Where's Gary Carter? With photographers all over the field, capturing the Mets celebration and taking pictures of everything, Carter was probably running around everywhere, trying to horn in on every single picture to be taken. Guess he couldn't keep up with the photogs. I think that in this particular shot, Carter was running towards this scene and from about 20 feet away, yelled as loud as he could "Hold that shot. Wait until I get there. I'm the last piece to the puzzle! So hold that shot! How can you take a picture without the last piece to the puzzle? I'm the greatest Met ever!"

Yes. Also, World's Fair patch + no number on front of Mets jersey = 1964. Casey's probably bragging to Mick and Yogi about his shiny brand new baseball digs.Benjamin Grimm wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 2:52 pmI would guess that it was the Mayor's Trophy Game in 1964. It was the only year (in the 1960s anyway) that Berra was with the Yankees and the Mets were at Shea.
Re: Classic NY Mets pictures
Could have been at the 1964 All Star game that was played at Shea that year. Yogi was a 1962 Met, but may have been asked back as some sort of honorary AL coach, which would explain his MFY uni. But as I type this, I'm more and more thinking you're probably right.Benjamin Grimm wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 2:52 pm I would guess that it was the Mayor's Trophy Game in 1964. Yogi was still a Yankee in 1962. His first association with the Mets came in 1965 when he was briefly a player but also became part of the coaching staff.
Re: Classic NY Mets pictures
But you said from the unis this was 1964, so it could have been at the all star game.Benjamin Grimm wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 3:58 pm Yogi was still a Yankee in 1962. His first association with the Mets came in 1965 when he was briefly a player but also became part of the coaching staff.

It doesn't look like an All-Star Game. Very empty. No bunting. And the pitcher on the mound is wearing a Mets uniform.

Re: Classic NY Mets pictures
Yogi could have represented the Yankees as the ASG skipper, but that’s not how replacement managers were done as he replaced Ralph Houk as manager of the defending AL Champs that season. Al Lopez filled the role and brought in a member of his staff, Tony Cuccinello, and interestingly the Washington Senators’ skipper, Gil Hodges.
So either it’s from the Mayor’s Trophy Game, or Yogi is at the ASG in an unofficial or “special guest” capacity, hence being in his Yankee road uniform.

Whaddya mean by "hence Yogi's road Yankee uni?" What other uniform would Yogi be wearing other than his Yankee uni, no matter what game was being played? A Cleveland Spiders uniform, perhaps? The Syracuse Nats? What?stevejrogers wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 8:45 pm

As opposed to the MFY Pinstripes as MFY invitees would do at Shea Old Timers Day.batmagadanleadoff wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 9:32 pmWhat other uniform would Yogi be wearing other than his Yankee uni, no matter what game was being played? Re: Classic NY Mets pictures
The theme of the Mets 1964 old-timers game was the 25th anniversary of the 1939 All-Star Game. Invitees were the 1939 all-stars. The Mets went with an all-star game theme for their '64 OTG, in line with their own hosting of that year's MLB all-star game. Like the 1964 ASG, the 1939 ASG was also held in NYC, at Yankee Stadium. And '39 was a clever choice to honor insofar as "right across the street from Shea", so to speak, NYC was hosting the World's Fair, just the same as NYC hosted the World's Fair 25 years earlier in '39.stevejrogers wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 9:40 pmAs opposed to the MFY Pinstripes as MFY invitees would do at Shea Old Timers Day.batmagadanleadoff wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 9:32 pmWhat other uniform would Yogi be wearing other than his Yankee uni, no matter what game was being played? Anyways, Yogi wasn't invited to the Mets OTG in '64 and wouldn't have been invited no matter what the '64 OTG theme was -- since he was actively managing the Yankees who had a game to play that same day. Bill Dickey, though, was invited.
