Righthanded hitter. Pretty much a DH at this point in his career. Has been mostly pretty good after 30, so maybe growing into old-guy skills has suited him. Slugs 30 homers with a lot of doubles thrown in. Strikes out 150 times, and while he could walk more, but he could also walk less. He supposedly is somebody the Mets have been taking a look at. He may or may not be Jason Bay but you've got to love his saucy presence on the bases.
Could nicely fill up the scratchy-beard void left by the departure of Justin Verlander.

I wouldn't object to this (not that I have the power to do so) but I'd prefer Jorge Soler or Teoscar Hernandez because Martinez is almost exclusively a DH.
Still, they can use the bat, and if Martinez is the one that they get, they'll be better for it.

I saw some Martinez OR Turner articles asking which one the reader would prefer.
I really don't see them as a tradeoff.
The team needs a third baseman and a righty DH and Turner would fill both holes. But what about when Turner would be playing third? Who would be the DH?
So I say sign Turner and go after Martinez, too.
They are both short term solutions until the kids are ready to be productive. Soler or Teoscar would have to be (IMO) longer term deals.

How does a team that spends so much money have so many holes?

Perfect, 1-year (Shea) bridge guy. Go for it.

Worth a short term deal. He could be a great improvement over Vogelbach as the Mets primary DH in every way other than OBP.

Are we discussing Rhys Hoskins? I like him as a fuck you to the Phillies but he's not a bad hitter

That would be interesting. He was rumored to be close to signing with the Cubbieholes, but that was seemingly three weeks ago.
There's been some bad blood between him and the Mets.

Years and years of shitty player development.

I like him too. Kind of an asshole from what I remember. But good hitter.

Martinez can still hit, and if he has to DH full time so what, it's a position of need. MLBTradeRumors projected 2 and 40. $20M per seems like a lot for an aging full-time DH, but if I could get him for closer to $30M over two years I'm interested.

There's a tradeoff that's part of the equation. Teams with DHs who can't play the field tend to more frequently end up using backup infielders in the outfield. Or perhaps, like the Mets, they use a starting infielder like Jeff McNeil in the outfield, and end up giving more time than might be ideal to Zack Short and Joey Wendle in the infield.
It may certainly be a worthwhile tradeoff, but it's a factor.
The other part of the tradeoff is that if there's a big series and Starling Marte or somebody is nursing a tight quad or sore hip flexor, but is hitting and needed, you can't as easily use the DH position to keep him in the lineup.

Andy Martino, however, says that of course the Mets are talking to him, they're talking to everybody who's still available, but he's pretty certain that JD Martinez is not going to be a Met this year.

Interesting. J.D. Martinez has a camp.
I've accepted that, at this point in my life, I will likely never be a big-league ballplayer. But is it too much to ask that I get to have a camp?

Will he cover spring training in a Speedo if the Mets sign Martinez?

If the Mets sign Martinez, I might be happy enough to do that myself.

The Mets took a lunch order from Martinez
No to Martino in a Speedo in any circumstance
Yes to JD Martinez as a Met DH although there are redundancies here
Don't see a signing happening personally

JD is still unemployed and Vientos is not wowing folks, so JD Martinez is a Topic of Discussion again.
I haven't been watching, but I had the impression that Vientos was doing well this spring. Am I wrong?

He's 6-for-32. He has two homers and a double in there, so it's not a washout or anything, and it's the sort of thing that could still rebound in one game, but a .638 OPS is where we're at.

I like that they've waited JD out. I think they get him cheaper now than they would have in the dark days of winter
