IGT Aug. 11 Mets vs Mariners, Bats Sleeping in Seattle

Game is on ESPN at 7:10 p.m.

Luis Severino, 7-5, 4.06 ERA faces Luis Castillo, 9-11, 3.48 ERA.

Stuff we have in common. Seattle used to have a professional hockey team named the Metropolitans.

With the benefit of hindsight, what do you think about the Cano-Diaz trade?

Mets got Robinson Cano and Diaz and $20 million. Mariners got Jay Bruce, relievers Anthony Swarzak and Gerson Bautista, and prospects Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn.

Dunn hasn't pitched in the majors since 2022, Swarzak since 2021, Bautista since 2019. Kelenic is just OK. Cano obviously sucked.

Saying the Mets got “Robinson Cano and Diaz and $20 million” completely omits the fact that they also assumed $120M of contract liability for a player on the downside of his career who had already been suspended for PEDs once.

The trade was a colossal, stupendous, and obvious-from-the-start failure. Cano was barely replacement level when he wasn’t suspended. And yes, there was one amazing season of Diaz (2022), but also one abysmal one (2019) with two other good ones in the middle.

This was one of the all-time dumbest trades the Mets ever made, and that’s even before we consider the fact that a cash crunched team could have instead used that money to extend or re-sign Zack Wheeler (who wanted to stay a Met) but the team didn’t make a fair offer.

It was a good "go for it" trade at the time, though it lacked a full commitment with other moves going forward. Covid didn't help. One of the best closers and a hall caliber hitter, even if an older one? Those are two good parts to have.

I hope they try some of that run scoring thing I've heard that other teams do from time to time.

eff Wilpon went all in on the 2019 season, pushing every last one of his chips into the middle of the table, because he knew that his days as Mets owner were numbered. He didn't give a shit about Cano's age or the enormous back end of Cano's contract or that he'd likely suck two or three years later and he could care less about trading away Kelenic's vast future potential because he knew he wouldn't be here when those problems materialized. That would be the next owner's problems to deal with.t

That's also why Alonso was on the opening day roster. Under normal circumstances, a million times out of a million, Alonso is held back for the requisite number of weeks and days so as to delay his free agency by a full calendar year. But Wilpon didn't give a flying fuck about the Mets future anymore.

Epilogue:

I complained about it at the time suggesting a young Andres Gimenez could the job

In the end the Mets obtained Edwin Diaz. The others were/are inconsequential

Please stop it already with the pity party. Poor little you. Why would anybody complain about a lineup?

Keith Raad (or the other guy) just called Randy Arozarena "Orazoreno."

He got it right when Arozarena got caught moments later.
