As gorgeous as his hair is, Sean Manaea will not be the first Samoan-American to ply his trade for the Mets. Hawaiian Benny Agbayani was partiatlly of Samoan heritage as was fellow outfielder Chris Aguila, born in California. Outfielder Matt Tuiasosopo, from a big-time Samoan-American football family, played for the Mets in AAA Buffalo in 2012, but never got the call to the big leagues.

One-through-five, the rotation looks like Senga → Quintana → Sean Manaea → Adrian Houser → Peterson → Severino. The Cooper Hummels of the world — this one being a guy who catches and plays all corner infield and corner outfield positions while switch-hitting — are terrific pieces to have on any team. He's less useful in our terrible era of the universal designated hitter, but he stretches a bench in multiple directions, so let's root for him to clear waivers.

Max Kranick likely won't end up in Brooklyn at all — he's clearly at a higher level at this point in his career — but the crowd on the roster and the organization is such that, at this point in time, it's pretty easy to identify 25 guys ahead of him. His relative disadvantage hasn't come from poor performance, though, but time lost due to injury — the most relevant being his 2022 Tommy John surgery. So yeah, he's way back in the line, but if healthy and recovered , he can potentially come fast.

In the meantime, it'll be fun to have a Max Cranick and a Yacksel Rios warming up in the pen side by side.

Diego Castillo was always a bad fit on the roster, giving the team three veteran utility infielders without options to carry. If all three indeed made the opening day roster, one of them would be starting at second or third. It would be lovely if one of them emerged as such, but you'd hate to be forced into that position. Shedding him for now restores the Vientos-vs.-Baty showdown, and hey, maybe Castillo slips through waivers and lives to Met another day.

A lot of relievers (both on and off the 40) sit ahead of Danny Young, but among lefthanders, only Brooks Raley (the Mets second-best relief option at the moment) and Nathan Lavender (hoping to break camp with Syracuse) sit ahead of him. So he's another guy far back in the line who could come fast.

This actually is a pretty good day from our perspective. Cooper Hummel is listed above as an outfielder, because he appeared more in the outfield than behind the plate last year, but a big part — perhaps a main part — of what he was doing in the Mets fold was as an offense-first member of the catching depth chart. The Mets had to DFA him, and they could just shrug if he gets lost on waivers, but no, they get proactive, flip him to the Giants for fungible cash, while simultaneously signing a catcher with a lefty bat, an even better offensive profile, and more full-time experience behind the plate, but on a minor league contract, so they don't have to burn a roster spot on him.

It's like the slipped Hummel through waivers and got trade compensation for him. Sweet all around.

L.E. Lazer, you may recall, was acquired with Jeff Brigham as a depth move last winter from the Marlins for further-away prospect Franklin Sanchez and a further-away-prospect-to-be-named-later who turne out to be Jake Mangum.

They didn't get much depth, getting 37 innings of clearly sub-avergage work from Brigham, while L.E. spent most of the year hurt or re-habbing, never appearing with the big squad.

Franklin Sanchez didn't do anything to make the Mets regret the move, but Mangum (who was the player in the Mets system who sounded most like an old-timey private eye) did all right.

When all is said and done at the end of this off-season, one place the Mets might look good in is the "Major Subtractions" column. That's clearly due in part to most of their major subtractions having occured at the traded deadline in July, but if you squint past that, you can see among their top offseason losses Carlos Carrasco, a starting pitcher who gave them 90 innings in 2023 with a balloony 6.80 ERA, you can imagine taking some comfort in that. And if that — along with sometime DH Daniel Vogelbach and utility-infielder-coming-off-a-rough-season Luis Guillorme — are your big losses, hey maybe you have more of a foundation than it might otherwise seem.

Just a perspective, not a conclusion.

Anypits, this Adam Ottavino creates a pinch in a bullpen without options, putting one of their offseason major-league-contract signees Austin Adams on the wrong side of the bubble. Austin should have a lot of time to work back into the picture before opening day, while the vagaries of spring training do their thing, but the Ottavino signing also puts the Mets over the roster limit, so Adams may be in more immediate danger than that, as the Mets will have to trim somebody as soon as Otto becomes official.

If Adams does get visited by The DFA Fairy, it should clear up some of the spring confusion we might expect between him and our recent waiver claim, catcher Austin Allen.

It's hard to know what to make of this guy. He profiles as one of the top hitters for Syracuse on opening day, but a huge chunk (71.65%) of his career value has been garnered in the Venezuelan Winter League, where he's currently playing for Leones de Caracas and looking like the 2023-2024 league MVP.

Part of his problem is he never really has racked up full, strong seasons in AAA, because when he's good, he gets called up the bigs, and he rots on the bench. Or maybe part of it is that he needs to stop playing winter ball and give his muscles a break.

It's also interesting that he's mostly an infielder playing affiliated ball stateside in the summer, but mostly an outfielder in the winter leagues. Weird. Not unprecedented, but weird.

He could be in the heart of Syracuse's order on opening day. He could sneak onto the Mets roster in a key injury situation. He very well could be back in the Mexican League by June. Hard to say, but a Venezuelan Winter League MVP ain't nothing.
