Did Mendoza ever say who would have played second base if there had been a bottom of the ninth?

No, but expectation is Torrens. Mendoza also subbed out the last regular infielder in the August extra inning win against the Braves and said then it would have been Torrens (who has played first, second, and third in the majors before).

If you believed that, he wouldn't be out there in the first place.

There was no reason to believe he was tiring. There was no reason to believe he was a worse matchup against the coming batters. There was no demonstration that he wasn't in control of his stuff.

There are only going to be so many guys who are effective on a given day. The best way to make sure you have any one of them on the mound is to stick with somebody who has demonstrated he is one of them.

If he falters, the next guy is still available.

If the next guy is put in pre-emptively, and he falters, you've already burned that opportunity.

Why did Mendoza pull Manaea so early?

86 pitches isn’t exactly early. It was either going to be 5 or 6 innings from Manaea. And it wasn’t exactly an easy 5 innings.

Stanek and Garrett pitched clean innings. Its funny how this works. Nobody ever complains about Mendoza when a reliever pitches a scoreless inning. When should Manaea have been removed? Only after he loads the bases with no outs? Only after he's given up five runs in one inning? Manaea was used yesterday pretty much the same way he's been used all season long.

I didn't complain. I said I didn't watch the game and asked why Manaea was pulled early.

To me, 5 innings, 86 pitches is early. He'd given up only two runs, one of them on a solo HR to the first batter. Generally, if you can get another inning out of your ace, that's a better bet than whatever additional reliever you have to rely on.

If he was struggling, and was dodging bullets, then that's a valid reason to pull your starter.

To tell you the truth, I didn't even see your post when I wrote mine.

It was tied, I went to bathe, I come back three minutes later and the game was over, Brewers win.

Who's the dork who gave it up?
