Is Wilmer good enough? Iconic enough? Because if he is, then I'm going with Johneshwy.

Clearly not as good, but good enough to keep you from exclusive claims on the name.

Coincidentally this afternoon my hubby and I went shopping at a little town nearby where there’s a bunch of Amish stores and we stopped for lunch at the ‘Twilite Diner’
They had a very old baseball game on and Pedro was pitching! For the Expos.

Is that the one just off I-80, exit 185? I stop there sometimes when I'm driving between Cleveland and the NYC area.whippoorwill wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2024 4:21 pm

Re: One-Named Baseballers
Someone should come up with a Bill James power/speed like ranking for these names. A player would score highly for the uniqueness of his name and also, for his baseball career output. Aaron and Mays and Cobb would score very highly on their career output. Gaylord and Yogi and Boog would score highly for their names, which, in their cases are one-of-a-kinds. Mantle would be very recognizable as the Mickey of baseball, but on the other hand, his first name is not so unique.
Off the top of my head, without giving this too much thought, I'd guess that the Babe would score the highest on this metric.

Just kidding. We drove to Chicago many years ago and on the way, stopped at that diner. It was totally spontaneous and not part of the plan. Someone had to go to the bathroom and couldn't hold it in any longer and so there we ended up. But we enjoyed the place so much that we made it a point to stop there on the way back.
