Brayhans Barreto is more than just a smudgy thumbnail pic. Affectionaly called "Brains" by his legions of fans here at Mets Roster Central HQ, leaves the organization as a 6'4" lefty with high walk numbers but higher strikeout figures. His performances in his first two seasons haven't really been that bad, so I'm guessing the stepped on some toes in camp.

Not so brainy, Brains.

José Quintana, lest it be forgotten, leaves the Mets as the all-time winningest Colombian-born pitcher in MLB history, a full 21 victories ahead of former teammate Julio Teheran. The Mets were really looking like Team Colombia for a few minutes there.

Most of the folks ticketed for Minorleaguecampistan in this batch were high-end prospects who were just visiting for the sake of acclimations. Some of the suprises, however, include:

... Kevin Parada, who has lost virtually of his first-round luster, and is now sent off while a several other catchers of obscure provenance remain.

... Rafael Ortega, who had little chance of elbowing his way into a crowded outfield picture, but might have expected to last deeper into camp based on his age and bountiful MLB experience.

... Sean Reid-Foley, who pitched effectively at the MLB level and showed some new velocity before getting hurt last season. I am guessing that they don't see him as likely ready for opening day, but neither see him as stashable on the 60 after appearing already in the spring, so they want to sneak him through waivers while rosters are squeezed tight.

His apparent waivering is according to reports, but remains unofficial, as waivers don't get publicly announced unless/until somebody either clears them or is claimed.

Huascar Brazobán had started the offseason, like, third on the Mets' bullpen depth charts, but then spent the winter getting bounced lower and lower as the Mets added veteran pieces without options, so a sudden roster opening has to be a breath of fresh air after being on the outside looking in since about the new year. He not only has Reid-Foley's waivering to thank, but also the injuries to Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas.

I could have totally glanced over it, but Sean Reid-Foley was outrighted to Syracuse.

Also they released some fella named Jeremy Peguero.

The strategy of trying to sneak Sean Reid-Foley through waivers in the middle of Spring Training, rather than at the end, turned out to work out brilliantly. It was sneaky fast like an SRF fastball.

Maybe Jeremy Peguero didn't have a lot to recommend him — like "control" or "a face" — but he had damned high strikeout numbers to go with his queasily high walk numbers, and a Doug Sisk-like ability to keep the ball in the park, averaging 0.2 homeruns per nine innings over his professional career. And while his walks caught up to him a little, leaving him with a 4.08 career ERA, that 2.60 figure in 2024 was nothing to sneeze at.

Those strikeouts and that homerun-stinginess will play. But sadly, Jeremy won't play anymore — at least not for the Mets.

This second big round of cuts surprisingly includes pretty much the same amount of 40-Player Roster guys as it does NRI guys. The big surprise, however, is Kevin Herget, who most of the MRC staff had pegged for pretty much a-lock-if-healthy status for the Opening Day roster. But he does have an option, and this is what options are for.

The bump gives a great big opportunity for Dedniel Nuñez, who has had the numbers really going against him, despite being the Mets' best reliever for three weeks or maybe more last summer. (In fairness, that same compliment could be paid to about a half dozen guys from last year.)

Had he not already been smuggled through waivers, this opportunity might have belonged to Sean Reid-Foley, but I think the Mets don't think he is fully recovered enough to treat as a serious option.

Chris Williams gets first dibs at that backup catcher spot, but it is probably wide open for Jakson Reetz, Kevin Parada, and Hayden Senger to show their quality. It'll be pretty hard for Parada, though, as he has already been dismissed from big-league camp.

Has broken left hamate bone replaced quad strain as the injury of the year?
Both Alvarez and Hagenman have it.
Is it catching, or are only batterymen at risk?

Two new Mets prospects come to the organization from highly divergent, but equally interesting, paths.

Eneas Alexander is a Bahamian prospect who has spent most of his teenage years in developmental academies in the US, ultimately showcasing his skills back in his native Bahamas at a tryout event organized by Antoan Richardson. Eneas follows Bohan Adderley (please let his nickname be "Cannonball") as the second Bahamian infielder the Mets have signed in as many years. So if you are wondering what qualities to look for in a first-base coach, maybe consider finding a guy who adds value having an inside track on a distinct scouting territory.

Trace Willhoite is seven years older, signing his first pro contract at 24, having played three full seasons at Kentucky's Lipscomb University, which a quick survey reveals none of the Mets Roster Central staffers believe they have heard of. It's a Division I school in the Atlantic Sun Conference, so they are a real thing and everything, so the shame is on us. He didn't debut with Lipscomb until he was 21, however, presumably having missed the COVID season and perhaps a second to injury, ultimately playing his final season as a graduate. Along the way, he played in five different summer wood-bat leagues (a record, we are presuming), and really hit and hit with power most everywhere he has gone.

The final league he played in was the MLB Draft League, but what good is such a circuit when a guy can put up a .986 OPS at third base and still not get drafted?

High LevelMLB (2024)MLB (2024)

The reported injury to Jeff McNeil may not appear to be devastatingly long-term, but combined with the shoulder injury that threatens to sideline Nick Madrigal for the entire year, really scrambles the peas with regard to the Mets Opening-Day infield picture.

While we've been treating Ronny Mauricio as the leading candidate for the fifth (and only reserve) infield spot, that has always been far from a certainty, as it is unclear whether the Mets think of Mauricio as recovered enough for the day-to-day grind of MLB action, under an MLB spotlight. In that sense, the McNeil injury has possibly made it less likely that Mauricio joins the OD squad, and the fact that he has yet to see any game action really puts the status we have been projecting in doubt.

But there are three guys on the roster pushing on him, and the first two — Brett Baty and Jared Young don't really play the middle of the diamond, so there is some real helium underneath Luisangel Acuña right now. Young is in minor-league camp already, but Baty started at second today, going 1-for-3 with a double, so we may well see him displace Mauricio in our next update. Non-roster players Luis De Los Santos and Donovan Walton are also still camping with the team, and so remain in the picture, but who would be shocked to see José Iglesias arrive from San Diego's Cactus League training site in Peoria, perhaps in exchange for one of the Mets excess outfielders?

Nobody at Mets Roster Central would be. That much is for certain.

High LevelMLB (2024)

Phil Maton started the offseason getting his option promptly declined by the Mets, and waited all the way until March 14 to find a new home, so it was clearly a long winter for him. The longest. But he did get an MLB contract, and it was with the favorite team of the Paducah, Kentucky native.

Phil was the last option out of the bullpen for the Mets for much of the offseason, improving as the playoffs progressed, logging a 27.00 ERA in one inning in the Wild Car Series against Milwaukee, a 5.40 ERA in one and two thirds innings in the NLDS against the Phils, and a 4.91 ERA in three and two thirds innings in the Championship Series against the Dodgers. The pattern suggests that, had the Mets advanced to the World Series, he might have advanced himself into the realm of effective, but he actually has a long-established record of post-season success across his career, adding up to a 2.57 ERA in 28 innings under the October glare, even counting his ineffectiveness as a Met.

That may not be particularly likely to help the Cards this year, though.

High LevelMLB (2023)MLB (2024)

With Ronny Mauricio now officially out of the picture, he becomes the third Mets MLB-roster-ensconced infielder with a name beginning with M to find to become an Opening Day scratch, following Nick Madrigal and Jeff McNeil. While Jared Young has a touch more established versatility than Brett Baty, he has already been banished to minor-league camp, so unless the Mets find a way to get Yonny Hernandez or Donovan Walton onto their big-league roster, they are going to have to go forward with Luisangel Acuña and Brett Baty sharing second base, while Baty does defensive subbing for Mark Vientos and Acoonie provides Francisco Lindor insurance.

This is workable, and can even get some important at-bats to players who could be well served by them, but it is perhaps sub-ideal, depth wise.

Coming up later ... three heartbreaking releases!

That fella the Mets signed out of college not a month-and-a-half ago, Andrew Carson, has been released. They also released Hayden Cooper and Eldridge Armstrong.

An update for today as the staff of Mets Roster Central tries to figure out how and when Luke Ritter's face got put in Starling Marte's spot on our grid.

One more indication that it will take a sign from God to get the Mets to re-acquire José Iglesias, Diego Castillo becomes the highest profile minor-league middle-infielder healthy enough to take a reserve slot away from Brett Baty or Luisangel Acuña.

MLB (2024)

The three releasarinos are especially tragic here as they each get sent packing without having ever appeared in a professional game. Andrew Carson, you may remember, was signed only six weeks ago taking one of the most roundabout routes to gaining his first professional contract at 24, having played for three different colleges and universities, the last one as a grad student, and having particpated in five different summer amateur wood bat leagues. Hopefully he pockets some condiments on the way out the door.

Eldridge Armstrong III's release is of particular concern to uni watchers who hoped to see a "III" appear for the first time on a Metly back. Having already suffered through the release of St. Lucie reliever Nick Bautista III, their despair is palpable. Outfielder Eli Serrano III, expected to start the year in Brooklyn, is the last, best hope for this group, and the Cyclones are reportedly adding staff to accomodate the expected upswell in ticket demand.

The real story of the day is Chris Williams bumped aside in the battle for backup catcher. Jakson Reetz takes the catbird seat, but
Hayden Senger is still in the picture.

Anthony Gose is unlikely to actually open the season with Binghamton, but he staffers need to add a bunch of guys to the Injured List before we can confirm there is Syracusean room for him. Ten guys hit the 60-Day IL yesterday, along with two more hitting the full-season IL, so there is likely AAA room for Antonio.

HEY!
My kid, Trey Mclaughlin is not only still in camp, but closing games. He got his first save the other day.
My daughter had dinner with his mother last night, and they both would be very mad at you if I told them you are ignoring him.
He at least deserves a "Still in camp" mention.
Later
“The measure of a man is what he does with power”- Plato
Apparently one did. He can't get away from the tell.
I have never insulted anyone. I simply describe them, accurately.

Like many players, Trey McLoughlin has been floated up for games, but has never been listed as an official camp invitee.

Exciting to see the leaky spine of Chris Blackburn healed enough to get him in a position to make the Opening Day roster, and perhaps soon give the Mets that six-man rotation they have been craving.

Although Blackburn seemingly bounces Dedniel Nuñez out of the picture, he is still in camp and on the 40, so there may be a spot for him yet.

The return of Billy McKinney may have been an over-reaction to a temporary injury absence by Jesse Winker. Billy's second coming is still very welcome because (1) he gave the Mets the best month of his MLB life, just when they needed it most, (2) has been bad or terrible everywhere else, except a modest mediocrity with the Yankees, (3) he now has three organizations with which he has had two tenures, which means folks like him, and (4) is generally a terror in the minors.

Two big pieces of news for the world to chew on here.

First is that Hayden Senger has beaten out three guys with higher profiles for that backup catcher slot. Kevin Parada shouldn't be much of a surprise, as more reps would certainly seem to be the plan for him, but Chris Williams and Jakson Reetz are both dudes with MLB experience, but he knocked one to the left and one to the right and unless he hurts himself in the next couple of days, he will be going north.

Second is that José Ureña, who has had a pretty low-performing camp, has decided to stick around and be the first early-season emergency option for the Mets battered rotation. So don't hold your breath waiting for a Julio Teheran reunion.

The Mets traded for a minor leaguer Troy Schreffler, formerly of the Phillies.

They traded away minor leaguer Michael Hobbs to the Mariners.

They released minor leaguer Rocky Solano.

Also, not sure if it was reported, but one of the Luis Morenos was brought back, but I'm not sure which. I'm pretty sure it is the 1999-born one.

Also, it looks like Mateo Gil signed with the Charros de Jalisco.

Yeah, we have searched the World Wide Web for reports of the re-signing of either of Los Luíses Morenos, but the records we have show them both as free agents, which clearly isn't true, because one of them has been appearing in Spring Training games and kind of killing it.

We will try to get to the bottom of of his status (and specific identity!), along with that of Mateo Gil in a coming update.

Perhaps not all of these guys hitting the Injured List are recovering from a torn UCL and the subsequent surgical procedure, but our staff did a deep dive, and every one we were able to get information on — even the lone outfielder among our pitchers — was indeed recovering from the same injury.

The goodish news is that many (some) of these guys are already in the late stages of recovery, have participated in spring workouts, and are presumably raring to go, but the organization is having them sit out the early part of the season to protect them from the vagaries of spring weather.

You can't help but root for a guy named Rocky — especially a Dominican ‚ but it was not to be for Solano. Getting released at the start of spring training sucks, but at least you can gripe that the team didn't give you a real chance after you spent the off-season getting healthy and fine-tuning your game and getting in the best shape of your life. But for Rocky, getting released at the end of spring training, he gets to go home knowing that the team took a long, hard look at his shit, and weren't impressed.

His one season in the DSL backed that up. His batting average was low, but also, an alarmingly low number of his hits were for extra bases. He could maybe pad that number with a high walk rate, but that wasn't in his package either. Perhaps he was a speed demon, but when you rarely get on base, that isn't going to show up much, and nine stolen bases certainly weren't going to save him.

You might say that he was the complete package.

The end result of his three-team offseason journey is especially disappointing to our staff back in Stockholm, because Mustache Prospectus has him as a potential first-ballot Hall-of-Famer, and The International Mustache Hall of Fame is also located in Sweden's capital.

Before we say goodbye, let's get a full-size shot of that guy's pride and joy, shall we?

David Stearns talked extensively about Dedniel Nuñez in the booth the other day, and it was clear the Mets have plans for him this season, and it wasn't just a numbers game keeping him from coming north with the team, but he is still a few weeks short in his recovery from last-season's right pronator strain.

Get a good look at Troy Schreffler's last name. There is an R in there right after the CH that you might tend to gloss over, but it belongs there, as counter-intuitive as that may seem.

He is probably pissed at this strange late-season trade for a mysterious bounty, as he is from Harrisburg, PA, and possibly grew up loving the Phightin' Phils, but Harrisburg is also the AAA Nats' home, so maybe allegiances are torn.

We are speculating that he is somehow the return on the trade for Michael Hobbs and his mustache, and the Mariners have sent someone or something to Philadelphia to complete a three-way deal. Anyhow, Schreffy is a good speed and defense guy out of the University of Maryland, who has been working in hitting labs to stay back and turn on the ball. Look for him in Brooklyn.

Troy Schreffler's a U of Maryland Terrapin, so he's go that going for him. (Go Terps)

Luis Moreno popped up in minor league box scores a lot last year, as I saw he was used as both a starter and reliever. He started the year getting clobbered (ERA around 6). Then as the year progressed, he got it down into the 4's. He had a few good outings with the big club this spring. I hope he continues to improve this year.
As for another Luis Moreno? I got nuthin'.

Jaylen Palmer signed to play in the Cubs chain. Yolmer Sanchez signed with the Angels.

Mets signed a young'un named Georwill Rodriguez. They also signed some fella named Cesar Acosta. There was a mysterious signing of an Arturo, known only as Arturo ???, but it has been revealed that he is Arturo Sevilla.

The reason the Mets lost on Opening Day is Mets Roster Central failed to have final updates filed in time. No two ways about it.

So much young blood shed in one day. The three pitchers here had not advanced beyond the minor leagues' lowest levels, and Ricardo Baptist hadn't appeared in a game since 2021, when his short amount of work included a Nook LaLoosh-esque 22 walks and three hit-batsmen in 11 2/3 innings. So he must've had an impressive arm if the Mets had been keeping him around for this long after that showing.

Connor Overton had joined the organization a month or so ago, and perhaps there was less attrition during camp than suspected, because he was looking at a Bingo assignment and we speculate that he probably asked for a release, having already put in some time in the big leagues.

Frankly, Mets Roster Central had him projected toward Brooklyn based on his profile to date.

Guys hitting the IL here were as expected, but it is nice to see the team was allowed to backdate the assignments by a few days.

There is a good chance José Azocar and (especially) Alexander Canario will be gone before you are finished reading this post, but keep your fingers crossed. The Mets still managed to break camp with six outfielders.

I thought the Mets were going to be able to trade Canario to a team shy on outfield strength.

Are you curious who the woman in my avatar is? She has nothing to do with the Mets but everything to do with this website.

As we go to pres, there is yet no word on the ultimate fate of Alexander Canario, but one might imagine that no news is bad news, since he was DFA'd at the same time as José Acosta, is six or so years younger, and finished the spring like a house on fire.

Some of us at Mets Roster Central feel like using Canario to replace José Siri sooner rather than later.

I thought I read that Canario also cleared waivers and was re-signed to Syracuse.

OOPS. See next post.

New news:
The Mets were unable to get Canario through waivers and have trade the outfielder to the Pirates for cash.
Too bad. I think there will be a need for him later this season.

And so Candelerio ends up in Pittsburgh, The Land of Candeleria, a year after The Pirates welcomed Isiah Kiner-Falefa to The Land of Kiner, and Brian Reynolds continues to patrol the outfield in The Land of R.J. Reynolds.

The last time I was out in Western Pennsylvania, I saw a sign at the city limit that said, "Welcome to Pittsburgh, the Land of R.J. Reynolds"
