We have a new manager, what do we know about him?

Not the Carlos Mendoza who played for the 1997 Mets.

I realize that having a president of baseball operations makes having a general manager something less than it's usual necessary element in day-to-day operations, but it still feels kind of freaky to hire a manager while the gm chair is still vacant.

Yankee coach for last several years, been getting manager interviews for last two years.

I'm personally glad we didn;t hire Counsell who's such a wisconnsin guy he'd only be here for the $$

Personally I think we'd be just as well off with Buck.

From the same place we got Showalter (after a few stops)and Randolph.
Because of that winning tradition I guess.

Counsell to the Cubs.

So did the Mets choose Mendoza over Counsell or did Counsell tell them 'No thanks' first and Mendoza was the first alternate?

My guess is the latter over the former even if no one will ever say so publicly.

I guess Counsell needed to stay in proximity to Lake Michigan.

I'm looking forward to hearing what the Mets say impressed them about Mendoza, even though it will probably be the usual platitudes.

I really have no opinion on this, so I won't pretend to be happy or disappointed or angry or anything like that. All I can say is that I hope he succeeds.

Counsell lives full time in Wisconsin so not leaving the area makes sense.

It’s odd that Counsell and Mendoza would be the two finalists given their very different resumes. Mendoza has a similar resume/experience to Luis Rojas.

We don't have an official announcement on the Mendoza hiring yet that I've seen.

If the reports are true, he'd join Ozzie Guillen, Al Pedrique, and the late Chico Carrasquel (among others) in the growing fraternity of Venezuelan MLB managers.

Official, no. But Anthony DiComo of MLB.com is reporting it as is Will Sammon of the Athletic. It’s a done deal.

Seems like he was well liked within the Yankme organization. Speaks Spanish, so there's that.

Sounds like Steans wants a manager he can control, especially since they haven't hired a GM yet. Hope he keeps Cora as the third base coach. The rest can go, Hefner included.

Awful funny way to spell "Beltran," if you ask me.
