It is embarrassing.
But while it's probably not written down in a contract, I suspect that as a condition of being hired Jeter's agent made it clear that he was to be referred to as 'Captain' at some point during the broadcast. It's part if his image, it shows up in most of the TV commercials he does, and ARod is still just self-conscious enough of his secondary status to St. Derek among Yanqui fans to take it upon himself to be the one to do it.
