What's in Store for Twenty-Four?: Adam Ottavino

I was third-ranked in the Mets bullpen last year. Or maybe fourth. Whatever it was, by the end of the season, With Díaz dówn and Robertson Marlined, it was me saving games — or trying to — in the ninth inning. And that suggests I was mostly getting the job done.

But I couldn't hold a guy on base with a railroad spike.

So it was a soft market this offseason, and that's generally not the best of news for a bullpen setup guy who can fake it as a closer for a few weeks but can't hold people on and turned 38 back in November. But I appeared in over 60 games each of the last six full seasons and in 24 in the fake season of 2020. So as January was turning into February and the Mets had spent the offseason hunting the margins for the next Ottavino, a little inspiration made them think, "Maybe we can squeeze one more year out of the original model."

So here I am, native New Yorker back for another go. And yeah, new rules are in place to encourage base-stealing, so I've had to put my work in to try to catch up, and I still may not be able to slow them down, but I've got a zero on my back which suggests a sense of humor, and now in my third season as a Met, I intend to leave my mark on this team.

And you are here to tell me what that mark will look like in 2024. That's YOUR job.

I'm in the game, now, without any clue as to what's in store for me. How disappointing.

You are what you are and what you will be.

3-3, 3 saves 3.33 ERA, unreliable all the same

2-4 W-L, 64 G, 4 SV, 3.50 ERA, will melt down a few times to give us a negative impression, but looking back will seem better than we remember.
