Fake News 2024

Post by Edgy MD » Thu Dec 28, 2023 11:57 pm

Doing a basic news search on Google and other basic search engines has become far more complicated of late, due to the number of fake news sights multiplying by 10 (10!) or more in the last few months. Trying to find out what's up with John Curtiss takes a lot of deep diving because 18 of the first 20 hits (sorting for relevancy or recency or whatever) are going to be nonsense sites populated by AI with scraped together clusters of text from old news stories legitimately posted elsewhere. Or they are fake marketing sites allegedly trying to sell me a John Curtiss game-used jersey that I'll never see, but they've manipulated their SEO to make them appear as news sites to browser algorithms.

It's all of a piece, I guess, with a current common refrain that the Web isn't fun anymore, but I don't know if "fun" is where things are failing for me, so much as "functional."

Regulation ain't such a dirty word.
