While Mets Roster Central are fans of Nick Madrigal (Nick's your buddy; Nick's the kind of guy you can trust, the kind of guy you can drink a beer with, the kind of guy who doesn't mind if you puke in his car, Nick!) and see him as having as good a chance as anybody to displace Ronny Mauricio from the opening-day roster and be the Candelita of 2025, right now he's part of a redundancy plan, and MRC is forced to project him at AA until things change. He's got plenty of big-league roster time, but what works against his profile is that he hasn't had a lot of playing time in the majors or minors, despite his age. His profile is a pretty good parallel to another Nick in the system — Nick Lorusso — who is three years younger.


Luis De Los Santos is the second DFA in as many days of guys acquired at the very beginning of the 2024-2025 offeseason, here at the end of said offseason. David Stearns clearly wants to purge the system of the acquistions made by whoever was running the show back then.

As Darlin Lora and Nomar Meza above have less than 12 professional innings between them, and the next professional game Yerlin Garcia appears in will be his first, this is (or appears to be, at least) about as inconsequential a transaction set as there can be but Mets Roster Central delayed their latest update by two or three days in order to include it, because we care.

As noted above, the Pete Alonso signing kind of telegraphs the Mets' intent to go with a single backup infielder. Unlike 2024, however, the 2025 edition of the Mets doesn't include a projected roster with an outfielder or two experienced in even faking it on the infield — so we're advocating for all readers to get ready for the odd appearance of Luis Torrens, emergency infielder.

Tyler Zuber has twice now dodged the DFA bogeyman, so we wouldn't bet our money on it, but he's still the Mets Roster Central pick as the guy most likely to get the bad news once the Alonso deal becomes official.

Yes, dealing with the apparent imbalance of six outfielders and five infielders appears to be (again) the major issue confronting this roster.

Number two is seemingly only having room for one lefty reliever, and number three is that they will have to cut someone else loose as soon as the Alonso deal is official.

In reverse order:
-Can’t a 40-man spot be cleared by sending Christian Scott to the 60-day IL?

-If Blackburn opens the season on the IL, as expected, doesn’t that preserve a spot for Danny Young?

-Was having only one reserve infielder a real issue last year, and will it be so again? Unlike the JD Martinez and Daniel Vogelbachs of the world, the Mets aren’t using a full time DH who can’t do anything else. And, McNeil can play three infield positions, Vientos two, and Winker can play first. So long as the one can credibly play shortstop, that seems sufficient.

I think The 60-Day Injured List usually becomes available at the official start of Spring Training. If that is so, I think that is around February 20 this season, but I've seen guys hit the List around St. Valentine's Day, so maybe the two days don't exactly line up. If so, that might lead them to delay the official-ness of the Alonso signing until they can stash Scott, but I believe the league keeps an eye on those sorts of things, so it might not be easy.

As for Danny Young — yeah, our mistake — we do still currently have room for him on the roster. The un-optionable Sean Reid-Foley, not so much.

As for one reserve infielder, it was more of a problem for Mets Roster Central than it ultimately was for the Mets, clearly.

Neither of these guys have appeared since 2023, and re-entering the picture is always tougher at the lower levels. While there have been two Rodolfos in MLB history, there have been zero Patricios and zero Trinidads, so this has to be looked at as a lost opportunity.
