"He's got to deal with it. All of it. It's good for him. And the better he does, the more I am going to give him to do. He will carry all my bags as long as I'm here. I read his fan mail sometimes - girls are asking to marry him - and it makes me sick. One of these days, I swear I'm going to smack him."

He's my left-handed guy, so I'm going to bring him in against left-handers and hope he produces. That's the bottom line. I was only half-listening to Baseball Tonight last night, so this may be more of a paraphrase:
John Kruk:
"I'm sick of hearing about how the American League teams are at a disadvantage when playing in National League ballparks. If they want to get their bats into the lineup, then teach them how to play a position. That (ED NOTE: the AL rule that allows some players to only bat) is NOT a position."

some great quotes from tonights game...

Pedro on the no-hitter..

"I didn't really realize it until I heard the fans continue to clap after he rounded second," Martinez said. "I never looked at the scoreboard. I'm normally looking everywhere else, but not the scoreboard."

Willie on the Mets never having a no-hitter...

"I didn't know that," Randolph said. "I thought maybe Tom Seaver did back in the day because I used to watch him or Jerry Koosman because they were lights out."

Peterson on Pedro...
"He's got two great swing-and-miss pitches," pitching coach Rick Peterson said. "A Buggs Bunny changeup and a Bugs Bunny curveball."

"The thing about athletes is that we work to hard to earn our money. I got kids to feed. I can't let him take money off my table. When you do stupid stuff like that, you're taking chances on hurting people, taking a chance on losing people for games. For just the sake of what - I don't want to face you? So put me on. Four pitches. It's simple. But when our egos get in the way, that's how people end up in prisons, end up dead. It's unfortunate."

I didn't realize Latrell Sprewell plays left field for the Mets. My opinion of him will be tainted forever. I don't want to see people get hurt, but he's got enough money to feed his kids and all of their kids if he retired today. Maybe he was just mad and he's not as big of a jackass as this quote makes him seem.

Jun 08 2005 07:32 AM

I understand your feeling insulted when guys like Sprewell and Floyd talk about putting food on the table but remember it is just a metaphor - they do not mean it literally, how could they possibly?

Yes its a bad metaphor for someone who is making tens of millions of dollars per year but still.

And besides that what one makes and what one spends is all relative. I know lots of wealthy people who live paycheck to paycheck because as they earn more they lifestyles increase exponentially.

Will these people ever be homesless and destitute? No, but if somehow their current earning status was reduced or stopped completely drastic changes would have to be made.

Don't assume that just because some make what appears to be a boatload of money that their lives are perfect.

Money doesn't buy happiness. It just makes it easier to attain by removing a lot of obstacles.

Don't be so hard on Cliffy - the adrenaline was still pumpin'

Maybe he's mad? He hits a grand slam off Oswalt then gets drilled twice as a result, yet has no ability to get any one-on-one recourse without hurting the team.

So, he stays on the field, does the right thing for his team, and talks later. Of course he was mad. This asswipe has thrown at him twice, and yesterday's was particularly egregious since it was clearly done in a situation where Floyd would have been intentionally walked.

Elster88

Also a bit of a difference between Sprewell complaining about having to struggle to feed the family without an immediate contract extension, and Cliff saying that he doesn't want to do it with a possible career-ending injury lurking.
It's still an over-used cliche, but there are differences in circumstances.

I was going to start an all-new "All Purpose Carl Everett Is A Moron Thread," but I figured I'd just add this here instead:

Chicago White Sox designated hitter Carl Everett, infamous for his run-in with umpire Ron Kulpa in 2000 while playing for the Boston Red Sox, sounds off on a number of issues in the July edition of Maxim magazine. Some of the highlights, as reported by The Chicago Tribune.

• Everett has had gay teammates, whom he has accepted, but: "Gays being gay is wrong. Two women can't produce a baby, two men can't produce a baby, so it's not how it's supposed to be. ... I don't believe in gay marriages. I don't believe in being gay."

• Wrigley Field is the worst park in the majors: "They need to implode Wrigley."

• Most baseball fans don't know diddly: "Fan is short for fanatic -- he's crazy about something he really doesn't know about. And it's proven that 99 percent of baseball fans have no idea what they're watching."

• Jose Canseco is a "bitter, ignorant individual."

• The congressional hearings examining steroid use were a waste: "We have a war going on -- I have family in that war -- yet we're talking about steroids. ... If everybody in the world got on steroids, we'll still lose more kids to a war than we will from steroids."

I'll give him Canseco, and he's probably within ten percent of correct on the fan statement, but he's still a moron.

Everett is a moron. But he does have a right to his opinions as misinformed as they might be. I don't agree with his views on gays but what irks me is that he apparently thinks most fans are stupid. But I guess most fans think he's stupid too.

I'm all for players being honest about their opinions, especially since so many of them always say nothing but the "right" things that are bland and give away nothing of what they really think, but at the same time they've also got to know when to shut up too.

Actually, he proved he can think outside the box.
He took a famous Rey Ordonez quote ("New York fans are stupid") and expanded to all baseball fans. It takes a special person to be able to think that globally. (insert sarcastic emoticon here)

But, he is right when he says that Congress has more important things to think about than the use of steroids in sports.

As for the other stuff - I pass.

I may be in the minority with this, and I'm not sure I've worked out the logic in my head yet, but I think David Wright diving into the stands there was a bad play. The risk/reward is just not worth it. I understand there are "hustle" plays and it's important to go all out...but risking injury with the team already hobbled as it was just doesn't seem very smart to me. I understand playing hard, but throwing yourself into the stands, I would say, is probably not worth the risk of injury it imposes.

Other peeps unafraid of the Yankees' "Warrior" stance:

Turnbull A.C.'s
Turnbull A.C.'sThe Turnbulls are the first gang the Warriors encounter. The Warriors have to run away from them to get on the train home.
Turnbull A.C.'sThe Turnbulls are a mixed bunch who hang around on old school buses that have been painted black. They carry chains and planks of wood for weapons.
Orphans
OrphansAfter the Warriors escape from the Turnbull A.C.'s, they think they are home free. Unfortunately, a train station is on fire forcing The Warriors to walk through enemy territory. They meet the Orphans.
OrphansThe Orphans are not very well known (and are very low class), and didn't even know about the big meeting up at The Bronx and are not on the Gramercy Riff's Network. They are armed with razor blades. Mercy decides to leave the Orphans and join The Warriors.
Baseball Furies
Baseball FuriesThe Baseball Furies are one of the most popular gangs. After a brief escape from cops, Swan, Ajax, Snow and Cowboy run straight into these guys.
Baseball FuriesThe Furies wear baseball gear and carry baseball bats which they are keen to swing. The leader shown here fights Ajax and shows that he can be quite nifty with a bat.
Lizzies
LizziesThis all-female gang is waiting on the station platform when Vermin, Cochise and Rembrandt arrive. They end up going back to The Lizzies flat where The Lizzies seduce The Warriors except Rembrandt who suspects that something is going on.
LizziesAt the flat, the The Lizzies suddenly lock the door and announce that The Warriors shot Cyrus which is when they find out that they were framed. The Lizzies try to shoot them but only manage to cut Rembrandt's arm with a knife.
Punks
PunksThe Punks hang out in a subway station. The lead guy (on the right) wears rollerskates and skates around the station. They look a bit like farmers in the dungarees.
PunksWielding chains and baseball bats, they fight The Warriors in the men's room. This is one of the best fight scenes in the movie, with people flying into mirrors and through doors.
The Rogues
The RoguesThe Rogues appear throughout the movie as Luther (pictured centre), was the one who shot Cyrus. He framed The Warriors for the crime and for the rest of the night, they are on the hunt for The Warriors so they can kill them. Not the smartest bunch!
Gramercy Riffs
Gramercy RiffsThe Riffs are the largest gang in the city and Cyrus was their leader until he got shot. Understandably, they want to find those responsible and bring them to justice. Masai became the leader when Cyrus died.
Boppers
BoppersThe Boppers wear purple waistcoats, cream-coloured trousers and hats. I guess they think they are groovy boppers!
High Hats
High HatsThese 'clowns' wear white face paint, red and black tops, with suspender trousers.
Electric Eliminators
Electric EliminatorsThese guys are easy to spot in the park, thanks to their bright yellow tops!
Savage Huns
Savage HunsIt is assumed that these guys are called the Savage Huns. They wear green shirts and have brown pointy hats.
Moon Runners
Moon RunnersThe Moonrunners wear space style-suits which are silver. Here is a quick glimpse of their logo.
Satans Mothers
Satans MothersThe Satans Mothers can be seen hanging around at the meeting in The Bronx.

The Gun Hill Dancers: One of the baddest hoods in the Bronx and their home team is called the Dancers?

The Imps: I've got no real comment here. Just a great name.

The Knockdowns: Baseball connection.

The Knuckles: Baseball connection.

The Lizzies: They all look like Gilda Radner characters.

The Locos: One of my local outfits is called Los Vados Locos. I'll show you their markings when you're down here. I think La Raza has them on the run.

The Meatpackers: Meet the Go Hards.

The Napoleons: Were these all short guys?

The Nickel Steaks: Huh?

The Phillies: Ooh, I'm scared.

The Rogues: Locals jumped by a Pogues cover band. Film at eleven.

The Turks: Mets connection!

The Van Cortlandt Rangers: The terror of Manhattan College.

The Yo-Yos: Smacked you down with cellos and bows.

I say the Mets' best position player ever is going to be conceived this coming Wednesday afternoon in Tupelo, Mississippi. He will be named Frederic Tutenkhamin O'Grady shortly after being born prematurely next May, and will grow up to be a powerhitting Gold Glove secondbaseman. ]To not even get to first base when the ball is caught by an outfielder, that's just unacceptable to me. That's not right. It's 4-5 at bats a game -- 4-5 sprints. That's not asking that much.

MLB sent out a questionnaire to the players. One question was, "What was the most difficult thing you've had to do as a major leaguer?"

Seattle first baseman Mike Hegan answered "trying to convince your wife why she needs a Pennicilin shot for your kidney infection."

Love it. It's even better that Jeter had such a good game--that's sure to foster lots of speculation in the rags about a rift.

I said it last year, and I'll say it again: A-Rod can't handle the pressure. Normally I don't place too much stock in shit like that, but in big games both last year and this year he never looked comfortable at the plate.

And

](There also has been poor use of the Rally Monkey. There finally was a little electricity in the park after reliever Kevin Gregg struck out the side in the top of the seventh inning, and it would have been a great situation for the Monkey. Instead, the Angels held the Monkey until the eighth inning when the bottom of the order was due up. Was this delay due to the mandatory playing of "God Bless America" during the seventh inning stretch or was it another disturbing sign of baseball's increasing specialization? If Rally Monkeys are refusing to work middle relief when the team trails by three runs or more, we might as well fold up shop and go home.)

]With the kind of jubilation it reserves for its special heroes, New York went pleasantly mad when the Mets won. From the sleek skyscrapers of Wall Street, where a spontaneous tickertape blizzard greeted the victory, to the undistinguished bars of a hundred neighborhoods, where the toasts were in draft beer, the shouted cry was: "We're No. 1!" Teachers suspended classes because their transistor- equipped students were not paying attention anyway; bosses closed offices early for the same reason, and even policemen shrugged happily as they despaired of keeping order in the streets.

I really liked Cameron and hate that we traded him. He always seemed to be a good guy that played hard and truly loved the game. He has done nothing to diminish that perception of him since his trade.

Now that Delgado is in the clean up slot, Cameron would have fit nicely batting 6th or 7th spot and playing right field. Maybe the money saved by moving Cameron helped to make the Delgado trade possible.

Now I realize this has nothing to do with baseball. But I wasn't sure that I could live with myself if such a profound statement by such a towering modern figure weren't shared with as many people as possible. I didn't want any of you to miss out on this important change.
Just speaking for myself mind you, this statement may be the most moving since the members of 'KISS' declared; "we had to take the makeup off out of respect for the music".
Of course they later put the makeup back on so maybe that one wasn't so profound after all. But at least we know that Sean/Puffy/P/Diddy won't do something like change his name again. After all, "it's a new era".
