I have no problem with organizational depth. I'd have a huge problem with demoting Alvarez to make room for this guy.

Well, who is catching at Syracuse while Alvarez is in New York? Might be a sign that Francisco is staying put.

He's better than all the minor league veteran catchers and the prospects except for Parada.
And even if he doesn't catch, he still adds some power.
I have no problem with the signing.

Nido is out of options. Once Navaez returns, there's a chance he'll be lost. His hitting is pathetic, but he's considered a good defender, so another team may snatch him up.

They'll need someone at Syracuse who can be called up if Navaez or Alvarez gets hurt. Sanchez has caught in the majors (not well, but still), so he's worth keeping just in case. None of the other AAA catchers look like they can hit (they're not hitting in the minors).

Michael Perez and Nick Meyer are sharing the catching duties at Syracuse, and both are currently on the Interstate.

Meyer: .150/.277/.175 in 13 games.
Perez: .167/.281/.278 in 18 games.

Sanchez is insurance more at RH DH than he is at catcher.

Maybe, but I would rather have him catching at AAA in case of emergency than not, so I like the move. Unless it means an eventually Alvarez demotion.

If Sanchez were to start mashing, the Mets could carry 3 catchers with the idea that Alvarez or Sanchez is the regular DH while Narvaes catches . This comes down to whether they would rather lose Nido or Vogebach at that point

I'm not saying you wouldn't put Sanchez behind the plate. But he was never more than a hitter who could (sorta) catch and now you're not even sure he can hit.

Agreed, but it's a minor league deal. He doesn't have to be better than anyone on the current roster, he has to be better than the next guy up if an injury occurs, and that seems possible

And if his offense contributions have grown more modest and dubious, it's hard to get any value out of them without him also wearing a catcher's mitt, and hopefully keeping some other duffer out of the lineup.

Robot umps have nothing on that beautiful lawn chair. Nothing.

Sanchez reportedly has opt-out clause if not called up by 5/19. Tearing it up at Syracuse.

I have my doubts about both prospects — Sanchez' promotion and Vientos' anger.

Not his fault, Maybe frustration. What else does he have to prove at AAA to be brought up?
But what about righty DH? Or righty platoon at third?
This team is starving for offense, and he might be he spark they need.
