Quiz, anybody?
Re: Quiz, anybody?
You said there was one more to go.
I got Nomo.
I thought there would be no mo'.
Now there's another?

Yeah, I looked right over him. I thought it was strange no one had guessed him...but apparently, someone had.

Matlack?
Re: Quiz, anybody?
Sneaky devil that you are, you tried to slip A.J. Burnett (originally drafted by the Mets) past us, eh?

Re: Quiz, anybody?
Here's what happened: I made up this quiz about a week ago. But I got in the mood to post it only today. So I did. But I couldn't find the piece of paper where I had worked out all the answers. So I did this from memory. I had kind of a feeling that I wasn't remembering all of the answers but I winged it anyways. Turns out, I forgot Nomo and Burnett.MFS62 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 02, 2024 5:55 pmSneaky devil that you are, you tried to slip A.J. Burnett (originally drafted by the Mets) past us, eh?

The most batters Matlack struck out in a season after leaving the Mets was 157.

Re: Quiz, anybody?
I'll post the remaining answer at the start of tonight's Mets game if nobody's gotten it by then.

Re: Quiz, anybody?
The last, or stumping pitcher, is 1969 Met and owner of a Mets World Series ring, Bob Johnson. He struck out 206 batters in 1970, his only season as a member of the KC Royals. The year after, Bob earned his second World Series ring in three years as a member of the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates.
Thank you for playing.

Re: Quiz, anybody?
Pretty good trade sequence for the Royals. They got Johnson, a 200K pitcher and perennial all-star Amos Otis for only the already washed up Joe Foy. Then they flipped Johnson for another all-star and a foundational piece of their (also ex-Met) Whitey Herzog pennant contending teams, shortstop Freddie Patek. Patek and especially Otis would receive MVP votes, too, as Royals.
Re: Quiz, anybody?
I'd've taken about 300 guesses before getting to Johnson. I would've guessed guys I was virtually certain were incorrect (Gooden? Viola? Matz? Byrd?) before Johnson.
I might be wrong, but I seem to remember Youmans got his 200th strikeout against the Mets, and that's why I pulled him out of my butt.

Re: Quiz, anybody?
Johnson was definitely the toughest answer, I thought. But you got what I thought were the next two toughest answers: Kazmir and Youmans.
Johnson was also the first former Met to strike out 200 batters in a season for another team.

Re: Quiz, anybody?
Johnson was traded, with Amos Otis, to KC for Joe Foy.
I've successfully blocked that trade out of my mind for many years.
Now it is back in there.
Thanks a lot.
