Outfielder clears waivers and re-signs with Mets

By Ben Couch / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Outfielder Eric Valent cleared waivers and was re-signed to a Minor League contract, manager Willie Randolph said on Tuesday. Valent, who will report to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, surprised many with his contributions in 2004, when he hit .267 with 13 home runs while supplying solid defense at first base and in the outfield.
A slow start this season prompted the Mets to designate the 28-year-old for assignment on May 28, so they could bring up rookie Victor Diaz from the Tides. Valent had just eight hits and one RBI in 43 at-bats prior to the roster move.

Randolph said while he wasn't shocked, he was a little surprised that no one claimed Valent off waivers.

"Sometimes, other teams already have guys who do the job for them, and it really depends on what's needed out there," Randolph said.

I hope we see Valent before the season is done

This is all because they made a Valent pin.

It's funny how psychology works with bench players sometimes. Howe brings Valent in, shows him some confidence, Valent thrives. Randolph brings in Anderson and Woodward, shows them confidence at Valent's expense, they thrive and Valent doesn't. Hopefully Valent will get his swing back in AAA.

I'm very happy about that, Valent'll still be useful this year.

One thing though, if he's gone through waivers on a DFA once do we have to grant him his unconditional release if we ever move him from 25 man down to Norfolk again?

I'd think it'd be the same process.
