Adopted - Calvin Ziegler

I'm adopting 19 year old Canadian right handed starting pitcher Calvin Ziegler.
He was drafted by the Mets in the second round of the 2021 Amateur draft.
He didn't play last year but has started off his professional this year at St. Lucie (low A).

In four games he has pitched 14 2/3 innings.
Maybe opposing hitters are intimidated by his 160 kilometers per hour fastball speed.
Maybe Poutine really is the breakfast of champions.
Whatever the reason, he has given up just five hits and struck out twenty-six batters (not a misprint) in those 14 2/3 inings.

Welcome to the family, Cal.

Last night he pitched two hitless innings in his first start since coming back from a brief stint on the IL.
That continued his streak of not giving up more than two hits in any game he has pitched.

His line for the year is now 8G, 8 GS, 31 IP, 11 H, 19 BB, 51K, 2.90 ERA, .968 WHIP.

Cal can't seem to get any help.
He was the "opener" in tonight's game.
He pitched one inning, gave up one run on one hit and struck out two.
He took the loss because the pitchers who followed him soiled the linens giving up the final 13 runs on 16 hits in a 17-2 loss.

No official word, but Calvin hasn't pitched in about two weeks.
Me must be on the IL.
Or was eaten by a gator.

The kid finally pitched tonight. (He must have been on the IL)
He pitched 2/3 of an inning, gave up one run (not earned) no hits, but walked three and struck out one.
This continues his streak of not giving up more than two hits in any game he's started - sorta.

The kid is easing back into the rotation.
He started today, and his line was: 2IP, 0 H,0 R, 1 B, 3K (he hit one batter)
His string is still intact of never giving up more than two hits in any start.

The kid started again tonight.
He pitched 2 1/3, gave up one hit (his string of two or fewer its in every start is still alive), one un-earned run, walked three and struck out two. No decision.

Metsmerized.com rates him the #22 prospect:
22. CALVIN ZIEGLER, RHP
B/T: R/R Age: 10/3/2002 (21)
Ht: 6’0″ Weight: 205 lbs
Acquired: 2021 Second Round Pick from TNXL Academy (Ocoee, FL)
ETA: 2025 Previous Rank: N/A
2023 Pitching Stats (St. Lucie): 1 G (1 GS), 1.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.000 WHIP, 0.0 BB/9, 27.0 K/9

The Mets have a really good pitching prospect in Ziegler. His 2023 season was cut short, limiting him to just one inning pitched. He has dealt with several injuries in his brief career, including biceps tendinitis, bone spurs, and a torn quad. In total, he has pitched just under 50 career pro innings.

The upside is undoubtedly there, though. In his only full season, Ziegler pitched to a 4.44 ERA in 46 2/3 innings but recorded 70 strikeouts. That equates to an impressive 13.5 K/9. On the other hand, Ziegler also walked 35 batters in that same span, equating to a poor 6.8 BB/9.

Ziegler throws three pitches: a fastball, a curveball, and a splitter. Ziegler’s fastball and curveball are considered above average, grading out to a 60 on the 20-80 scale. His fastball tends to sit in the 92-94 mph range, which works well for him despite his below-average size on the mound. His curveball sits in the low 80s and tends to generate a lot of swings and misses. The splitter is still considered a work in progress, and staying healthy will have a big impact on further developing his pitches.

A lot will be riding on the 2024 season for Ziegler. He needs to prove that he is healthy and can stay healthy. If he does that and pitches at a high level, he can rise through the minor leagues quickly.

Another hitless start (see the early posts in this thread) , but he only went 2IP, 0H, 2BB, 4K, but he made an error that led to an unearned run.
No reason why they took him out ... yet (holding breath).
