Mets Roster Central 2025
Re: Mets Roster Central 2025
I remember Niko Goodrum with the Rochester Red Wings. People would yell "Niko Niko Niko!" whenever he came up.
They also signed a fella named Angel Montero.
And they released some fella named Andinson Ferrer.

José Marte reflects the Mets organizational strategy to increase their Marte factor as much as possible. He was pitching well last season, but a viral infection prematurely ended his season.

As long-time pros with eye-popping minor-league stats but who go extended periods between MLB appearances, Jon Singleton is totally going to make you forget Mike Hessman
Niko Goodrum plays every position on the diamond and has a 5-for-5 MLB game on his record. Against the Braves!!
Both could save the Mets some minor embarrassment by joining the MLB roster by 4/15, as they currently don't seem to have any US-born African American players on their roster. MRC could very well be wrong about this.

José Marte has somehow accrued 2 years and 44 days of service time while appearing in only 39 MLB games. One might figure that experience would get him a AAA assignment, but the Mets have been stockpiling a lot of relievers with MLB experience. Even still, while Mets Roster Central could only fit him on the Binghamton roster with his profile, we suspected the Mets might keep him at extended spring training and not activate him until there was an opening in Syracuse. But nope, Bingo it is.
No such shame for Jon Singleton, who really does single a ton.
Andinson Ferrer, we suspect, got caught tampering with a parking meter, or possibly using loaded dice in a game of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.

Angel Montero is the secret son of Angel Pagán and Rafael Montero. He starts his pro career as a 6'4" 175-pound 17-year-old. We watched a few tik-tok vids of him (kill us now) and his motion looked easy and everything he threw seemed to be around the plate.

Getting a rehab assignment is a good sign for Francisco Álvarez, but it is a haunting omen for those rooting to see how far we could make it into the season without any changes to our Opening Day 26-Player Roster. We haven't double-checked, but we believe it has been at least 180 years since the Mets have gone this far into the season without a transaction affecting the big-league roster.
Since Francisco was already working out in St. Lucie, he did not have to go too far or take too long to report, and he debuted last night, playing five innings behind the dish, catching the 100 mph fastball of Raimon Gómez, but sadly giving up four stolen bases. At the plate, he went 1-for-3 with a strikeout and a GiDP.
Re: Mets Roster Central 2025
RotoWire has his return date (to the Mets) set at April 17. We'll see.
Also, not sure if this was noted, but Jeff McNeil was sent on rehab to St. Lucie. His ETA is 4/21.
The Mets also released a minor leaguer named Robert Dominguez.
Re: Mets Roster Central 2025
-Not known yet whether they’ll option Brazoban or DFA Danny Young.
-No position player move yet announced to replace Siri.
Re: Mets Roster Central 2025
Anyway, Siri to the IL, Azocar up.
Blackburn to Brooklyn for rehab; McNeil to Binghamton for rehab.

Mets Roster Central looks forward to Jeff McNivins finally launching his 2025 season. Most reportage suggests he will displace Brett Baty upon his arrival. That is probably correct, as the thinking might suggest Baty could use the work and the opportunity to find his stroke in AAA, but we are hoping he gets José Azocar's spot. Baty just looks like part of the team, as unscientific an assessment as that is.

Robert Dominguez got the all-too-common shittiest of deals. He hadn't appeared in a game since 2021. It is against the rules to release somebody while they are on the injured list, so he finally gets out there with St. Lucie, throws his first inning since 2021, and even though he gave up a run, he probably came back to the dugout feeling good that he finally got to let it rip in competition, and then got back to his locker to discover (if only metaphorically) his pink slip.
Living the dream.

Francisco Álvarez remains a beautiful specimen to behold, but having gone 1-for-10 with St. Lucie during his rehab visit, it remains an open question how much of the catching he will reclaim upon his return. Rather than the usual 80% a first-string catcher typically gets, we suspect it will be more like 60%, and a 50-50 split with Luíis Torrens is certainly not out of the question.

The Mets clearly think highly of Justin Hagenman. They gave him an MLB contract despite him never having appeared in the big leagues (something they have seemingly done with one guy every season of late, with no payoff yet) and him logging a 4.91 ERA in AAA with Worcester last year. And then they give him the first callup for an emergency quasi-start, despite him having (to MRC's observation) the weakest professional profile of all their Syracuse starters. But past is but prologue, and a pile of stats doesn't tell you everything. We wish his Mets debut was more than 50 pitches however, as the team ran out of pitching by game's end.

Jeff McKnuckles seems to have found his power stroke during his rehab, and hopefully it keeps the slow start monster that has haunted him the last two seasons at bay.
Paul Blackburn may see his return timed not to his readiness, but to when an actual opening on the staff is available. Right now, it is hard to find.

Are you curious who the woman in my avatar is? She has nothing to do with the Mets but everything to do with this website.
Re: Mets Roster Central 2025
Minter to IL.
Minor leaguer Rowdey Jordan traded to Astros. Rowdey Jordan is a name that fits Texas more, anyway.
Niko Goodrum, who just signed a contract with NY, has retired. They must have really left a bad impression! He hit just .229 in 12 games with Syracuse, but his .391 OBP was still promising.

Rowdey Jordan is a long-time Mets minor-leaguer. He had been an infielder most of the way up the ladder but had been gradually transitioning to the outfield, while still hitting like an infielder. He had played seven games this season between AA and AAA and minor league free agency was looming.

Former Virgina Tech pitcher Jordan Geber had been with the organization since 2022. The writing must have been on the wall, because despite his rocky start, José Ureña's callup was about to create some elbow room in the Syracuse staff, but the room was not for Gebby.

Most reporting on the Hayden Senger demotion suggested he had established himself as a viable MLB catcher. Mets Roster Central is soberly looking at his .421 OPS and thinking that reporting seemed more than generous.
Most at MRC are committed to a 6:5 infielder/outfielder ratio, and so were disappointed to see Brett Baty get the demotion when it isn't really clear what José Azocar's role is. But hopefully he finds his stroke and is back soon.

Yoandri Gonzalez was signed as a 19-year-old Cuban expatriate back in October, and his career has somehow ended without him making an appearance. Until we hear otherwise, we are guessing he wasn't able to secure a work permit and got grabbed off the street and put on a midnight flight to Havana.
José Ureña was getting the job done with a 2.89 ERA through three starts for Syracuse, but he only logged 9.1 innings during those three starts. It isn't clear whether the Mets intended to deploy him as a starter or as a reliever, and after a lot of discussion, MRC guessed that he was going to serve as an opener to offset some of the short workdays they are affording to Clay Holmes and Griffin Canning.
After his ugly debut this afternoon, our new guess is that he is going to be deployed primarily to DFA status.
We do not, under any circumstances anticipate him handing a flag to any future Veteran of the Game.
