I'm thinking that maybe it can be players who started fewer than half of the games. If Jake Marisnik, for example, gets a start his points would count as 'bench' points.

Then you wouldn't know to the end of the year (or month) if he had started more than half his games. A bench player might be a regular later in the year due to injuries. And what if he plays the exact same number of games as a starter and in a bench role (or DH)?
