The Mets are talking about Tanner Scott
Several reports (probably all stemming from the same source, naturally) say that the Mets have been in discussions with the Padres' free-agent reliever Tanner Scott.
It's generally assumed that, in addition to adding another bat, who may or may not be Pete Alonso, the Mets are focused on bolstering their bullpen. And Scott is apparently one that they're interested in.
Thirty years old, left-handed, formerly with the Orioles and Marlins. Last year, in Miami and San Diego, he had a 1.75 ERA and 22 saves over 72 innings.
Buzz is that he wants four years, and there's some skepticism that Stearns will go for a contract of that length.

Good insurance long term should Diaz leave in his option year.
And until then, a dynamic bullpen duo.
I'm all in on this one.

He's got a live arm. Four years for a reliever is a risk but hell it's not my money so I say yay

Tanner Scott has been good for two years. He was kinda doodoo before then. Does anyone know what happened? Arm slot? Steroids? Just figured it out?

Sounds like every other relief pitcher that had a really good year or two. Where are the relievers that have five or six or seven terrific years the way position players like David Wright or Dave Parker or Dale Murphy or Dave Winfield or Keith Hernandez have five or six or seven great years? They're unicorns.Centerfield wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 1:29 pm Tanner Scott has been good for two years. He was kinda doodoo before then. Does anyone know what happened?

This bullpen is a wreck. Sign the live arm and give him what he wants.

Yeah, they're few and far between. Though in fairness, at the price point Tanner Scott wants to be at, he should be one of the elite guys who perform year in and year out.batmagadanleadoff wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 2:34 pmSounds like every other relief pitcher that had a really good year or two. What struck me about Scott was not the "good year, bad year" inconsistency like we see in some guys. Basically, he was a 5+ ERA guy with a WHIP around 1.5, then he flipped the switch and has been lights out the last two years. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there was a mechanical adjustment, or went to Driveline, or roided up. Something.
Re: The Mets are talking about Tanner Scott
If you agree to a four-year deal, you just have to go into that accepting that you're betting on him performing well in two of those years. Nothing is guaranteed, but experience would suggest that to be something like the most likely outcome.
Whether or not that makes the deal worthwhile is up to somebody else, but obviously, there's only so much a risk a winning team can carry at a time.
Also, measuring the true impact of effective relief pitching relative to other investments is still a matter that's very much in dispute.

If that’s the range then yeah. I’d be good with that.

The bullpen definitely could use some proven arms. Particularly left handed ones.

I halfway expect the Dodgers to sign Alonso, Bregman, and Santander by the end of the day. Just because they can.

Is Scott better than Minter? I wonder if Sterns chose between the two, and whether signing both was an option.
Wondering if bringing Stanek back is an option.

Plus, if Ohtani's throwing arm recovers smoothly like it's expected to, it's as if the Dodgers pick up yet another top of the rotation ace pitcher on top of everything else.

Is anybody besides the Mets, Yankees and Dodgers even trying?

Trying to be one of the 40% of the teams that make the playoffs. That's room for nine other teams. I'd bet against the Dodgers winning the series in '25 no matter who else they get on top of who they already got and have. I'd bet against any specific one team winning it all.

It's beginning to resemble the Premier League where there are a small handful of international superteams in with the regular clubs. These teams have a much larger addressable market, I think that's the idea.
