Saving the Archives

On the CPF, the message coobers posted included the following:

What about data being lost in topics that are replied to? The A Propos of Nothing thread was losing posts as soon as we could type them last week.

Is there any way to adjust posting levels so that the people who don't feel like starting from scratch won't have to?
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 06 2005 02:59 PM |
I've been working on the featured archives. It's tedious, but for a good cause.
|
Johnny Dickshot Jun 06 2005 03:09 PM |
I whaled a little more than half of Gen Archives X today, which relives such puketastic glories as the 2003 ALCS.
|
Edgy DC Jun 06 2005 03:21 PM |
Listen, I don't know if this is helping, but it's sort of what we're instructed to do. Would anybody who has time pick a forum that still has content and reply briefly to each survivig thread. My boss is riding me like Seabiscuit today. Annie, on the other hand, is trying to save your song parody forum.
|
seawolf17 Jun 06 2005 03:24 PM |
I took that statement to mean that any thread that had no replies is already gone; it seems silly to go through and just add replies to threads we can still see.
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 06 2005 03:25 PM |
Crap - I can't reply to this, because it's locked, and it's a classic. Can anyone help?
|
Edgy DC Jun 06 2005 03:38 PM |
Re-opened.
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 06 2005 04:08 PM |
I have about 20% of the first Featured Archives forum activated. It's tedious work at the best of times, but it's worth it to save the info - there are some treasures there.

Here's another locked one - http://p079.ezboard.com/fthecranepoolforumfrm11.showMessage?topicID=362.topic

I'm heading to the Member Promotion Forum to save it.
|
Edgy DC Jun 06 2005 05:25 PM |
Unlocked.
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 06 2005 05:27 PM |
Thanks. I think I'm almost halfway through the first featured archives.
|
Rockin' Doc Jun 06 2005 05:31 PM |
I finished respnding to what was left of the Members Promotion Forum. Most of the threads were pretty old and I think many of them were only partial threads. There were no responses after late 2004.
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 06 2005 05:33 PM |
Thanks RD - that's much appreciated :)
|
Rockin' Doc Jun 06 2005 05:39 PM |
I have decided to start on the Non-Baseball Forum Archives. There is 19 pages of threads, so it will take me quite a while to respond to all of them.
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 06 2005 05:50 PM |
I may need to shut down if this thunderstorm is as close as it seems. But I'll aim to finish the first Featured Archives by tomorrow.

I'm going to restore the rankings forum as best as possible. I already had

This is the thing that bugs me most about the cyber-tsunami - the fact that we are still losing things almost a week after the crash. How can they restore anything when they can't even stop the bleeding?
|
Swan Swan H Jun 06 2005 07:53 PM |
I'm starting on Featured Archives Vol. II. Didn't feel like studying for the GMAT anyway.
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 06 2005 08:00 PM |
Thanks gf!

Swan Swan H Jun 06 2005 08:53 PM |
I think I killed it.
|
Rockin' Doc Jun 06 2005 09:26 PM |
Now I'm a little confused. Are we supposed to be responding to the threads that still exist or are we to copy and paste things here? I'm willing to help out as best I can, but I'm not really sure what it is I should be doing.
|
Edgy DC Jun 06 2005 09:29 PM |
I don't understand either, but the collected wisdom of Widey, Cooby, and myself, reading the obscure missives of Mr. Labatt, has concluded that the best plan is to respond to whatever remains.
|
Johnny Dickshot Jun 06 2005 09:33 PM |
I'm still working on X. Instead of replying with a regular "r" on most threads I'm getting a snarky last word in.
|
Swan Swan H Jun 06 2005 09:39 PM |
I started with the lyrics to 'Country Feedback,' realized I missed a verse, then went mostly for non sequitur. I didn't actually read most of the threads, so I have no idea what I was replying to. Might actually be funny, but highly unlikely. Then I started reading some of the threads, which slowed me down a lot.

My boss is riding me like Seabiscuit today Oooh, Edgy.

Edgy DC Jun 06 2005 10:18 PM |
And not if it doesn't. What a faithful crew.

I'm on p. 17 out of 19. If I don't finish before bed, I'll finish off the forum by tomorrow morning,
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 06 2005 10:57 PM |
Except for one locked thread at the end, I have activated every thread in the first Featured Archives forum.

I've done half of VIII --it looked like no one was working on it and I didn't want to get in anyone's way. I also did the song parody forum because that's special to me. I'd'a done more but I a) did a KTE and b) went over and helped a guy with his DNS servers.
|
Johnny Dickshot Jun 07 2005 07:57 AM |
X is done! I'll move onto the next one that doesn't look like it's being done.
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 07 2005 09:07 AM |
I'm taking on The Red Light Forum. Assuming ezBoard speeds up to a snail's pace, I should be able to knock that off this morining.
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 07 2005 09:18 AM |
OK - I finished the Red Light Forum.
|
Edgy DC Jun 07 2005 09:18 AM |
Weird stuff! I found one thread in the prediction archives. I responded to it, and the page re-opened with six more threads.
|
Elster88 Jun 07 2005 09:23 AM |
Nice!!! I've been wondering all along how the main forum page still lists the total number of posts. Maybe they are still all there somewhere ripe to be recovered.
|
Edgy DC Jun 07 2005 09:36 AM |
I couldn't figure it out. I hoped it would be like Hercules' hydra, and, every time I responded to one of the recently restored threads, six more would jump out, but it wasn't meant to be.

I finished Featured Archives III, and I'm going to take a break from the project. My shoulder is sore from this!

Working through the injury, I just activated the remains of the Adopt-a-Prospect forum.

ScarletKnight41, digital pirate tearing a long arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr through the CPF archives.
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 07 2005 05:25 PM |
I'll save talk like that for September 19th ;)
|
SwitchHitter Jun 07 2005 06:25 PM |
VIII is done. This is harder than it looks with a houseful of kids. Especially with not enough computers to go around. I had to actually read a book for awhile today because all of the computers were in use except my son's (which I didn't remember my password on -- he was at summer school). The game will be on soon, so I'm off to watch -- no computers in the rooms with TVs.
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 08 2005 12:36 PM |
Do we still need to do this?
|
cooby Jun 08 2005 12:41 PM |

Swan Swan H Jun 08 2005 12:45 PM |
Nice pants.

ScarletKnight41 Jun 08 2005 06:25 PM |
With the exception of one locked thread, cooby got the win and I got the save in activating General Archives IX
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 08 2005 08:53 PM |
This evening I knocked off the Permanent Links forum.
|
cooby Jun 08 2005 08:53 PM |
Scarlett, I believe you did the majority of the work!
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 08 2005 09:28 PM |
It was a joint effort, for sure.
|
cooby Jun 08 2005 09:29 PM |
Some of my joints hurt.
