Chris Simon
NHL player/enforcer for seven NHL teams including the Rangers and Islanders
His 15 year long NHL career saw him collect 144 goals, 161 assists, 101 fights, 1,824 penalty minutes
plus eight suspensions including two of the longest in league history (25 & 30 games) for acts committed
on the ice. He made an estimated $15M during his hockey career but had since filed for bankruptcy and
was said to be living on social assistance and disability checks. No cause of death has been made public
but I'm figuring it'll be one linked in some way to his role as an enforcer and/or the after effects from it.
He leaves four children from a second wife whom he divorced in 2017. He was just 52 years old.

The NHL is currently in legal battles tied to issues such as a link between their sport and brain trauma
and, like the NFL before it, is denying that there is any connection between the two.

Meanwhile, another ex-NHL'er, Russian national Konstantin Koltsov, who was linked for the past several
years to high profile tennis star Aryna Sablanecka, died via a leap from a Miami high-rise. He was 42

Brilliant character actor M. Emmet Walsh, 88. Guy was great in 100 different things. I liked him as one of the broadcasters in "The Best of Times," and also as Nick Cage's odd coworker in "Raising Arizona."

I've shared this here before, but one of Roger Ebert's rules was that “no movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad.”

He could be a bit gloomy at times but I wouldn't call him dour.

I started my reporting career in Connecticut when Leibermann was the attorney general, and I remember it was a upset when he ousted Sen. Lowell Weicker. He was always super accessible and friendly. I admired him.

Ran as a Democrat, became an indy, probably would have run as a Republican if Senator McCain had had the conviction to tell his advisors to stuff it. Was recruited to run on a third-party ticket as well.

Louis Gossett, Jr., 87

I can still hear him calling Richard Gere "May-o-nnaise" in An Officer and A Gentleman . Could easily have gotten himself conflated with Samuel L. Jackson, except he was cleaner mouthed and, unlike with Samuel L. Jackson, you never really got the sense that he was in on the joke.

Grew up in my old neighborhood of Sheepshead Bay in the 1940s, back before there was much of anything there.

According to Wikipedia, he turned down a basketball scholarship to NYU to concentrate on theater, though this would have been around the time when NYU was caught up in a point-shaving scandal, so theater was probably the better option.

RIP

My wife just re-watched The Deep (1977). It was sort of a hate-watch, and she came away stunned by how wrong Lou Gossett was as a Caribbean gangster, because the guy just had too much dignity.

I remember a celebrity tribute to Sidney Poitier that Gossett spoke at some decades ago, and he referred to the guest of honor with "... or, as we referred to him in New York, Sinny Pawta."

An Officer and a Gentleman is rightly remembered as his second-greatest role — his greatest being, of course, The Partridge Family.

I knew that the Allman Brothers were the actual band that teenage Cameron Crowe traveled with and covered for Rolling Stone
magazine, later fictionalized in the movie 'Almost Famous'. But in the wake of Dickey Betts's death Crowe acknowledged that the
Billy Crudup character of 'Stillwater' guitarist Russell Hammond was largely based on Betts, both in looks and mannerisms.

Holy shit!!
I typed Dickey Betts into Google images and 'Dickey Betts 1970' showed up. So I clicked that one and this pic was the first one to come up.
It looks like both could be of the same person from the same angle on the same day only with different film and lighting.

And here they're even wearing the same shirt
