A Propos of Nothing
ScarletKnight41 Jun 05 2005 02:19 PM |
I've said this before, and I'll say it again - there is nothing in this universe as delicious as strawberries that you have just picked off the vine. Yum!
|
Willets Point Jun 05 2005 07:27 PM |
Previous topic and next topic in this forum mean the exact opposite of what they mean in Ezboard. It's like a sink with hot water on the right and cold on the left, I'll never get used to it.
|
seawolf17 Jun 05 2005 07:31 PM |
What, exactly, is a "propos" of nothing?
|
cooby Jun 05 2005 10:36 PM |
I just realized, that little (what is that thing, a bell?) turns tan when there is a new post on a forum
|
cooby Jun 05 2005 10:37 PM |
Only, how do you make it turn white again after you've read it?
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 05 2005 10:41 PM |
Just refresh the page and it will turn white automatically if there are no new posts.
|
cooby Jun 05 2005 11:16 PM |

A piece of string walks into a bar. The bartender says, "Sorry, pal, we don't serve string." So the string walks outside, ties himself up and tussles his ends. He walks back in, and the bartender says, "Hey, pal, I told you, we don't serve string." The string, irritated, replies, "No, I'm a frayed knot."

I stepped out our back door today and walked right into an effing spiderweb. I think MLB put it there to promote the future filming of Spiderman 3. And now I'm going to be thinking I have tiny spiders in my hair (well, on my head) all day.

No, Harvard students / alums are maggots. It's a Simpson's reference, SKIP might remember the episode.
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 09 2005 10:38 PM |
Damn - I can't recall it
|
Willets Point Jun 09 2005 10:42 PM |
If I recall correctly, Bart & Lisa visit the studio that makes "Itchy and Scratchy" cartoons and learn that all the writers for "Itchy and Scratchy" are actually Harvard grads. The writers have an abusive boss who calls them "maggots" and makes fun of Harvard. One of the writers responds to the boss: "You sir have the boorish affectations of a Yalie!"
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 09 2005 10:44 PM |
I do remember the episode - back when The Simpsons was still funny. But I didn't remember that reference.
|
holychicken Jun 10 2005 09:55 AM |
A willets, I remember that episode. . . .but I was refering to Harvard expanding and, as a result, there was an increase of rats in Allston. I guess my reference wasn't as clever as I thought it was.
|
holychicken Jun 10 2005 11:25 AM |
This is apropos of another thread, but I thought it fit better here.

ScarletKnight41 Jun 10 2005 03:36 PM |
OK - this is a serious question. At what age is a teenager old enough to take a train into the City with her friends for the day?
|
Willets Point Jun 10 2005 03:40 PM |
Depends on the maturity of the teenager, but I'd say at least a high school freshman.
|
Edgy DC Jun 10 2005 03:42 PM |
Depends on:
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 10 2005 03:56 PM |
a) The teenager in question is my daugher, who is finishing up her sophomore year of high school. Who can be very level headed when she wants to be. And she has spent enough time in the City in her life (including living there her first five and a half years) so that she has some sense of the place.
|
Willets Point Jun 10 2005 04:06 PM |
I hope this works out for your daughter, visiting the City is a good experience. I used to go in on the train when I was a teen, albeit I always went with my sister who is 3 1/2 years older.
|

seawolf17 Jun 10 2005 04:13 PM |
Honestly, people... New York City is not, by any means, "all that." (I know, I know... sacrilege.)

After hearing the many myths and legends of their great extravagance, I attended my first Long Island Wedding this weekend.
|
seawolf17 Jun 27 2005 09:23 AM |
Welcome to the club, WIllets. Although nobody has ever said as much, I'm sure most of my family was pretty underwhelmed by our $7,000 best-hotel-in-downtown-Rochester wedding when my aunt and uncle spent probably ten times that much on my cousin's wedding seven years earlier, complete with reception at Terrace on the Park and limousines for pretty much the entire extended family.
|
Willets Point Jun 27 2005 09:46 AM |
I think my favorite part was when the wedding party entered to Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll."

You can make the same comparisons with Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. We kept our daughter's reception on a budget, and we're doing the same with our son's upcoming Bar Mitzvah.
|
silverdsl Jun 27 2005 10:31 AM |
The Bar/Bat Mitzvahs have gotten insane! Many years ago I had mine in the catering hall at the local firehouse. Good food and a DJ but nothing fancy. Now I got to my relatives Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and they're as elaborate as weddings!

What's a nice casserole?
|
ScarletKnight41 Jun 27 2005 04:16 PM |
It's a Mexican casserole. A little time consuming and a bit caloric, but a nice meal. It has a base of crushed tortilla chips, then a layer of chicken, then a layer that includes canned tomatilloes (something that I cannot find locally, but lubitul gets for me on occasion. I guess that Connecticut is a more ethnically diverse market than Central NJ. Who knew?), canned green chiles, onions and garlic. It's topped with sour cream, marble jack, and more crushed tortilla chips.

When I introduced them to Rob, our Associate Dean of Admissions, we established that not only was this alum from our hometown (our Dean and I are both Commackians, although 13 years apart), but this guy's sister went to the prom with Rob's brother way back in the day. Edgy DC Aug 07 2005 07:29 AM |
|
MFS62 Aug 07 2005 09:14 AM |
The Toronto "miracle" was slightly different from what happened at the Dubuque Airport about 15- 20 years ago. A Commercial Airliner crashed on landing, started to burn, and passengers and crew got out before the planne burst into flames. But once some of them realized they were in Iowa, they jumped back into the flames.
|
metsmarathon Aug 07 2005 12:20 PM |
that the one where the plane started rolling, and basically made it to the airport on, like, one engine, and faulty hydraulics?
|
MFS62 Aug 07 2005 12:49 PM |
IIRC it was a semi-belly landing that caused the plane to break up. Hydraulics may have prevented the landing gear from fully extending. The pilot had dumped most of his fuel, but the plane began to break up on landing(skidding?) and burst into flames after the plane skidded to a stop.

On our cruise, D-Dad bought some Duty Free Bermudian rum from the store on the ship, as opposed to buying it from the store downtown. When we got home, we discovered that instead of giving us 4 bottles of dark rum and 4 bottles of golden rum, they just gave us 8 bottles of the dark rum. Not the end of the world - it's good stuff, and the price was great. But nonetheless, it wasn't what he ordered.

I forgot to mention it, but Wednesday I got a Jeff Bagwell figurine in the mail. What's cool about this is that a friend bought it for me. I'm collecting the set and last weekend a different friend took me to the ballgame so I could get the Lance Berkman figurine. Now I have them all--Jimmy Wynn, Cheo Cruz, Nolan Ryan, Jeff Bagwell and Lance Berkman.

Do you want to hear something sad? Last night was back to school night at my daughter's performing arts high school. There are 11 girls in her vocal program this year. Do you want to know how many people showed up for the event? Four parents, representing three girls. I find that incredible - you have a group of talented kids who auditioned into this program and who are working their butts off honing their craft, and only three of them had parents who gave a crap? I can't comprehend it.

It sounds even better now that I've been there. They teach folks how to use power tools. Seriously. I saw a chest, two coffetables and some bookshelves made by "consumers" there. They also require that anyone with any amount of sight do everything with a blindfold on. This teaches them to rely on their other senses (so they don't have to come back if their vision deteriorates). They have them go shopping and all kinds of basic normal things that you wouldn't think about someone needing to learn.

ScarletKnight41 Jan 29 2006 02:50 PM |
The best thing out of his mouth, ever, was when we were watching the first televised spring training game of 2002. At that point, most of us were very excited about seeing the newly acquired Mo Vaughn in action. In the early innings, Mo flubbed a throw from first to second, resulting in two runners for the opposing team being safe (as opposed to getting the lead runner at second or getting a double play). At that point, I hear my cherubic 5-year-old shout out, "Mo Vaughn - What the Hell is Wrong With You?"

She might be one hell of a lawyer, but Ms. Abdala appears to be somewhat lacking in maturity and social skills.

A half dozen snipers are on the roof of the hotel across the street and the building opposite, preparing the way for the arrival of a VIP.

Stay away from your window. They may be after YOU.

I often hear gunshots around my house, but I think they are shooting at crows or something. Makes it tough to take a walk in the woods, though.

The word on the street is that the Prez is appearing there. It's three blocks from the White House. All this logistics to get the guy three blocks.

It is so funny when you get a phone call from someone who has a real radio voice. It makes routine phone calls much more interesting.

Kasey Kasem calling again?

My first job, I worked in the office at a warehouse that was owned by the brother of the owner of the local radio station (Farmer Ted would know who I'm talking about). He did a lot of the ads and sports play by play so his voice was very familiar to everyone.

Are they good-guy snipers or bad-guy snipers? I heard that Bush has outsourced the Secret Service to some company from Dubai. I wonder if they're trying to protect the President or hurt him.

MFS62 Feb 24 2006 02:03 PM |
Edgy, we'd suggest stepping away from the window.

My friend in Florida is planning on coming up to New York for the Westminster Kennel Club dog show next year! I'm looking forward to seeing her again, and I'm looking forward to going to the show again - I haven't been to Westminster since we moved to NJ!

This is good news. I was just on the phone with my other friend who has lung cancer (what's with the lung cancer epidemic? Sheesh!), and she told me that her tumor has shrunk significantly under the chemo she's undergoing :)

Johnny Dickshot Mar 01 2006 10:43 AM |
Yeah, childhood friend I haven't seen or spoke to in 20-some years -- he's a character in a lot of my memories of being a young Met fan. I know from online stalking he's become a powerhouse financial player in Hong Kong, but can't find an email addy.

The middle knuckle on the ring finger of my right hand has been bugging the hell out of me for a few weeks now. I'm finally going to see a specialist about it Monday.
