Re: IGT 06/02 - ARI at NYM - 1:40 First Pitch

Mendoza didn't use his long man despite losing his starting pitcher after four. He pulled Dedniel Nuñez while he had three pitches working and had fanned three guys in a row. Then he sent a lefty out to save it going up against a star switch-hitter whose OPS is a crushing .270 points better against ...

Good play.

I watched the Mets in the Summer of Cerone in 1991, but somehow completely deleted him. I'm aware, of course, that he was there, but not a single concrete memory sticks.

Re: IGT 06/02 - ARI at NYM - 1:40 First Pitch

Well, the Mets ninth-inning job is currently being listed at linkedin.

Diekman sort of was set up, sending him against righties, but he didn't come in to anybody.

Ottavino for the eighth sure makes it look like the Mets are planning to throw Smith right into the ninth-inning fire.

Re: Detachable Mets (Waived, DFA’d, Released) 2024

I realize that Torrens is Venezuelan, but it feels odd to see 13 on the back of a non-infielder.

The last Mets catcher to wear it has to be ... part-time backstop Clint Hurdle?

A long foul ball aside, putting Reed Garrett back in the middle innings looks like it may be the way get him back in gear.

Now the WHO'S CLOSING mystery lingers. John Franco was here yesterday. How's his arm?

Re: IGT 06/02 - ARI at NYM - 1:40 First Pitch

And that endorsement of Dedniel Nuñez as bullpen darkhorse is suddenly looking prescient.

Or at least, it is to me. Not so much to Carlos Mendoza, who is lifting him in the middle of an inning after three consecutive strikeouts, with three different pitches working.

I, for one, welcome the Luís Torrens era to Citi Field. (If they play "Brother Louie" for him, I think I'm going to scream.) I happen to love Brother Louie. Whatever do you mean? I love it too, but it's a tragic song, and they played a chorus of it every time Luis Guillorme came up, and i...

Re: MLB to integrate Negro League Stats

Cobb played in a racially segregated league, which implicates him — and everybody up to and including heroic princes like Christy Matthewson and Lou Gehrig — in racism. Beyond that, Cobb as a savage misanthrope steeped in racial animus is a popular myth largely descended from a single source that ap...

Re: MLB to integrate Negro League Stats

Sticking with the saw that Ty Cobb was the embodiment of racism is bad enough, but calling him "the old Confederate" is more than a bit unfair, as Cobb in fact came from a long line of abolitionists.
