Mets Roster Central 2024
Posted: Wed Oct 04, 2023 1:18 pm
by Edgy MD
Welcome to your first peek at the 2024 Mets — a looksee at how they kind of project on opening day, but clearly won't be at all.
A few notes.
1. Traditionally, a guy out of options gets favoritism over a guy who ain't, even if the guy who ain't has the higher profile, at least until the former guy gets shed from the roster. But it takes too much suspension of disbelief to suggest that Michael Perez is ahead of Francisco Álvarez on any depth chart in the multiverse, so we'll save time on that. With bullpen backenders, though, the guys out of options, for now, get a bump over guys with a modestly higher profile.
2. The profile is calculated based on a proprietary formula measuring their performance to date.
3. Peyton Battenfield, calculations show, has the higher profile over Tylor Megill. Obviously, the Mets depth chart since Batty joined the organization has not reflected that. But with a new president and new manager, the choice between the two may revert to what the data says. So we're giving the edge to Peyton until (a) he's removed from the roster, or (b) somebody new joins the team that bumps him, and would have bumped Megill. Either way, it's likely the most temporary of assignments.
4. The Mets have a very small free agency group this year. And Ottavino could exit it at any time by triggering his player option — something we believed was extremely unlikely until this past week.
5. The team is over their roster limit due to 60-Man Injured List assignments. That's gonna be an ugly crunch when the off-season officially begins and there is no Injured List.
6. All injured folk are assumped to be healthy on April 1 until otherwise noted. For now, the only guy explicitly reported as being unlikely to be ready to open the season is Bryce Montes de Oca. Quit chasing that velocity, kids. It'll lead you to a dark place.

After I read your rules for inclusion in the intro, I didn't read the actual roster. I fact, I covered my eyes lest I accidentally see it before lunch.
But I promise to follow changes avidly as updates occur.
A CPF tradition continues.
Thanks

Shorthand: It's a perfectly defensible squad that looks a lot like the 24–31 team they've had the last two months, plus Edwin Diaz.
But we can be sure they have greater ambitions.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, LHP Anthony Kay, RHP Vinny Nittoli, C Michael Perez, OF Rafael Ortega, INF Jonathan Arauz and INF Danny Mendick were all waived from the 40-man roster.

Trautman: Company leader to identify Scrum Team - Rambo, Kay, Nittoli, Perez, Ortega, Arauz, Mendick confirm! This is Colonel Trautman. Talk to me, Johnny.
Rambo: They're all gone Sir.
Trautman: Rambo! Are you all right?
Rambo: The players. They're all gone, sir.
Trautman: Not Kay, he made it.
Rambo: Key is gone too, sir.
Trautman: How?
Rambo: Got himself traded for Stroman, didn't even know it. He came back but the batters ate him down to the bone.
Trautman: I'm sorry, I didn't know.
Rambo: I'm the last one Sir.

Ortega, at least, might be worth bringing back on a minor league deal.

It may not be necessary, as yesterday, all but Kay cleared waivers and were assigned to Syracuse.
Some or most will have the option to decline that assignment and become free agents, but none have yet.

Clearing this much roster space is pretty nice. The only guy the team has lost from this purging so far is Anthony Kay, but I imagine there'll be a handful of new free agents by the end of the day.

The Mets have had bad luck with designated-speed guys. Some haven't worked out, some have gotten hurt, and some of them have failed
and gotten hurt. It's good to see there's room for a second shot with Locastro, at least for the time being.

Ryley Gilliam, the club's 5th round pick in 2018, has been released. Also Nittoli, Mendick, Ortega, Arauz and Perez elected free agency.

Gilliam's had it rough. He's missed the last two seasons, plus a good chunk of 2021, and of course 2020 was canceled.

What has Battenfield done to earn a spot in the rotation over Megill or even Butto?

He hasn't, as discussed above. It's just a projection, but he's put up a modestly stronger profile to this point, depending on how one measures such things. Things will change as the offseason progresses.
Please feel free to root for somebody else in there.

Since my kid Vasil won't be ready to step into the rotation from Spring Training, I will cast my troth with Butto.

The October purge was necessary to bring the Mets roster down to 40 before the 60-Day Injured List period ended. It currently sits at 39.
Some (Elieser Hernandez? Daniel Vogelbach??) still might get bumped at the November 17 non-tender deadline.

Some actual contributors here. Danny Mendick's bat and Jonathan Araúz' glove might have actually added up to a decent use of a roster spot between them, but neither was going to approach Luis Guillorme's value on his own. Rafael Ortega's value was largely eclipsed by the late-season explosion of DJ Stewart, and then he faded as Tim Locastro returned and he didn't have much of a role anymore.

All opted to explore the market, which is par for the course, but some might re-sign. It certainly seems like somebody in the Mets brass digs Michael Peréz.

Vinny is an East Coast guy, but he quickly calculated that sticking in the bigs as a reliever is more likely with a team that went 50-112 last season.

Gilly was a star ACC reliever and a fifth-round pick in 2018 who quickly transitioned in the lower minors. But bad luck has eaten up most of his last four seasons. At 5'10", he was gonna have to fight to get noticed, and that's hard to do when you can't get back on the mound.

Kolby Kubichek had been around since 2018, and had pitched at three levels this year, but along with Anthony Kay, he's been caught up in the Mets purging of K's from their AAA roster.
Nick Meyer is a good enough for AAA catcher who is probably no worse than Michael Peréz or even Tomás Nido, but has never been in the right place at the right time.

More releases:
Herlyn Pena and Gerald Mejia—in their system since 2021, but never advanced beyond rookie ball. Roger Cortez—joined their system in 2023 and was released after a year in rookie ball. Elliot Johnstone—New Zealand-born pitcher played in the Australian league for a few years before joining the Mets system this year. He played for their Single-A team. Pedro Mercedes—pitcher had a 1.86 ERA in 8 relief appearances at rookie ball this year, his first pro campaign, but was let go anyway. Ramon Henriquez—2023 was his first pro campaign and he was already 24, so despite his success (2.96 ERA at Single-A), he was let go.

Thanks, we've been tracking some minor league releaserinos too — some of which are on that list of yours and some ain't — and we'll be posting that list later.
Henriquez isn't the only guy released after a solid season. I'm imagining that some older guys see leaving affiliated ball after a good season and catching on with the Mexican League or the like as the faster way to get some coin.

More today:(from Metsmerized.com)
The New York Mets made more roster moves on Thursday when they placed six players on outright waivers to continue their 40-man roster reconfiguration. Right-handed pitchers Peyton Battenfield, John Curtiss, Elieser Hernández, Bryce Montes de Oca, and Denyi Reyes, and outfielder Tim Locastro are on waivers. Curtiss, Hernández, Reyes, and Locastro can all elect free agency if they clear waivers.

The Mets recently released Adrian Hernandez, who'd been in their system since 2018, though he peaked at High-A and had a career .216 average. They also released Manuel Guance, who'd been in their system since 2021, but hit for a low average and never played above rookie ball. Luis Castillo, a different one, was shown the door recently; he'd been in their organization since 2019, but hit just .196 ... he also had a .358 OBP, which is impressive considering the low BA. Dyron Campos was shown the door after playing in their system since 2019. He showed promise early on, but ended up peaking at High-A. Fernando Villalobos was given the boot ... he hit just .146 in four seasons in their system, including .110 in 118 ABs this year.

Mets claim utility player Zach Short from Detroit to fill the spot opened when Ottavino declined his option.
Bryce Montes de Oca (who’s recovering from Tommy John) and Peyton Battenfield both cleared waivers and were sent to Triple-A.

From Metsmerized.com:
the Mets protected only Alex Ramírez from the Rule 5 draft by placing him on the 40-man roster. That leaves Justin Jarvis, Coleman Crow, Joander Suarez and others listed below to get picked to an MLB roster in the December 6 draft.

In his second season, Herlyn Peña's strikeouts dropped and his walks spiked, and that's not a formula for success. He had missed all of 2022 with surgery and the Mets weren't looking to be patient.

Gerry Mejia had good speed, fantastic walk rates, and the ability to hit to all fields, but he kept getting hurt and put up low batting averages when healthy.

Cesar Berbesi and Chase Estep were near the top of the Mets system, and weren't quite out of time. But we guess they were in somebody's way.
We have such a blurry picture of Jonaiker Palacios because the best we could find was a video capture of him pitching on a rainy day. But he got the save and accentuated it with a Jenrry Mejia stomp, so there's that. It's hard to say why the photo of Ramón Henriquez is so crappy.
Pedro Mercedes, Manuel Guance, and Eric Santana all failed the test of sustaining their professional careers long enough to leave behind photographic evidence that said careers happened at all. Santana hit .172, .151, and .143 over parts of three seasons, so you might say the statistical evidence was pretty scant also.

Well, you may weep for this further batch of minor league releaserinos, but save your biggest tears for Greco-Canadian prospect Mathieu Voros, who somehow played out his career with no photos and no appearances. I hope the bonus translated well into Canadian dollars, but even if it didn't, he can always frame the check.
Frelianderson Seijas, similarly, had hoped for lasting fame as the Met with the longest name, but he walked 17 in 22 innings this season, and now that name is just another pain in the ass when he needs to fill out forms.

Among another merciless and bloody round of minor league exiles is some action with immediate MLB consequences as Tim Locastro cleared waivers and declared for the free-agent market. The Mets have had mostly bad luck in their efforts to keep one designated superspeed guy around each season in recent years, with most such figures running into injuries, limited roles, and or limited success, but Locastro played hard and decent before and after his long absence due to injury, absorbed some hit-by-pitches, and was a perfect six-for-six in steals. His departure leaves the Mets with only four MLB outfielders — and that's really three and a half when you count the always-roving Jeff McNeil — so we're forced for now to shoehorn Mark Vientos into the back end of the team's outfield picture. That's a picture that could change soon, but that's where we are.
Newly arrived Zach Short, in that scenario becomes the team's extra sixth infielder.

Nothing against the Buttman, but this is straight-up subtraction. There may or may not be that much difference between the two of them, but the rotation is thin enough that they kind of need both. Get back soon, DP.

The Mets booth didn't let up this season on reminding us that Joey Cora was "the best in the biz" even though both his aggressiveness and success rate seemed down this season (to our eyeballs, anyhow). Reid Brignac is the manager of the Binghamton squad, but he has a
Playboy playmate for a wife, so he clearly has ambitions to follow that MLB playing career with some big-time dugout work.

We're not scouts, but based on careers in review, we had Murfee ranked number four in the Mets bullpen, so we're as chagrined as any to see him lost on waivers. If the Mets felt compelled to waive somebody, we'd have suggested Coonrod, who has cleared waivers before, and here is added to the projected staff (over Jeff Brigham, Josh Walker, and Grant Hartwig) mainly because he is the one out of options. Someone in the front office likes him, or so it seems.
