin or pins, PM or e-mail me or something and we'll work it out. Neither the Stop & Stop (yesterday) or the 7-11 (today) asked for the coupon, so it's all good.

i got my sunday paper and the album wasn't even there....was there something i'm missing or doing wrong..grr

seawolf17
Jun 07 2005 01:43 PM

The 7-11 today had a stack of the albums behind the counter; other stores probably will have them also. Ask, I guess. (Not that the "album" is any great shakes, but I guess it's someplace to stick the pins.)

seawolf17

Bong: Got you Reyes, Wright, Pedro.
IP: Got you Wright.

Jun 08 2005 11:04 AM

Cool - thanks :)

Since no good deed goes unpunished, and I'm willing to go to the end of the line on this one since I'm asking late, I would also take Piazza if you could get an extra.

E-mail me so I can send you $$$$

Jun 08 2005 11:45 AM

There was no coupon in the Times today

They gave me the Wright pin anyway, but that seems to be quite the fuck up.

seawolf17
Jun 12 2005 12:58 PM

Anyone get today's pin? Who is it? And, for that matter, did today's coupon have the list of the next couple of pins?

soupcan
Jun 13 2005 07:09 AM

Sunday was Beltran, today is Castro.

Did not see a list. Figured out that that the coupons have in fact been included in the papers. They just like to throw curveballs and put them in the Metro or Business sections.

Today's is in the Sports section though.

seawolf17
Jun 13 2005 07:16 AM

Crap. Missed Beltran. I'll run out at lunch.

Soup, does today's coupon list the next couple of pins?

soupcan
Jun 13 2005 07:19 AM

Don't know - already cut it out and redeemed it.

Pins! I need Pins, John! (Saltpeter, Abigail!)

i've completely missed the boat on this, and i'd love to get a complete set of the pins.

can anybody help me?

Jun 13 2005 10:13 AM

The only thing I can suggest is that you go to a retailer that sells the pins and just ask if he'll give you the ones you missed sans the coupon.

I know that they have extra albums and the pins are far from flying off the shelves.

They'll probably let you buy the pins.

Jun 13 2005 10:36 AM

Has anyone been spotted wearing the pins?

Batty31
Jun 13 2005 10:50 AM

Does anyone have the link to check which retailers are selling the pins?

seawolf17
Jun 13 2005 10:55 AM

Go to www.nytimes.com/pinset

You can put in your zip code.

Jun 13 2005 10:59 AM

Thanks to the link Seawolf provided, I bought some pins for myself today.

I e-mailed Seawolf to tell him that I would still purchase the Wright pin that he bought for me (it's hard to have too much of Mr. Wright). OTOH, if anyone else wants that one, I'll kindly step aside. Either way, thanks Seawolf - both for picking that up for me and for giving us the link so I can buy them for myself.

I just ran out to Superfresh and picked up my own. Cameron too.

Now I'm just waiting for Mr. Met. Kase - let me know if you want one of those.

Seawolf - thanks again for the link.

ScarletKnight41
Jun 27 2005 08:07 AM

What is this week's list?

Edgy DC
Jun 27 2005 08:16 AM

My mother mentioned last week that she and my dad had a really special gift for me. They had blown off my birthday and felt bad. I figured, don't kill yourself you know.

But she said my dad is having a really good time putting it together and it's not ready yet.

My money is on a Felix Heredia-enhanced complete set of Met pins.

seawolf17
Jun 27 2005 08:23 AM

If my mom knew they were doing these pins, she'd probably see a bin full of Felix Heredia pins on closeout sale somewhere for a quarter each and just buy me twenty of those.

She means well, but sometimes she doesn't quite get it.

Edgy DC
Jun 27 2005 08:32 AM

I hear you. (You should see my Christmas present.)

But my dad is on the job, also. We'll see. Hopes are not up.

Edgy, I haven't gotten my gift from my parents either. They keep calling and saying (hack, hack) how sick they are and (hack, hack) they'll be down when they (hack, hack) feel better in a few days...

I just wonder...

Nah

No, yesterday was the team pin.

The ad in the Times says 'zackly what I said it says.

ScarletKnight41
Jun 27 2005 11:20 AM

Ok. The list at Superfresh was wrong, then. Sorry.

soupcan
Jun 28 2005 09:39 AM

Actually something is wrong somewhere with the list of which pin gets distributed when.

The coupons say one thing but the distributors have a different list. At least the guy I get mine from had a different schedule.

He was cool and gave me Mr. Met and the team pin today sans coupons. All I need is Benson tomorrow and I'm completed.

Enough already with these things - at $3.25 a pop plus tax plus an extra newspaper a day to get two sets I dropped close to $200.00 on this 'project'.

I'm gambling that these things will become collectors items and in 10 years when I put 'em on ebay on some dope (a current or future Cranepooler perhaps?) will fork over soupcan jrs. freshman year tution.

Probably not the best odds on that one though. Makes me wonder who the real dope is.

Dear Edgy,

I hope you are still a Mets fan. I am.

Love to Cha Cha.

Love,

Twenty-five pins, plus the folder and an extra Pedro Martinez. The whole kit and caboodle (sp?) must have cost almost a hundred bucks.

seawolf17
Jul 14 2005 06:45 PM

You might want to consider selling your DeJean pin. I wish I'd bought a handful, considering the bin was full of them every time I went into the store.

Edgy, how much do you want for your extra Pedro pin?

Edgy DC
Sep 16 2005 09:23 PM

For you, Cooby, are you kidding? Your money's no good here.

On the other hand, if you have doubles in yearbooks any year, I've just begun trying to collect those.

Or whatever. Even that's too much. PM me with an offer.

cooby
Sep 16 2005 09:58 PM

Aw, I'm just kidding. I couldn't take away your parents' gift.

Besides, I think it sounds kind of cute that they got you an extra Pedro pin.

Actually I do have an extra Mets yearbook from either '72, '73, or '74. I can't remember which year it was, but they accidentally sent me two of them.

I know I only paid for one because I remember taping 5 quarters to a note card and sending them to Shea Stadium, Flushing NY, 11368.

I got a yearbook in the mail on two consecutive days and was very happy!

I'll dig around this weekend and see which one it is and we'll see if it is one that you need.

cooby
Sep 30 2005 10:17 AM

I'm sorry Edgy. I've had a very crummy past couple of months and this slipped my mind.

Here is the yearbook that I thought I had a duplicate of, but in fact, I have three! (maybe I got one three days in a row...)

If it is one that you need for your collection, of course you may have one, as my gift to you, as long as you don't mind that it smells a little cellar-y.

I dug these out last night, took them to bed, and flipped through all three of them to make sure one wasn't a revised edition or something, but they are all identical.

It's a beautiful yearbook, as they were back then, with a lot of wonderful local ads, pictures, and human touches.

If you decide you want it, look for these:

Dr. James Parks in tartan plaid pants

A very young Marty Noble, looks about 20-25

A very nice tribute to Ralph Kiner's HOF induction

Jerry Koosman and his fruit

Two page color spread on 1974 All Star Game

A whole lot of mutton chop sideburns

A Manufacturers Hanover bank ad: "Can't get to the bank by 3? Pitch your deposit in our after hours box!" No mention of needing a key, locked bag, or special contract with the bank.

Schafer Circle Of Sports beer ad on back page. Can looks just like the one laying in the woods behind my house. I really ought to rescue that before we move.

Yogi Berra, the "pixie-ish" pilot of the Mets

Anyhow, let me know if you are interested.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 30 2005 10:23 AM

Why does the yearbook smell like celery?

I do remember that they used to add vegetable scents to the yearbooks, but I thought that was only for the revised editions.

Edgy DC
Sep 30 2005 10:32 AM

Thanks, Coo. I do indeed have a hole at 1975.

Waddaya think, peeps? Do I owe her more than a Pedro pin for a 1975 Yabbuk?

Sep 30 2005 10:40 AM

No, really.

Here is something I forgot to mention.

Sometimes when looking through my old Mets stuff, I come across little bits of my childhood that I stuck in to one of the books and forgot about.

I found a TV Guide article from 1987 (hardly a child, I was well into my twenties by then) about MLB dads. It featured a few then-Mets, including Keith, Lee Mazzilli, and Rusty and a picture of Keith, Mr. Hernandez and Ozzie Smith
Also mentioned was 22 year old Barry Bonds

Kinda fun to find that stuff

And please, no pin

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 30 2005 11:01 AM

I heard Ozzie Smith on NPR the other day singing "Cupid."

Cupid, draw back your bow
And let your arrow go
Straight to
My lover's heart
For me
Nobody but me
