IGT 05/06/24 -- NYM @ STL

Post by bmfc1 » Sun May 05, 2024 9:42 pm

7:45 PM ET (6:45 CT), the Mets at the Cardinals for the 1st of 3 games... and I will be there. So will Sean Manaea for the Mets and Kyle Gibson for the Cardinals: https://www.mlb.com/gameday/mets-vs-car ... 82/preview
Will Pete get a hit? How many walks will Mets pitchers give up? How many bases will the Cardinals steal?
As of 9:30 PM on Sunday, STL is a 1.5 run favorite and the O/U is 8.5.

Those three questions make a good framework.

Even thought he wasn't really hitting or catching basestealers when he went down, Francisco Álvarez' backpick skills have been missed as an alternative way to keep runners honest.

Among other things, though, I think we got a pretty good look today at why Mendoza has been going to Nido over Narváez so much. Bringing Nido in to pinch-hit in the top of the sixth seemed more about making a defensive swap than about the righty-lefty matchup.

I've been working on my word of the day. Yesterday's was "bleak," but today I'm leaning toward "dreary."

Whoever wanted Alonso to take a blow gets his wish. Got to be the first time he's been healthy but out of the lineup in forever.

Relatedly, it's also DJ Stewart's debut at first for the Mets.

I kind of have a bitter enjoyment to see Arenado and Goldschmidt off to a bad start. The Cardinals have done really well for a while now taking on guys from the Mountain Time Zone who had reached the point in their career where they wanted to get paid. And if other teams were were shy about whether those guys could hit outside of the dry air of Arizona or the thin air of Colorady, the Cardinals weren't, and they'd jump on Matt Holliday when the Mets instead invested in Jason Bay.

You may make the right call on these guys, Cards, but it, um, doesn't last forever.

That's not a really great own, though, is it?

I'm sorry. It's DJ's debut in the major leagues at first.

Has played 21 games there in the minors.

Seeing a Mets pitcher seems to revive Goldschmidt from any funk he happens to be in at the time.

With that out, Manaea's ERA is now 2.78. He's pitching like the potential All-Star he was a few years ago with the A's.

After the Nootbaar error I was hoping for hits w/RiSP.
Had to settle for two productive outs w/RiSP instead.
But, y'know, baby steps and all that.

Don't worry, Nike will get him a newer, less sweaty version, maybe even as soon as the 2025 season (though no promises).
