“I never thought that this would be broken while I was still around,” said 86-year-old Craig Anderson, a member of those 1962 Mets. “For the Mets fans, it’s off your shoulders. Now, we’re not the worst in the world.”

I dunno. Should the White Sox win their last two games, they'd finish with a better record than the '62 Mets.

Which they did.

2024 White Sox 41-121 (.253)
1962 Mets 40-120 (.250)

But now go try and tell baseball's mouth-breathers that the '62 Mets were better.

"But the Sox lost 121 games. That's worse".

But couldn't I, just the same, say that the Sox won 41 games and that 41 wins is better than 40 wins?"

"But 121 losses is worse than 120 losses."

2024 41-121 White Sox: Most losses.
1962 40-120 Mets: Lower winning percentage.
1916 36-117 A’s: We REALLY sucked.
1935 38-115 Braves: Us too.
Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.

1962 Mets: "We were an expansion team built mostly from a draft that was kind of designed to screw expansion teams kind of bad. Plus our GM was more interested in getting famous names to sell at the box office than in building a talent base."

2024 White Sox: "We had an unprecedented amount of injuries."

1962 Mets: "Dude, everybody has injuries."

2024 White Sox: "Yeah, well, every sucky team has a GM with his head up his ass. We had, like, a lot of injuries."

1962 Mets: "Dude ... ."

2024 White Sox: "That's our story, Expansion Boy. What's the A's' excuse?"

1916 A’s: "Dude, there was a war going on."

1962 Mets: "Well, we can see that, but shouldn't ... ."

1935 Braves: "Us too! War! Screwed us up real bad."

1916 A’s: "Where?"

1935 Braves: "Italy invaded Ethiopia. 1935. Look it up."

1962 Mets: ((eyeroll))

Point of order, Mr. Speaker.....

The US didn't enter WW1 until April 6, 1917. The 1916 A's had no excuse.

I yield back my time.

So, for the sake of clarity , have the 1962 Mets been surpassed as the worst ?

No. Although the White Sox lost one more, the Mets were still worse.

It really depends on how you define worst, by most losses or by lowest winning percentage? I think at best it's ambiguous.

Right , anyway ,I don't think many people will look back on this Sox team in the same way they do with the 1962 Mets

Normally the owner would fire the manager after such an embarrassment. But the owner WAS the manager.

There are a couple of things that make it hard to compare the 62 Mets to these White Sox. The Mets were an expansion team where everybody was either too young or too old to be in their prime, playing for a fan base that was thrilled to have a National League team again. The White Sox play in an era where big market teams can always afford to be at least adequate, and somehow they had half the necessary win total to be defined as adequate. It's just not fathomable.

So a team that plays 300 games but loses 122 of them did worse than the '62 Mets?

Yeah the White Sox are the biggest stain on the game however you look at it. Between them and the A's, really embarrassing year for baseball, even with the all the Ohtani stuff.

It should come as no surprise that owner Jerry Reinsdorf (88 yrs old) is thinking of selling the team:

He's no Joan Payson who didn't let a little thing like a loss record make her think of selling.

Fewer owners like Reinsdorf is a good thing.

So long as he’s not replaced by someone worse.
