NY Mets Twitter Takes
Re: NY Mets Twitter Takes
IIRC, the PTBNL was implemented for two reasons:
1) If the player you received played well, you gave up a better player, and vice versa.
2) You couldn't trade a player while they were on the DL (now IL), so the name was released when the player returned from injury.
But the true "loan" idea is interesting, sneaky enough that if this was football, Bill Belichick would ty it.
The Chiti deal was a curiosity at the time and will forever be the answer to a trivia question.

Re: NY Mets Twitter Takes
All this talk is reminding me of being in Boston the day David Cone was traded to Toronto for Jeff Kent and a PTBNL.
Ryan Thompson wasn’t selected until after the rosters expanded on September first, so the host on WEEI was speculating as who the Jays were sending the Mets way.
One suggestion, by the host himself not a caller, was that Cone could be sent back to New York after the Blue Jays finished their season!
Never mind the Jays wound up being World Champions that October, so talk about playing a long game to complete a transaction! But that was ignorantly not realizing Cone was a free agent to be heading into the 1993 season! Hence why the Mets moved him to a contender in a quintessential rental deal!
The Mets were clearly not going to be in the Cone sweepstakes that offseason, so better get some MLB ready talent for him, but the point was more that even if the rules allowed for it, or a loophole was big enough to do it. There really wasn’t any point to make Cone the PTBNL if he was going to hit the free agent market anyway.

Chiti was traded to the Mets and then a few months later, sent back to where he came from -- the Indians. End of transaction.

My duh, thanks.
bbrdotcom:
April 26, 1962: Purchased by the New York Mets from the Cleveland Indians.
June 15, 1962: Returned to the Cleveland Indians by the New York Mets following previous purchase.
Never played for Cleveland in either instance unless my eyes are
playing tricks on me.

Immaculate Grid tip: Don't answer Harry Chiti for an Indians/!Mets box. Chiti never appeared in a game for the Indians.batmagadanleadoff wrote: ↑Sat Jul 29, 2023 12:06 pmhttps://thisdayinbaseball.com/harry-chi ... r-himself/kcmets wrote: ↑Sat Jul 29, 2023 11:50 amYes, of course.Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: ↑Sat Jul 29, 2023 11:41 am Didn't it go the other way around,? So I looked this up. Mets purchase Chili from Cleveland in April for $25K. They send him to Jacksonville (a Cleveland farm club) in June when they add Gene Woodling.
Stan Issacs writes about it months later. No PTBNL till then that I saw

On a team bound for nowhere
I met up with Stevie Cohen
We were both too tired to sleep
So we took turns a-starin'
Out the window at the darkness
The boredom overtook us
And he began to speak
He said, "Billly, I've made a life
Out of readin' people's faces
Knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind my sayin'
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice"
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done
Re: NY Mets Twitter Takes

Re: NY Mets Twitter Takes
LOL! I think you mean what Tiger fans felt back on August 31st of 2017 was akin to the Mets on 6/15/1977
Traded by the Detroit Tigers with a player to be named later and cash to the Houston Astros for Franklin Pérez (minors), Daz Cameron and Jake Rogers. The Detroit Tigers sent Juan Ramirez (minors) (October 13, 2017) to the Houston Astros to complete the trade.
But sure, trade a guy who pitched for three months to the guy literally named The Franchise.
And compare a course correction to a mess brought on by an insane ownership situation and baseball incompetence.

I have no idea why anyone would read these tweets and even less why they'd repeat them ... but that seems to be the way the world works these days and I'm old and out of it.

There was an entire Seinfeld episode on the subjects. You know, back in the 90's when you could make a joke.kcmets wrote: ↑Sat Jul 29, 2023 11:50 amYes, of course.Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: ↑Sat Jul 29, 2023 11:41 am Didn't it go the other way around,? Mets--Tribe--mets

Tell me about it. One guy here thinks F Troop should be banned. Ohmygod! Think of the children! But he doesn't find Trump offensive. Go figure. Anyways, here's a giant-sized Indians card, channeling that Seinfeld episode. There are about 10 of these cards in the series.nymr83 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 01, 2023 10:13 pmThere was an entire Seinfeld episode on the subjects. Here's some trivia, Indian Giver was a Ramones song that never
appeared on an album except the pictured greatest hits album...

Re: NY Mets Twitter Takes
Ooh, that Elizabeth Warren one was cold.
The Mets traded for 4 shortstops, but at a young age the best players are shortstops. Hell, Jacob deGrom was a shortstop. Eventually they grow into their bodies and become third basemen or second basemen or outfielders. Not really too concerned about a 17-or 18-year-old's position; I'm concerned whether they can hit and are reasonably athletic.
This is NOTHING like 1977. The Seaver trade ripped my heart out. The Scherzer trade was, "Wow, cool, we got Ronald Acuna's little brother".

Even duct tape can't fix stupid. But it can sure muffle the sound.
