"He's got to deal with it. All of it. It's good for him. And the better he does, the more I am going to give him to do. He will carry all my bags as long as I'm here. I read his fan mail sometimes - girls are asking to marry him - and it makes me sick. One of these days, I swear I'm going to smack him."

some great quotes from tonights game...
|
Johnny Dickshot Jun 08 2005 05:17 AM |
"The thing about athletes is that we work to hard to earn our money. I got kids to feed. I can't let him take money off my table. When you do stupid stuff like that, you're taking chances on hurting people, taking a chance on losing people for games. For just the sake of what - I don't want to face you? So put me on. Four pitches. It's simple. But when our egos get in the way, that's how people end up in prisons, end up dead. It's unfortunate."

Maybe he's mad? He hits a grand slam off Oswalt then gets drilled twice as a result, yet has no ability to get any one-on-one recourse without hurting the team.

Also a bit of a difference between Sprewell complaining about having to struggle to feed the family without an immediate contract extension, and Cliff saying that he doesn't want to do it with a possible career-ending injury lurking.

Everett is a moron. But he does have a right to his opinions as misinformed as they might be. I don't agree with his views on gays but what irks me is that he apparently thinks most fans are stupid. But I guess most fans think he's stupid too.

Tom Glavine alluding to Wright's catch Saturday night to retire Raul Ibanez.
|
Edgy DC Jun 20 2005 09:10 AM |
Let's all remember, lest history forget, that David Wright dove into the stands, caught a ball and hurt himself. Derek Jeter, on the other hand, caught a ball, dove into the stands, and hurt himself.
|
TheOldMole Jun 20 2005 10:06 AM |
Perhaps it was Teddy Randazzo?
|
Centerfield Jun 20 2005 11:41 AM |
I may be in the minority with this, and I'm not sure I've worked out the logic in my head yet, but I think David Wright diving into the stands there was a bad play. The risk/reward is just not worth it. I understand there are "hustle" plays and it's important to go all out...but risking injury with the team already hobbled as it was just doesn't seem very smart to me. I understand playing hard, but throwing yourself into the stands, I would say, is probably not worth the risk of injury it imposes.
|
metirish Jun 20 2005 11:44 AM |
I doubt Wright had the time to go through all that thinking, it was a reaction play kinda, great play IMO.

Do as I say, not as I do? Good point. My mistake was really a succession of brain farts. But once my mistake was pointed out to me, I knew what the right name was. 1) This is a quotes thread. This is the one thatcame to mind. But she constantly demonstrates her lack of knowledge (or is it interest?) in the other major league team less than 10 miles away. 2) As for the fumbling of names, unfortunatley, Kiner had a stroke. And at least he has some charm and great stories. What's Suzyn's excuse? 3) She deserves it anyhow, for crimes against (baseball) humanity. Later

I say the Mets' best position player ever is going to be conceived this coming Wednesday afternoon in Tupelo, Mississippi. He will be named Frederic Tutenkhamin O'Grady shortly after being born prematurely next May, and will grow up to be a powerhitting Gold Glove secondbaseman. "Tut" will have a 23 year career, and his best season will be his 19th year in MLB, at the age of 40. He will make Wright and Strawberry look like two skin irritations on the ass of a water buffalo.

Kaz Matsui made a heads-up play by stopping short of Counsell, and in the rundown that ensued, the Mets scored not one, but two runs before Matsui was eventually tagged to complete the double play. At the start, Counsell tossed to first to get Beltran, but Matsui duped the others to scramble after him, and they totally lost track of the other runners - with Ramon Castro rumbling in from third base and Reyes coming all the way around from second.
