Reply I met SP last night at the Tides game

I met Mets GM Steve Phillips at the Tides game today. He was there with his son.

Here's what was said:

GG: Are you Steve Phillips?

SP: Yes, I am.

GG: May I have your autograph? (Why not?)

SP: Sure.

GG: Great job on the recent trades.

SP: Thanks.

GG: Do you think any of these guys is going to contribute to the Mets next season?

SP: Yes. I think so. We'll see how things play out.

GG: One more thing... Pete Walker has been pitching really well this season and I think he deserves a look in a September callup.

SP: I appreciate that and I think Pete would too.

GG: Thanks.

He seemed very professional about everything and I didn't want to cut short our little conversation with a waiver question or to ask whether any deal were imminent. Not much to be said, but he seemed like a decent guy.

You should have told him not to low ball Gaimbi this off season like he did Olerud, Hampton and every other free agent.

Like I said, I didn't want to get booted or anything. A fan asking a few questions isn't a huge deal. He was sitting in a regular seat, not the press box, right behind home plate. I only asked him a few things that he COULD comment on. I know it's not like him to comment on other team's players or potential trades, so I didn't bother.

When I saw him two weeks ago and screamed "Daryl Ward!!!" he looked less than amused. I just laughed. How cool is that guy's job? I don't care what he has to put up with it still beats mine.

GG,good interview...thanks for the info....I would like to see an ambler interview with SP...

"So...You are telling me that I gotta make the bat...hit the ball???" Jay Payton

"We are a veteran ball club...we'll be fine" Steve Phillips

"You know, I have seen alot of things in my time, and I have been alot of places, but one thing is for sure...this team sucks!" A wise old drunken Met fan that sits next to me.

It wasn't an interview as much as it was a hi, keep up the good work, and callup some of these Tides in September conversation. He was with his son! I didn't want to be demanding (I could've been thrown out or something...).

Reply I spoke with Steve Phillips

I spoke to SP a couple of years ago during spring training during the Brad Radke rumors and I came out and openly asked him if Radke was coming to New York and he joked by saying they already aquired him...

SP has always been given an autograph or talked with the fans..

I'm sure it's not the first or last time that a fan has talked with SP about a trade rumor

I doubt that SP would have told gold glove any info about waiver deal. So good job gold glove and keep us updated about the farm system

Ambler...did you take any photo's this past spring traning??

He kept a pretty low profile. I only saw Tides staff people talking too him once in a while. None of the other fans seemed to notice he was there or recognize him.

I would like to see an ambler interview with SP...

Ambler: Hey Steve. Can I have your autograph?

SP: Sure.

AM: Thanks. While you’re at it, can you show me the plan?

SP: The plan?

AM: Y’know, the plan. How you’re going to execute the massive rebuilding this team needs.

SP: I’m not sure we need a massive rebuilding, but…

AM:Yes you do.

SP: Do not.

AM: Do too.

SP: Oh yeah?

AM: Yeah. Like Piazza. When are you going to trade him?

SP: I don’t believe we will be trading Mike Piazza.

AM: See?

SP: See what?

AM: It’s not your fault, really.

SP: What isn’t my fault?

AM: You’re constrained by the cheapass owners.

SP: We all work under a budget. Don’t you?

AM: Well…

SP: We’re doing all we can to put a good team on the field. We have to keep an eye on now and on the future.

AM: Why don’t you dump Zeile?

SP: Dump? We’re not in a position to dump players, especially those we’ve made a large investment in and we’re counting on to come around. Right now the market isn’t good for Todd, and we’d need something back. This isn’t a simple matter of addition by subtraction.

AM: You traded all the wrong guys.

SP: Heh-heh. Tell that to Ed Wade.

AM: You coulda got more for Reed.

SP: Like who?

AM: I gotta go find my seat

SP: Wait. Who?

AM: I dunno. You should have thrown in LOBIN and Toad.

SP: Sure. This isn’t rotisserie, you know.

AM: What about A-rod? Wasn’t that 24 and 1 nonsense just a ruse?

SP: There was some truth to it. The bottom line was we couldn’t afford to sign a contract that big.

AM: Ordonez sucks. Play Desi every day.

SP: That’s a matter for Bobby to decide.

AM: You should force Piazza to play first.

SP: I thought you just said we should trade him?

AM: I’m not spending another dime on Mets baseball until you show me the plan.

SP: Then what are you doing here?

AM: Uhhh… Free tickets. I won them in a radio contest.

SP: And that hotdog?

AM: Found it over by the trash can.

SP: I see.

AM: Steve?

SP: Yeah?

AM: Will you show me the plan?

SP: No.

AM: Please?

SP: Sorry. You’ll have to wait. If I went around showing my plan to everyone, I could lose whatever leverage I have.

AM: Then I’m not spending another dime on Mets baseball.

SP: We’re really going to miss you.

Ca plane pour moi!

Oh. Then why didn't you title the thread, "SP was at the Tides game: My hi, keep up the good work, and callup some of these Tides in September conversation?"

Coming soon: "Gold Glove Interviews Bobby Valentine."

GG: "Hey Bobby, great job with the team this year!!!"

Stevie Lowballs Phillips lowballed Olerud? He signed the same contract in Seattle that the Mets offered him. Hampton was offered $105 million for 7 years. I wish someone would lowball me with $15 million a year. Besides, and I'm saying this for the 15th time, SP does not decide how much money to offer free agents. He works within the budget that is alotted him by Wilpon and Doubleday. I'm not suggesting he is above criticism, because no one in this organization should escape blame for this disastrous season. However, he cannot logically be criticized for things that are beyond his control. The owners dictate salary offers to marquee free agents. Not Steve Phillips.

This was one worth saving. It provides the answer to the question, "Why were we laughing so hard at the MOFO picnic about that hotdog on the ground?"
