Ten Mets on the Ballot (Hall of Fame 2024)
Re: Ten Mets on the Ballot (Hall of Fame 2024)
Interesting to see Beltran get the check but not Jones.

This time Jones but not Beltran

Re: Ten Mets on the Ballot (Hall of Fame 2024)
This reminds me of how long it's been since I was a "baseball fan" as opposed to a Mets fan. Players have come along and had potentially Hall-of-Fame worthy careers and have been retired for five or more years and I'm barely familiar with them. I think Mark Buehrle was a pitcher, but I couldn't say what team or teams he was on. And the name Victor Martinez doesn't ring a bell at all. I have no idea who he is. And James Shields is a mystery as well.

Sure, career American Leaguers are playing the game in a parallel shadow universe. That's always been kinda true for me.
James Shields' appearance on the ballot suggests a question, though: Who was the last active Devil Ray? Scott Kazmir? Is it possible that that the question has not been decided?

And now I’m thinking of the many Ray’s Pizzas with variations of “famous” and/or “original” in their names in the NYC area! Either that or I’m just in the mood for some pizza ;)metsmarathon wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 1:40 pm and evan longoria is the last remaining active original ray. maybe david price too if he hasn't officially retired yet.

I was unaware, until just now, what a career Adrian Beltre had. 477 homers, 3,166 hits, .286/.339/.480. Hall of Fame similarity scores close to Dave Winfield, Eddie Murray, and Cal Ripken. (And Carlos Beltran is near that neighborhood as well.) I had been surprised that he was on all ballots we've seen so far, but I guess I shouldn't have been.

I thought he was going to be a moron or making some dumb point, but he is just a "small hall" guy and Beltre is on the wrong side of the line for him. Respectable, even if I disagree.
There, I save you all a read.

I don't know. That was some pretty terrible reading, from the thesis paragraph on.
That guy got paid to write that.

If Beltre isn't the best of the best then surely Manny isn't either ? Of course Bill has covered the Red Sox for years though

As possibly the only guy to not vote for beltre, his argument against him is, “meh”.
Like, no further explanation.
What. The. Actual. Fuck.
He’s all mister small-hall. Sure. Then don’t vote for Ortiz. And don’t bitch that PEDs are keeping out the best of the sawx players either.
Ugh. Beltre is a much better player than Ortiz, manny, Jeter. More complete. More counting.
6th best 3b ever vs 14th, using bWAR’s jaws.
Jetes needs a hell of an aura and mystique boost to climb over that, but Beltre isn’t worthy? Please.
Comparing manny to Beltre would be equally unfair. Unless all you look at is home runs.
Ugh.
The least you could do is explain yourself!

Yeah, my research backs this up. By returning from a few years away from baseball in 2021 to throw 11 1/3 innings for the Giants, Kazmir apparently grabbed the title of Last Active Devil Ray. In taking this throne, he deposed Ben Zobrist, whose last action came on September 29, 2019, one day after Edwin Jackson's final appearance.metsmarathon wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 1:40 pm near as i can tell, yeah, scott kazmir was the last active devil ray.
