I’ll add that it really should be considered unusual for time frame and the persons who ended up finding them. These may have been recluses, but they certainly were not a pair of Eleanor Rigbys. They certainly have living loved ones and friends, etc. Yet NO ONE bothered to see how they were!?
While a week (nine days?) is a long time to be dead inside your house, it's not necessarily a long time to not hear from a friend or family member.
Lots of things about this story were odd. That one is way down the list IMO.

The two things I saw online were a collector receiving his letter back from Gallagher where the USPS returned it marked deceased back in October. The second was a person in December that received a note back from the Mrs stating that Bob had passed. No obituary or memorial could be found online. Last known response was in June. Bob had been good to his fans through the years with mail. My guess is the Newsweek writer picked up on this and for whatever reason decided to contact the family.

On another note, I met Bob at a public signing in 2006 in NJ with other lesser seen Mets Doc Medich and Johnny Stephenson. He seemed like a good guy and told my two kids to study hard in school and pay attention to Mom and Dad. Told me he was a longtime educator.

I was trying to imply it the whole time, but I was trying to make an indictment about their strained relationship with their kids (assuming she had at least one prior to her marriage to Gene). Apparently they hadn’t had contact with Gene in 4 months or so.

That’s the family part where I coming from, the direct nuclear one, not some random nephew, cousin, etc that you only know from social media posts.

You seemed to be coming off like Met fandom should have been more aware of Bob Gallagher’s passing back in August.

And lamenting the fickleness of “fame,” such as it can be for certain persons, and how quickly it can fade, that can make one not realize the passing of someone they still retain knowledge of what made them notable (ie obscure and random 1970s infielders for the baseball team you rooted for).

Despite the fact that his passing was handled normally by those personally known to him and was appropriate in terms of the anonymity he sought after his playing career ended.

He was not discovered dead for many days by someone making a work order appointment, or police responding to a potential dead person in the domicile report.

That really the point of why I think you are lamenting a bit too hard over not knowing some random obscure 1970s Met died until months after the fact.

I am not coming off like anything. I wrote that something was sad. I wrote that because it was sad. I did not and would not indict my fellow fans.

Then I apologize for my inference and not just thread derailment, but change in transportation method entirely ;)

For what it is worth, I am a fan too — an engaged one. And I knew no more than most — and clearly less than many.

The failure here was not that of autograph seekers, and I apologize for any accidental implication. In the death of traditional journalism, our fact-based system of announcing the passing of our fellow citizens has been badly damaged. We publicly mourn people who have not died, and that just adds to the noise that drowns out any honest decent reporting of people who have actually died.

I have my feelings about that. They are sad.

It's certainly not typical. But it happens. People that live alone die and on occasion, nobody notices for days until the mail piles up, overflowing the mailbox and the stench of their decomposing bodies is so powerful, that the rotting smells can be picked up from distances and through walls. Hackman's case happened to get world-wide attention because he's a celebrity -- a Hollywood actor of legendary status.

Police on Thursday said they discovered the decomposing bodies of a woman and child in a Brooklyn apartment after being alerted to a foul odor emanating from it.

NYPD officials said officers responded to a 911 call around 2 p.m. Wednesday and went to the apartment, which is located on Dumont Avenue at NYCHA’s Unity Plaza complex in Brownsville.

After gaining entry, police said they found a 33-year-old woman and 7-year-old boy unconscious inside. Emergency medical workers pronounced both of them dead at the scene.

Officials said they were still investigating the pair’s relationship and the circumstances of their deaths. Police officers were present at the building Thursday morning.

The city medical examiner’s office was also working to determine their causes of death, according to the NYPD.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and has been updated with additional information.

These were ordinary citizens. The story was picked up in a local paper. You can imagine how many other ordinary people died under those same circumstances just today and yesterday, where their dead bodies weren't discovered promptly. It happens. And it tends to go unreported. Hackman's case was plastered all over the news only because he was a legendary Hollywood actor.

And my point with that case is the same with Hackman, maybe more tragic knowing how far gone he was with Alzheimer’s that he probably assumed the girl in the other room was taking a nap.

Where were those personally known to them, ie nuclear family members?

Were there supposed to be professionals that were supposed to be making routine checks on them? etc.

In any event, point was in comparison to the manner of Gallagher’s. Probably should have used a former player who met a similar in terms of someone falling through the cracks in terms of being off the grid from people who should have been able to help them along.
