Do you agree with their reasons, or can you think of other reason(s)?

As article says there are only 6% African American players in the league, I can amen two Cutch in Pittsburgh and Dom Smith , Dom probably could have been a catcher, no idea what the answer is , but are African American kids playing baseball in big numbers? Likely not I would think

I'm not sure if anybody can do more than speculate on why there are so few catchers in particular until MLB fixes this bigger and more general problem.

I'm not sure that's for MLB to fix. If we indeed identify it as a problem, then it's on all of us. To me, most problems with baseball is that we leave so much of it to be the province of MLB and their self-serving governance.
But yeah, if two guys out of 26 on MLB rosters are catchers, and six percent of MLB players are African-American, then the number of African-American catcher is, by definition going to be small. The average amount of African-American catchers expected in the league under such circumstances is 3.6.
Concerning ourselves with whether the actual amount is one or two or five or six seems to be missing the forest for the trees.
