He apparently had been sent home sick by Mendoza.

I'm also curious if Lindor's slide resulted in any damage.

I was watching this on delay and just now saw the ending. It was exhilarating! And that triumphant roar from Vientos is one I'll remember for a long time!

Did Vientos just "Wally Pipp" him or will he return to the minors when Marte returns?

Something is going to have to give, but it's unlikely to simply be Vientos for Wendle. The team had already been shorthanded, playing with a single backup infielder before Vientos arrived. If they're going to go back to only five infielders, it's unlikely that the fifth will be a guy who hasn't played shortstop since he was 17, and hasn't played second at all.

It could happen, but it would sure make their versatility problem worse.

Great start from Quintana. Nice to see a starter go more than 5 innings. Great moment for Vientos. Much needed win for the team. Hopefully it will give the team some cahnfidence as they prepare to host the Cubs.

Well, as you've noted, if they let the starters go more than their current limits, they wouldn't need as many relief pitchers. And a lower number of relievers would allow them to keep both Vientos and Wendle around.
