The Holdovers (2023)

Post by A Boy Named Seo » Mon Jan 08, 2024 12:14 pm

Currently streaming all over but free on Peacock.

Paul Giamatti plays a teacher at a Massachusetts boarding school who has to take care of the rich kids who can't go home over the 1970 winter break. Highly recommend.

great googly moogly!

Agreed. It was delightful. Paul Giamatti was great as usual.

I feel like we're hitting a curious era of Wes Anderson-y movies that aren't Wes Anderson movies.

It'll probably lead to some weak derivatives, but also open up some new avenues for other talented folks. I'm happy to see early returns here suggest this might be the latter.

Good call. A film-head friend of mine even called it "Payne's Wes Anderson movie" and that felt accurate. But not insulting, the aesthetics were beautiful.

Looking forward to watching this, Giamatti was interviewed yesterday on NPR Fresh Air and he and the host talked about how this character and his character from Sideways are similar, same director too, always a good interview too.

Liked it, didn't LOVE it. It was surprisingly sad which I wasn't prepared for based on the trailer.
Even duct tape can't fix stupid. But it can sure muffle the sound.

I would agree with that, it's the kind of movie critics seem to love though, but I do love Giamatti in most anything, the kid for his first movie was amazing
