Mets grab a new Max for the roster, pitcher Max Kranick from the Pirates, off waivers.

And after that?
It would be a refreshing change if they signed a pitcher with a career ERA lower than a mid-west area code.

I think you may want to re-think that area code thing. I live in the
914 and 845 area code and it's not exactly mid west here. I have
friends in No Mass that are 978. Parts of Joisey are 908.

So what? If the ERA is lower than a midwest area code, it'll likely also be lower than 914 or 845.

They didn't sign him, but grabbed him off waivers. And waiver wires tend to be populated by players who haven't particularly been prospering at the big league level.

Maybe Stearns is one of those guys who thinks he can get gold
out of pyrite or something like that.

That was his reputation in Milwaukee, wasn't it?
Kranick only pitched 20 innings in 2023, all in the minor leagues. So who knows what he's going to have in 2024?
"Midwest Area Code" is a strange goal. Kansas City has an area code of 913. Would we be happy with a 9.12 ERA?

Not a goal. It was my (obviously bad) attempt at a humorous number.

Or, in this case, out of a Pirate.
