Re: IGT - 06/03 Mets at Nats - Time to Get Going

Was Jack"Hairbredth Harry" pitching? Hamilton was the team's closer in 1966. He'd come in with a lead and allow just enough runs (usually by walks) to keep the lead, usually by ending things with a strikeout. Hamilton was traded to the Angels the next year, where he threw the pitch that en...

Steve Miller (the writer, not the musician)

Steve Miller, who with his partner Sharon Lee, wrote the popular Liadan Universe space opera novels died on 2/20. I've known Steve for many years (and Sharon for even longer) from science fiction conventions. They've attended Albacon several times. Last November, he contacted programming for the Ast...

Re: theoretical deGrom question

The fans stuck with Andrew Young...

But it was clear that DeGrom had poor run support and a bullpen that couldn't hold a lead. Even without modern analytics, it was clear his won-lost record did not reflect how well he pitched.

Schrodinger's ballgame! Is the game alive or dead?

But Norman Rockwell has it covered.

A Wisconsin bar offered free drinks if the Jets lost. When Rodgers went down, there were cheers and the patrons figured they'd have free drinks all evening.

So they thought....

Re: New NFL Kickoff Rule

I've just never understood the origin or the purpose of the rule. It seems to exist for no reason other than to stop play for the sake of stopping play. I didn't know, but here's what I found. It goes back to the time when there was no large clock on the field. The ref timed the game with a stopwat...

A shortstop and a catcher. Two positions where they're lacking in prospects. <Sarcasm> My first thought. Rule 1: You don't draft [or make down the road trades] based on current positional need Rule 2: See Rule 1 If this was a Now! trade (for, say, AAA guys on the verge of promotion) that's a differ...

No surprise. With Alvarez playing the way he had, Sanchez was 4th on the depth chart with little chance of being called up.

Nido will be gone when Narvaez comes off the IL.

Re: Mets Sign Gary Sanchez

This is insurance. Nido is out of options. Once Navaez returns, there's a chance he'll be lost. His hitting is pathetic, but he's considered a good defender, so another team may snatch him up. They'll need someone at Syracuse who can be called up if Navaez or Alvarez gets hurt. Sanchez has caught in...

And Don Cardwell, who was an important piece in the 1969 team.

Bosch said from the beginning that Cardwell would make the trade look good.

I'm surprised and touched that people are being so kind.

I'm feeling better, but I'm not sure if I passed the stone. It's still sore, but not as bad as when I went to the ER. In any case, they have given me some drugs to help empty things out.

Thanks again.

Jerry Samuels. The name might not ring a bell, but he wrote and recorded one of the weirdest top 40 hits of the 60. It was one of the few 45s I actually bought.

Yes, he was Napoleon XIV.

He took classes at my Alma Mater when he was stationed here in Schenectady. The college didn't keep records of it because he was nonmatriculed, but there's no reason to doubt his claim.

What I find most amazing is his fight against the Guinea worm, going from 3.5 million cases a year to 13 last year.

Seemed like a nice guy, but when Pete came along, there was no place for him to play.

I remember him best when someone had a walk-off hit. Dom was injured and used a scooter for one leg and came onto the field to join the celebration.

I'd like to note that, while lovers of J. Giels Band's Full House are certainly correct in recognizing it as a career standout, what a terrible cover it has for a career-defining live album. Rather than tease the audience with a blurry, stage-lit photo that hints of the excitement of being at a sho...
