The Waving Shutter

I should have gotten to the bottom of this months ago, and I guess I've felt stupid asking, but the Mets celebration of a base hit this season has been the batter-runner turning toward the dugout from his perch on one of the bases, extending the left arm, bending the elbow at 90 degrees to point in the air, and waving his right hand underneath.

What, besides "Hooray! I got a hit!" is this supposed to represent?

I was going to ask the same thing!

I interpret it as waving away underarm odor.

The odd part is that it's done twice, once towards the dugout and then the other seemingly towards the OF or bleachers.

I thought they were holding up the slappee by the back collar and slapping them.
