Ten Mets on the Ballot (Hall of Fame 2024)

Post by G-Fafif » Mon Nov 20, 2023 12:36 pm

The BBWAA ballot has been released for the Hall of Fame class of 2024. It includes five Mets under consideration for the first time — David Wright, Jose Reyes, Bartolo Colon, Jose Bautista and Adrian Gonzalez — and five Met holdovers — Carlos Beltran, Bobby Abreu, Billy Wagner, Gary Sheffield and Francisco Rodriguez.

Also some non-Mets.
Hope for the best. Expect the Mets.

Manny Ramirez, ratted out by A-Rod, and dragged off to the Hall of Ignominy with him.

Not only is Manny a Homie, but my good friend (who passed away a few years ago) used to umpire Manny's games at George Washington High School in Washington Heights.
I don't care what that arsehole said, Manny would get my sentimental vote.
AssRod should have to drink his own bile.

Please don't allow me to give the inference that A-Rod's testimony is the sum total of the evidence against Ramirez.

Of course it isn't.
But it gave me a chance to note my support for Manny as well as take a shot at A-Rod.

This is a good list!! I think Sheffield gets lumped in with the steroid guys and won't get there. I would vote for Wright and want to see him on the ballot for a bit so he gets a solid look. But I agree that the injuries regrettably took their toll too soon. But get him in the Mets Hall of Fame and put No. 5 on the wall.

It would be a shame if the Houston thing keeps Beltran out for a bit longer.

There are excellent choices here. None of them deserve to be judged by the likes of us

I'm a little like the tough "Rusian judges" when it comes to Hall of Fame voting. I believe there are far too many enshrined that were good, but far from the greats of the game or their era. It is with that kind of mindset, I would vote for the following:

Adrian Beltre
Carlos Beltran
Todd Helton
Joe Mauer

I'm on the fence for Billy Wagner.

If only Wright could have had a few more injury free years. Put that man in the Mets Hall of Fame.
When did the choices get so hard
With so much more at stake
Life gets mighty precious
When there's less of it to waste

Todd Zeile had better career numbers than Wright.

I'm not sure that ballot's going to help him win the J.G. Taylor Spink Award.

And it won't get him many smiles from friends of Reuben Tejada.

I'm a "big Hall" kind of guy, so of the candidates with Mets experience I could actively support or could see Hall of Fame cases for the bolded names:

David Wright, Jose Reyes, Bartolo Colon, Jose Bautista and Adrian Gonzalez — and five Met holdovers — Carlos Beltran, Bobby Abreu, Billy Wagner, Gary Sheffield and Francisco Rodriguez.

I actively support Abreu, Beltran, Wagner, Sheffield and Rodriguez. I don't actively support Wright, yet, but could in the future; that doesn't mean I think he'd hurt the Hall too much if he was elected, I just don't actively push his induction yet. Bautista could feasibly have a peak case, but I don't actively support him and would be hard-pressed to support him. Colon was good, but he was good like Dennis Martinez or Jamie Moyer were good, in that they pitched forever and put together good compiler stats because of it. Adrian Gonzalez and Jose Reyes I'd say had Hall of Fame potential, but faltered too early to make it.

3 or 4 more David Wright-ish years and he would have had a puncher's chance of getting in. But alas. Hope he at least gets the 5% to hang around another year.

I think that would be a surprise if he gets to that 5%
