I rode my bike home in a thunderstorm. In other news, I picked up by diploma today. I goofed and planned my trip to New York last month at the same time as my graduation ceremony, so I missed that (no biggie). Now I have proof that I'm a Master - aside from the yellow glow all over my body of course.

I always thought that kinda glow came from eatin' too near nuclear facilities. This is hearsay, though, as all the power plants near me burn fossil fuels, so I ain't never seen nobody what actually glowed.

Tonight is the end of the year party at my son's elementary school. We have owned our house 10 years, and for all of that time I have had at least one child at that school continuously. But the school is currently K-3, and this is my youngest child's final year there. I'm feeling very sentimental - I'm really going to miss that place.

If I recall correctly, Bart & Lisa visit the studio that makes "Itchy and Scratchy" cartoons and learn that all the writers for "Itchy and Scratchy" are actually Harvard grads. The writers have an abusive boss who calls them "maggots" and makes fun of Harvard. One of the writers responds to the boss: "You sir have the boorish affectations of a Yalie!" Anyhow, ever since I've affectionately reffered to Harvardians as "maggots."

This is apropos of another thread, but I thought it fit better here. I had a friend, not much of a cook, for reasons which will soone be obvious. He invited me over for one of his first cooking sessions and he cooked some chicken dish with garlic in it. It was the most overly garlic thing I had ever had in my life, and that's saying a lot. There were chunks of garlic EVERYWHERE. . .so I inquired as to why he put so much garlic in it. "It called for two cloves" "There are two cloves of garlic in every bite!" "No way, man, I bought two cloves from the supermarket and those things are pretty big" "Uh, you buy heads of garlic from the grocery store, you schmuck. There are multiple cloves in a head" "Oh. . . My bad" I am not sure which is worse, that or when he asked me how to cook pasta.

a) The teenager in question is my daugher, who is finishing up her sophomore year of high school. Who can be very level headed when she wants to be. And she has spent enough time in the City in her life (including living there her first five and a half years) so that she has some sense of the place. b) Thankfully, the friends are a very good group of kids. I am very thankful for that, believe me. I don't know every one of these kids, but I know most of them for years, and I know them pretty well - they are good kids from good families, with older siblings who have turned out right so far. c) I told her that if I get permission, this woud have to be done during the day. d) The city? The only capitalized one is New York, of course. e)The destination - to see the new Batman flick on an Imax screen. This actually adds to the comfort level - the Imax theater is in our old neighborhood, which we visit frequently, and we have very close friends who live across the street from the theater. So if she got into trouble, she'd have a very safe place to go. f) She has a cell phone, and my number is programmed into it. At least one of the other kids in this traveling party has a cell phone also. g) The train would be NJ Transit to Penn, and then the 1/9 uptown (or a cab) What I told my daughter was that I wasn't saying yes just yet, and that I'd have to talk to the other parents first. If she was a total suburbanite I'd be more fearful, but it's not like she's never been on the subway before.

I hope this works out for your daughter, visiting the City is a good experience. I used to go in on the train when I was a teen, albeit I always went with my sister who is 3 1/2 years older. I went to school with suburban kids who'd NEVER been to the City and furthermore didn't want to. They don't know what they were missing.

When I moved to Connecticut, I discovered that my neighbor's kids, aged (at that time) 10,11, 13 and 15 had never been to NY City. (Individually or as a family) I couldn't believe that they didn't realize what they had been missing. The parents were from a small town in Pennsylvania and were apparently urban-phobic. Kase and any other former Boy Scouts will get a laugh out of this. Last night the Cub Scouts had a picnic/bonfire/sleepover (the sleepover part was optional. D-Dad and our Cub Scout stayed the night. I, who got debilitating poison ivy just from attending a Camporee for two hours last October, passed on that, thankyouverymuch. But I digress....). There was a Boy Scout troop in charge of the bonfire part of the evening. And they did a very nice job of buiding a fire in half an oil drum. Just one problem - instead of placing the drum on bricks, they placed it on a couple of logs. Let's just say that the Boy Scouts had to take some breaks from their skits, etc. to douse the fire underneath the fire with water. Luckily, no Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts were hurt in the process, and everyone had a good time. Still, this will be something we'll laugh about for a while - it was quite a sight.

Hottie - you'll enjoy this. When I was in Charleston last month, on sightseeing trips I heard more than once how the wealthy families would leave their plantations during the summer months and go to their summer estates in North Carolina to get away from the heat and humidity down there.

People south of the M-D line have reason to complain about the heat (although on the other hand it's their own damn fault for chosing to live in that god-forsaken tropical swamp). The past few "hot" days in Boston were typical March days when I lived in VA. A rainstorm this morning cooled things off and it is beautiful out now. Bostonians will still bitch.

Update on the trip to the City to see the new Batman film at the Imax. Last night, my daughter asks her dad if he would like to accompany the group to the show, because her friends think that he's cool and would appreciate the film. D-Dad - "One of the parents said someone couldn't go to the City without a chaperone, huh?" Daughter - "Apparently." Well, it is a good group of kids, and D-Dad will try to work out his schedule to go in with the group one day. And at least we can say that we're the parents who were willing to trust this group of kids to go to the City by themselves for the afternoon.

I just came back from baking brownies with my son's third grade class. Baking wasn't meant to be a group activity, where everyone gets to break eggs and mix things..... Still, despite the mess, it was a lot of fun. And since the teacher is a man, who hasn't had that much experience in the kitchen, my help was really appreciated <g>

I haven't tried that yet. But Diet Cherry Pepsi (or whatever its name is) is pretty good. Diet Vanilla Dr. Pepper is just like Dr. Pepper, but only more artificial. I don't see that one catching on.

I got a hit tonight! OK, it's way less impressive than it sounds. This was my son's final Little League practice of the season, and they set up a kids vs. parents game. And it was the kind of game where everyone was getting second and third chances, the coach was pitching for the kids' team, and it was all for a laugh. But I've always had a lot of trouble playing any kind of game involving hand-eye coordination. So it took a lot for me just to get up there in the first place. The fact that I was able to actually make contact with the ball and run to first was something for me - I think it was the first time in my life that I did that <g>

I am in a truly meloncholy mood. My 8-year-old just had his third grade class graduation. As the elementary school is K-3, this is his last year in the school. Ever since we moved out here 10 years ago, I have had at least one child continuously at this school (two kids for a couple of years), and it has really been a big part of our lives. To top it off, the little guy is moving to an upper elementary school, which is definitely the weak link in the district. The best thing one can say about the place is that he's only stuck there two years and then can move up to middle school. There are still two more days of school, and I'm in the building all the time, so I've been putting off my goodbyes. But it's really hitting me hard - I'm not a cryer, but I'm on the verge of tears this afternoon. I'm really going to miss that place.

I'm sure that most people heard the news that a 4-year-old child died after riding the Mission Space ride at Walt Disney World. At this point the cause of death is still undetermined, but it's certainly a tragedy. Today's AOL main page headline is "How Safe is Disney? - Ride Death Remains a Mystery." A fair enough headline. However, the accompanying photo is of Mickey Mouse and a small child riding the Dumbo ride. It's not that I have any particular sympathy for Disney World (I've often said that if Hitler and Mussolini had been benevolently inclined, they would have been running Disney World - more or less the way that it's already being run). But I think that's an unfair and prejudicial image to go along with the story - the Dumbo ride is the gentlest childrens' ride that you can imagine, while Mission Space is supposed to be quite intense. But someone simply glancing at the headline and the story might think that the Dumbo ride caused the child's death. Anyway, that's my rant du jour.

Our kids finished with final exams on May 24th. They return to school on Thursday, August 11th. I really hate their school calender. It seems that virtually every other school system, with the exception of Florida, is on a later summer vaction. I grew up getting out of school duering the first week of June and resuming after Labor Day. It just seems more natural to me.

D-Dad woke up this morning to find that the minivan had a flat tire. So he came home from work early in order to take care of it. Mini Knight (thanks marathon - I love the nickname. Although nobody has ever said as much, I'm sure most of my family was pretty underwhelmed by our $7,000 best-hotel-in-downtown-Rochester wedding when my aunt and uncle spent probably ten times that much on my cousin's wedding seven years earlier, complete with reception at Terrace on the Park and limousines for pretty much the entire extended family.

You can make the same comparisons with Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. We kept our daughter's reception on a budget, and we're doing the same with our son's upcoming Bar Mitzvah. It's not that we're not proud of the kids or anything. It's just that we find it incomprehensible to spend five figures on a 4-hour party.

The Bar/Bat Mitzvahs have gotten insane! Many years ago I had mine in the catering hall at the local firehouse. Good food and a DJ but nothing fancy. Now I got to my relatives Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and they're as elaborate as weddings! Speaking of weddings I'm getting married in September and we're trying to keep it as small and low-key as possible. Definitely no grand Long Island wedding nere... but maybe that's because I'm getting married on the Jersey shore. Which can be pricey too but we found an inn with a restaurant in it which fit our budget and needs. But in spite of my best efforts to keep the costs down it's still scary how much everything adds up and we're not doing anything crazy in the least.

Mini Knight is a summer birthday, so we need a different locale for him (the place where we had our daughter's reception no longer exists, so that's not an option).

My granddaughter is almost three, and uses plates (plastic, of course) and silverware (metal with plastic handles) quite well. My grandson is under one year old and fingers are sufficient. It's a Mexican casserole. A little time consuming and a bit caloric, but a nice meal. It has a base of crushed tortilla chips, then a layer of chicken, then a layer that includes canned tomatilloes (something that I cannot find locally, but lubitul gets for me on occasion. I guess that Connecticut is a more ethnically diverse market than Central NJ. Who knew?), canned green chiles, onions and garlic. It's topped with sour cream, marble jack, and more crushed tortilla chips. It's also a good casserole for a Monday, because it yields leftovers, and we're going to have a few catch as catch can meals around here this week.

I have a casserole cookbook, and there are four or five staple recipes in there. It's helpful to have some recipes that I can prepare in the morning, when things are calm, so that when things are crazy in the afternoon I can just throw them in the oven. Tuna casserole isn't one of the choices - I love tuna, but D-Dad hates it.

I hadda get an electrician to do my dryer too. Turns out that dryers used to have certain special plugs -- they still need special plugs but different special plugs so anytime you are buying a replacement dryer for any dryer over a few years old you've got to get an electrician.

What's the first thing you look for when doing a cryptoquote? When I see DKSDHJ'ZZ I know that Z = L. If it's DKSHDHJ'GY I know that GR is probably either RE or NT. If I see XYZHZ and XYZ I think it's likely that we have THERE and THE.

xy'z is IT'S I will fill in every three letter word to see whether THE works in the quote. And xyzx is THAT most of the time (expecially if xyq is there so THAT and THE are in the quote). I will fill in single letters with A and I If a single letter is a or i, then it's a gift (unless there's an errant O in the quote). xyqvq is THERE. Again, checking for THEs and THATs that fit. With an apostrophe, I'll check to see whether it's for an S or an N'T. (BTW, I solved the puzzle that was giving me fits earlier <g>).

It's not as bad as it sounds. Check out [url=http://www.geocities.com/cryptogramcorner/]this site[/url] if you want to give it a shot. It works better in Internet Explorer than Netscape, since in IE you can just plug the letters directly into the puzzle, and try other options if your first try doesn't pan out.

I had another Close Encounter of the Bambi Kind today. This time, though, a good deed went rewarded. My development is off of a pretty major 4-lane county road (the major east-west route in this township). My friend lives on the county road, and she's away on vacation. She's expecting a package, and she asked me to keep an eye out for it in case it's delivered while she's away. OK, no problem. And, very luckily, I was driving home this afternoon, and there was absolutely no traffic behind me, so I slowed down substantially to take a look at her house. No package, and I turn my head and prepare to accelerate forward, at which time I see a deer about two houses down from my friend's house. The thing darted right in front of me and across the road! If I hadn't slowed down at my friend's house, I probably would have hit the thing (or it would have hit me). Whew!

Thanks. We literally play on a Little League field with fences about 150 feet away (in left), but getting deeper as you move from left to right. Two shots over the fence in left is an out, which is easy to do even accidentally. It's a joke. Anyhow, the dimensions of this particular field 1) force you to hit to RF; and 2) discourages only getting a single, because with a runner on first, a hit to the outfield often means an easy force at second anyway. Occasionally, an outfielder can even attempt to force you at first on a single thru the middle, which is what happened last night. I was offended that the guy would even attempt to get out a speed demon like myself, so as the throw came in, late, I defiantly turned on the jets and rounded toward second just to shove it up their asses and hopefully force a panic error. Only everybody did their jobs, I pulled something rounding the base, and was out by 15 feet. (as a happy postscript, I stayed in the game and delivered a 2-out game-tying hit in top of the 7th inning when our team rallied for 6 runs. The game went as an 8-inning tie and assured us 1st seed in the playoffs).

It was a Camp Day, where they bused in about a bajillion seven year olds. Last week, we happened to catch CNN when the story of the Toronto plane crash was breaking. I limited the coverage, because I didn't want the kids to be watching the fiery images of what we were sure was a catastrophe with a huge toll in human life. We were shocked and amazed to hear that all of the passengers survived. I kept telling them that this was a true miracle. Joyous and amazing.

A Commercial Airliner crashed on landing, started to burn, and passengers and crew got out before the planne burst into flames. IIRC it was a semi-belly landing that caused the plane to break up. Hydraulics may have prevented the landing gear from fully extending. The pilot had dumped most of his fuel, but the plane began to break up on landing(skidding?) and burst into flames after the plane skidded to a stop. This morning, I was awakened by a loud tapping noise. I turned off all the fans, noise machines, etc, in the bedroom and still could hear it. It was coming from outside. Finally I spotted a woodpecker working away on the pool shed. On our cruise, D-Dad bought some Duty Free Bermudian rum from the store on the ship, as opposed to buying it from the store downtown. When we got home, we discovered that instead of giving us 4 bottles of dark rum and 4 bottles of golden rum, they just gave us 8 bottles of the dark rum. Not the end of the world - it's good stuff, and the price was great. But nonetheless, it wasn't what he ordered. So he contacted the cruise line, and they're going to credit us for the 4 bottles of golden rum that we didn't get. Obviously, we get to keep the dark stuff we were given by mistake. All in all, we're pretty pleased with the transaction. If we wind up spending a little more to get the golden rum locally, at least we won't be grumbling over the mistake.

I ate lunch with my son (the Billy Wagner fan) today. All the little first-graders thought it was nifty that his mom came to eat lunch with him. I was reminded just how awful school cafeteria food is. Today it was pizza, California-style vegetables, fruit (your choice, pear chunks in syrup or fresh apple slices) and a little bag of cinnamon graham bears. I don't think I've ever had worse pizza. Tomorrow, I go eat lunch with my daughter the Metfan and her third-grade class. Hopefully the food will be better.

I used to have a great one page tipping guide somewhere but I can't find it. The jist of the article was that tipping is greatly misunderstood by both the people with their hands out and the tippers and they provided a list of do's and don'ts. Giving two guys $20 each for ripping out a room or two of carpet and installing new carpet sounds reasonable to me. If it's their business and they're not just employees then no tip is the proper way to go. .

Everyday I pass this guy in Harvard Square who has a sign that reads "You must convert to born-again Christianity or you will burn in hell!!!" and wears a t-shirt that says "Dandy the Divine" (which sounds to me more like the name of a drag queen, but I digress). This is all fine and good, but Dandy the Divine never talks to anyone and worse listens to his headphones. What kind of half-assed evangelical is that? I actually feel gyped that he's not preaching fire and brimstone and telling me what my own personal journey to hell will be like.

My daughter turns 16 tomorrow. She already took driver's ed in school last year, so I figured that all I'd have to do would be to take her to DMV tomorrow for her permit. No, I was wrong. In this state, for a 16-year-old to get a learner's permit, you have to go through a driving school. Once you take care of the paperwork and arrange for six hours of (not inexpensive) driving lessons, THEN your kid gets the permit! If you don't want to deal with a driving school, the kid doesn't get to have a permit until age 17. Whose palms were greased to get this deal passed? What a ripoff! I'm sure that I'd arrange for her to have professional lessons regardless, but I'm offended by the concept that parents in this state can't just get a permit for a 16-year-old and teach the kid to drive if that's what they want.

This was weird. I go to the gym this morning. Afterwards, I'm heading to my car. I unlock it via the remote, and hear the car unlock, but I'm saying hi to someone I know at the time so I'm not looking. Then I walk up and open the door. Except I see junk in the front seat that's not mine, and realize that it's not my car! It's a blue Honda, that's parked next to my blue Subaru. OK, no blood, no foul. I go to my already unlocked car and drive away. While leaving, I hear the blue Honda's alarm go off. I guess it has a mechanism where the alarm goes off if you don't turn over the ignition right away. Oops..... The only saving grace is that security in this parking lot is obsessive (it's at D-Dad's place of employment. They once sent him a report because I scratched my car on a light pole. When he got home, I dared him to find the scratch, and he couldn't), so I'm sure they called the car's owner and got him/her to shut the alarm. It was an odd way to start the day.

There's a hurricane headed this way. And I'm not evacuating because I don't have enough money or anywhere to go. I should be okay because I'm pretty far from the coast, but I might lose power and, if the guys who run my utility district are as stupid as the city of Houston, I'll lose water. They said on the radio this is the third worst storm on record. I hope that being this far inland is sufficient. They closed the schools for the next few days and panic has set in amongst the general populace. There are lines for gas and for water (from the purified water machines, the bottled water is long gone).

Crappy things about this day - Having to get up extra early because D-Dad had to be in North Jersey this morning. D-Dad not waking up our older son until 15 minutes before he had to leave for the school bus. My latte machine breaking. Having a dishwasher on the verge of breaking. My daughter missing her bus from the performing arts high school (at the southern tip of our township) and needing to be at her home high school for school play rehearsal (in the township north of us), leaving me driving like a maniac and making it home in time for my 12-year-old's school bus with something like 15 seconds to spare. Same daughter missing her after school bus. I could use a nap. And a drink.

My contract w/ Cingular expired recently (I recall this because I joined them on the same day Reyes hurt his leg sliding in 03). I was pissed at Cingular because: 1) They purchased AT&T, whom I'd already quit in disgust when they refused to replace a phone so shitty I couldn;t even hear it 2) Too damn expensive. I need a cellphone, but I don't need one $50 bucks a month, and rarely put more than 60 minutes a month on it. I have like a million rollover minutes tthat vanished yesterday and won;t miss them. I was paying for something I never used, and they don't offer any cheap-ass alternatives. Like I said in 2 years I predict a move over to T-mobile and some other service I haven;t had the chance to be dissatisfied with yet.

Do you want to hear something sad? Last night was back to school night at my daughter's performing arts high school. There are 11 girls in her vocal program this year. Do you want to know how many people showed up for the event? Four parents, representing three girls. I find that incredible - you have a group of talented kids who auditioned into this program and who are working their butts off honing their craft, and only three of them had parents who gave a crap? I can't comprehend it.

We'er taking my second son, who's legally bind and hard of hearing, to tour the [url=http://www.dars.state.tx.us/dbs/ccrc/index.shtml]Criss Cole Rehab Center[/url] a school for blind folks in Austin tomorrow. This school teaches daily living skills. Things like cooking, cleaning, how to manage finances, how to use a cane and all sorts of stuff you need to know to get on in the world as an independent blind person. The program lasts six to nine months and he'd start in January if the tour goes well.

It sounds even better now that I've been there. They teach folks how to use power tools. Seriously. I saw a chest, two coffetables and some bookshelves made by "consumers" there. They also require that anyone with any amount of sight do everything with a blindfold on. This teaches them to rely on their other senses (so they don't have to come back if their vision deteriorates). They have them go shopping and all kinds of basic normal things that you wouldn't think about someone needing to learn. They even have computers and internet so we'll be able to keep in touch (the phone doen't work well for him because of his hearing). He's fired up about it.

We really needed the rain as we have been experiencing a drought and some communities had recently begun mandatory water restrictions. Our city had not resorted to that yet, but it wouldn't have been much longer before they likely would have. I actually hope it rains some more this weekend.

I'm pleased with my current player designation as Nolan Ryan. I really loved to watch him pitch. When he was on and throwing his curveball for strikes, the hitters had virtually no chance. It was funny watching major league batters looking so totally helpless. His "stuff" was absolutely electrifying.

The only time I had been to Sarnoff previously was for t-ball games on their campus, but this was our first visit inside the premises. It was a fascinating experience.

From the Trenton Times - A fright out of sight Sunday, October 30, 2005 By CHRIS STURGIS WEST WINDSOR - The Martians and their death machines appeared in Grovers Mill yesterday, just as they did on Oct. 30, 1938. But you had to use your imagination to see them. That was the magic of radio, as audience members were treated to a performance of the classic radio play by the Hunterdon Radio Theatre in the Sarnoff Corp. Auditorium. The original "War of the Worlds" broadcast by Orson Welles and his Mercury Theatre on the Air was performed without an audience. The Hunterdon performers, however, donned 1930s-style garb and revealed some of the sound effects tricks of their trade to anyone who kept their eyes open. The actual sound of the show came from the stage to the audience via a weak radio transmitter and about 15 antique radios provided by members of the New Jersey Antique Radio Club. The sets ranged from table models to wooden console models with brand names like Silvertone, Atwater Kent, Philco and RCA. One art deco Spartan radio had a wood-grain appearance thanks to a process of adding a photograph of wood grain to a piece of metal. Phil Vourtsis, president of the antique radio club, emphasized that the transmitter - the antenna stood only about 15 feet tall and was in the same room as the radios - would only send the broadcast to sets inside the building. "We didn't want to scare everyone again," he said, referring to the fact that some people tuned into the 1938 broadcast late and mistook the radio fiction for fact. On stage, the ensemble of about 20 actors and technicians playing computerized sound effects followed the direction of Elaine Powers, who stood back to the audience, working from the script. "It's like conducting a symphony, telling everyone where to come in, where to cut out and how loud they should be," she said. Her challenge as a director was to make sure the emotions were pouring from the voices, because a typical radio audience wouldn't be able to see the actors. Bob Hunt, who played "Announcer Three" in the radio play and does the morning show for WKMB in Plainsboro in real life, said he has always loved radio drama. "It's theater of the mind," he said. "It forces you to fill in all the details in your mind. Television spells it all out for you." The performance was preserved on an acetate disk, resembling a phonograph record, by the antique radio enthusiasts using an antique recorder. The playback had the tinny sound of historic broadcasts. "It didn't sound tinny to ears of 60 years ago," Hunt said. The radio club's technical coordinator, Al Klase, said the reason the fictional broadcast was taken as fact was that the most popular radio show of that time slot, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, was having a weak show featuring a dreadful singer. Listeners changed in droves and tuned into the "War of the Worlds" broadcast after it had begun, leading them to believe they were tuning in to a genuine news broadcast. Saturday's re-enactment ended with James King playing Orson Welles. He told the audience the alien attack was just a drama, and a bit of a Halloween prank by radio, "the invader of your living room." It's raining here and, although my children are out ringing doorbells, I have yet to have anyone come to my house. I'm supposed to be on a diet. Resisting that huge bowl of candy is tough. Almost as tough as watching Zeke Astacio come in to pitch in Game 3.

I decided a long time ago that when the budget had some wiggle room, I wanted to be able to give out full-sized Halloween candy. Last year we picked up a candy assortment from BJ's Warehouse. This year we stuck with full-sized M&M's bags. The neighborhood kids are really appreciative.

I was having an argument with AOL - the subject matter was minor, but their lack of ability to fix a simple thing and their penchant for leaving me on hold and routing me to people who still couldn't help me pissed me off enough that I threatened to cancel the service. Not only did they wind up fixing my problem, but they lowered my monthly rate significantly. Channeling CF has its benefits!

When I was in college I went to lunch with my friend Heather and we got split up in the food court and when I found her in the dining area she was sitting with our friend Hoon. "Hi Hoon," I said although it wasn't Hoon. Heather had thought he was Hoon too, but had already learned he was a graduate student who looked remarkably like Hoon. He gracefully sat and ate lunch with us and was a pretty nice guy. I never saw him again and still wonder if it was really Hoon pulling our legs as well as having that guilty feeling that I'm one of those people who think "all Asians look alike."
