That's it, Wagner and Sheffield miss out

I'm disappointed for Wagner, I'm sure he'll get in next year

I hope so.

This topic deserves a split.

Good to see Wright live to fight another year. Too many good careers (better than his, frankly) have failed to reach that threshold.

Reyes, on the other hand, got Hubie'd — one of only two Hubies on the ballot.

Adrian Beltré: 366 votes, 95.1%
Todd Helton: 307 votes, 79.7%
Joe Mauer: 293 votes, 76.1%
--------------------------------
Billy Wagner: 284 votes, 73.8%
Gary Sheffield: 246 votes, 63.9%
Andruw Jones: 237 votes, 61.6%
Carlos Beltrán: 220 votes, 57.1%
Alex Rodriguez: 134 votes, 34.8%
Manny Ramirez: 125 votes, 32.5%
Chase Utley: 111 votes, 28.8%
Omar Vizquel: 68 votes, 17.7%
Bobby Abreu: 57 votes, 14.8%
Jimmy Rollins: 57 votes, 14.8%
Andy Pettitte: 52 votes, 13.5%
Mark Buehrle: 32 votes, 8.3%
Francisco Rodriguez: 30 votes, 7.8%
Torii Hunter: 28 votes, 7.3%
David Wright: 24 votes, 6.2%

*****************************

José Bautista: 6 votes, 1.6%
Victor Martinez: 6 votes, 1.6%
Bartolo Colon: 5 votes, 1.3%
Matt Holliday: 4 votes, 1%
Adrián González: 3 votes, 0.8%
Brandon Phillips: 1 vote, 0.3%
Jose Reyes: 0 votes, 0%
James Shields: 0 votes, 0%

Seems like a mostly solid outcome. I'm not buying that Andruw Jones was better than Carlos Beltrán, but I'll attribute the vote discrepancy to the trashcan-banging thingie.

My predictions were all wrong:
I had Beltran instead of Beltre, Hank Bauer instead of Joe Mauer, and Bill Melton rather than Todd Helton.

That was just poor preperation on my part.

Am I reading this correctly:

Both David Wright (24) and Chase Utley (111) were in their first years of eligibility and that scumbag got 5X as many votes as the Captain?

Jose Reyes got exactly the number of votes he deserved.

Glad that Wright gets to stick around another year. I don't think he is a hall of famer but I like talking about him!

Beltran was a better player than Andruw Jones, but the trash cans are always going to be a factor. You know else were better players (who played center field) Jim Edmonds and Kenny Lofton. Neither got in.

It’s a pity voters seem less concerned about players nearly killing their partners then taking PEDS or “trash can banging schemes.

Reyes wasn't getting into the HOF because he wasn't good enough at baseball, charges or not. I'd guess the charges would have been part of the discussion if Reyes had an HOF-worthy career.

If they are insufficiently concerned about domestic violence, that's hard to portray sing the Reyes case as a model, seeing whereas he received zero votes.

Omar Vizquel may be a better case study. Francisco Rodriguez too.

Vizquel is in precipitous decline. In 2020, he received 52.6% of the vote and had every reason to be hopeful the Hall was in his future. Since then he has dropped three straight years, to 49.1%, 23.9%, 19.5%, and now 17.7%. The accusations against him from both his former wife and his former batboy were certainly ugly, but both matters were settled out of court. I think that leaves voters in a gray area in which to exercise their own judgment, but clearly most have judged the accusations to me substantiated enough.

I'm usually not a fan of the argument that goes "X clearly isn't a Hall of Famer, but I would have liked to see him get more votes."

That being said, Bartolo Colon clearly isn't a Hall of Famer, but I would have liked to see him get more votes.
