Re: It was 50 years ago today ...

I'm supposed to be keeping track of the singles hitting No. 1 during this period and got sidelined. When we last left Billboard, Simon and Garfunkel were embarking on an epic, six-week run with "Bridge Over Troubled Waters." It would take something really special to knock it out of the top...

Re: Rule of Eight

While bagels are available here, it is impossible to find bialys. Growing up, on our way home from church we'd swing by the bagel store and get a bag of bagels and Dad would also get a couple bailys -- not sure if that's the proper plural -- because he knew I liked them. My favorite bagel story. I w...

Re: Rule of Eight

I have a bagel every morning! I love poppy seed, and the local place -- which is not up to New York standards, but is the best we got -- has a "dozen day" every Tuesday, when the price is reduced. They have a dozen poppy seed bagels for me ready to go, every other week. Occasionally, when ...

“My Baby Loves Lovin’” by White Plains (1970) “Gimme Dat Ding!” by Pipkins (1970) “United We Stand (Divided We Fall)” Brotherhood of Man (1970) “Beach Baby” by First Class (1974) They only one I don't know is "Gimme Dat Ding!" and I think I'm OK with that! Had no idea about the singer!

My Dad didn't have a ton of albums, but one he had was "Cosmo's Factory" and I know that by heart. We would set up speakers in the back yard and crank it up. That's summer to me!

Re: It was 50 years ago today ...

We won't have another single to report on until April! That's because Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Waters" locked down the No. 1 spot on the Billboard chart from Feb. 28 until April 11, a six-week run! Some interesting things about the song. -- It's written by Simon, but san...

Re: Spring Training 2020

I am very hopeful!

Visiting my parents ahead of a work conference, and see the Mets have a home game -- then on the road in nearby Jupiter and West Palm Beach. So weather permitting, I'm hoping to make that home game!

Re: It was 50 years ago today ...

Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath is 50 years old today. Everything about that album creeps me out. Everything. Especially the cover. I know that's the point. What's amazing that Paranoid was released in the same calendar year, and is a lot more accessible to me. But that first album, and the first son...

Bounding to No. 1 on the Billboard chart on Feb. 14, 1970 was: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/30/Sly-fam-thankyou-star.jpg/220px-Sly-fam-thankyou-star.jpg I was surprised to see the 45 sleeve not use the full name of the song, which is, of course, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf...

And, hey, if someone(s) want to take it upon themselves to track the singles chart from 50 years ago as the year progresses then we can throw that mix into the fire here too. I can give it a try! Billboard No. 1 on February 7, 1970: Shocking Blue – “Venus” https://www.stereogum.com/2026141/the-numb...

I'm going to assume that nothing we see in the lobby is there randomly. Is that the famous jackalope from Wall Drug? That thing shattered my Mets gnome!

I came to all this stuff after the fact. Y'know, because I'm not as old as you guys, who are very, very, VERY old. What else was there that you guys were listening to at the time? Paranoid ? Loaded ? Elton John ? Well, I was 6 at the time. Had this one in heavy rotation. https://i.pinimg.com/origin...

Re: It was 50 years ago today ...

What a great idea!

My Dad had some S&G albums, and "The Boxer" was one of the songs he would spontaneously sing a verse to. ("Come Together" was another song he'd do that to.)

yeah and the vast majority of MLB players are idiots too. Didn't a lot of pitchers get all whiny about steroids too even though they were just as roided up, if not more? Hell, plenty of pitchers get all up in arms about the shift too, even though they're dead wrong about it hurting them. Whether or...

What if Beltran made that statement in person, other than the last line, the day after the report was issued? Would we be at this point today? That's a tough call, because we don't know what was going on behind the scenes. But I do think the sooner you get out with something like that, the better o...

Good statement from Beltran. "Over my 20 years in the game, I've always taken pride in being a leader and doing things the right way, and in this situation, I failed," Beltran said in a statement given to ESPN. "As a veteran player on the team, I should've recognized the severity of t...

Mike Voccaro says Beltran should not be fired -- unless he lied to the Mets if they asked about it.
