Third place seems fair.
The third place vote for Marmol and the first place vote for Thomson? Those, I agree are “yikes”

I recall reading once that Connie Mack’s son stepped in to run the team several times when his dad was in his 70s. Not quite official though.

Allen and Boyer are interesting cases. No to Garvey, Parker, or Tiant. Dr. Jobe would also be an interesting candidate but not John himself.
I’ll admit unfamiliarity with Donaldson and Harris. Time for some reading!

Re: Non-NYM off-season moves
Instead of spending 5/$180 on Cole, that money might better be used on a Corbin Burnes.
If Cole does hit the open market, I wouldn’t be opposed to the Mets signing him for a 2 or 3 year deal.

And you have to be willing to accept that your guy is likely to be overpaid at the back end of that deal. I would reword this as: you have to be willing to potentially make difficult decisions about benching/releasing a player and the end of the contract when he’s still owed money. A 10 or 12 or 15...

Re: Go Get Juan Soto
I'm pretty certain the Mets will be in on Soto, and least until and unless he asks for a tent in the parking lot. And I'm very much hoping they sign him. He can have a tent in the parking lot, or his own merchandise stand, or whatever else he wants. (Incidentally, the original 10 year/opt-out after...

I would expect the lawyers advised them to give the refund for a game they prospectively cannot attend (and during which they have not violated license terms, since the game hasn’t started yet). It’s the easiest way — “Your ticket is a revocable license, and we just revoked it. Here’s your money bac...

Re: Post-Season Ticket Prices (Split from "They Can Do This - Again and Again - Game Two Post Season IGT 10/06/24 NYM at
Those NY Post “articles” — and that is a generous term — about ticket prices (they regularly run them about Taylor Swift shows and other high demand events) are thinly-disguised clickbait/advertisements with sponsored links to secondary market sellers. It’s not exactly surprising for the NY Post but...

Re: In World Series Thread - 2024
Gotta say, this is the first time I've heard the argument that having the top teams and several of the games top stars in the WS makes it a less interesting matchup. Personally I prefer seeing two first place teams playing for the championship over last year's AL's 4th best vs NL's 6th No one said ...

It is wrong and should be fixed. We can all agree on that.
But like all awful MLB decisions, it’s money-driven.

This is the least appealing or interesting World Series matchup since Satan’s Series of 2009. No thanks. Not liking either team is understandable. I just don't think that makes it uninteresting. I didn’t say it was uninteresting because the teams are unlikeable. The Dodgers, Braves, Phillies, Astro...

The primary sale tickets were $900+ for standing room at Yankee Stadium. It’s a seller’s market, and the teams knew it when selling the tickets. The markup on the secondary market is, on a percentage basis, smaller than in past years since the primary sale prices were so high.

He'll be 33 in April of 2025 and on last year of his contract, and by then 3 years removed from his batting title. He’s signed for 2 more years (2025 and 2026) plus a club option for 2027. He can play multiple positions and while he’s not cheap, it’s not an albatross contract either. I’m fine penci...

Re: Who do you want back, and who should go?
I think the “we’re not sure we have room for him” approach is misguided. There are always injuries and things moving around. You can worry about the roster cut-down in March. Sign the good players and then figure it out. Now, if the Mets want to part with Iglesias because career-year-at-age-34 is no...

Who do you want to come back, and who do wave a fond farewell to? Farewell to: JD Martinez, Jose Quintana, Brooks Raley, Luis Severino Would like to retain: Pete Alonso, Sean Manaea, Phil Maton (I believe the Mets have a club option) Would consider retaining, on the right deal: Bader, Iglesias, Ott...

Re: NCLS Game 6 Oct 20 2024 8 PM Mets at Dodgers "The Power of Love"
A really fun season, and a team that overachieved expectations is really enjoyable to watch. This might be the first time ever that the Mets were truly outmatched by a better opponent in a postseason series, and didn’t really have a chance to win. The Mets have a good core but there is a talent gap ...

I’m not sure they win this series but I do think they have fight in them to send it back to LA, and I’ll take that small victory. And I do agree this is a stark reminder that the Mets are not as good as they have seemed at times. Lot of bad ju-ju at the park tonight, alas. Fans tried hard but this w...
