Memories of Joe Hudson

Post by Edgy MD » Fri Jan 03, 2025 11:30 pm

Signed away by Houston way back on December 9, interrupting the very faintest of Met legacies, coming to the plate zero times, playing a single inning behind the dish, catching (or blocking or retrieving) 21 pitches.

To his credit, his single inning was at the finish of an 11-1 Mets victory, with only one guy reaching base, and two going down on strikes. Those two were Miguel Amaya and Tomás Nido, but triumph is triumph. It was a pretty impressive game as the Mets matched up against the Cubs' Shota Imanaga, who had been pretty damned indomitable up until that point, and hit him all over the park and back again.

Drew Smith was on the mound for that sweet inning. His season (and quite possibly his Mets career) would end with his next appearance two days later.

I remember he looked like he could be Grant Hartwig's brother. He's another in a long line of very short-lived catchers named "Joe." Joe Hietpas, Joe DePastino, Joe Hudson.

I hope everybody remembers that game where the Mets beat the pants off of Imanaga, though.

It was a sweet part of the turnaround of the Mets season, and raised the guy's ERA a full run. He had been cruising toward the Rookie of the Year Award at that point, and while he still would have likely been overcome by Paul Skenes, he probably would have been runner-up at least without that start. He instead finished fourth and the Cubs continued to fade.
