The Crane Pool Forum

No Mets have ever appeared in three postseasons for the club. That won't change this year, but hopefully it will next year. There are many players who have appeared in two postseasons: the 1969-1973 guys, the 1986-1988 guys, the 1999-2000 guys, and the 2015-2016 guys. Plus three players who don't fit any of those groups: David Wright (2006 and 2015), Jose Reyes (2006 and 2016) and Jacob deGrom (2015 and 2022). This year, there will be between five and nine players appearing in their second postseason as Mets. (The ninth one would potentially be Jeff McNeil, if the Mets last long enough.)

The Brewers will be a new postseason opponent for the Mets, their 15th. The first 14 are, in order, the Braves, Orioles, Reds, Athletics, Astros, Red Sox, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Giants, Cardinals, Yankees, Cubs, Royals, and Padres. If the Mets advance, the Phillies with be their 16th opponent.

Going into tonight's series, the Mets have played 92 postseason games, with an overall record of 52 and 40, .565.

In the Wild Card Series, the Mets have a record of 1 win and 3 losses (.250).
In the Division Series, the Mets have a record of 12 wins and 4 losses (.750).
In the League Championship Series, the Mets have a record of 26 wins and 17 losses (.605).

In the current format there have been three years of best-of-3 wild card rounds, 12 series in total. The Mets were involved in the only two that went three games. All ten of the others were 2-0 sweeps.

I think it’s more incredible to think that the division winner is now 2 for 6 in these series! And needless to say this was the first time one of the 4 division champions that lost their series garnered a win in their series.

In the first three years of the LCS, there were five three-game sweeps out of six series. (1969, Mets over Braves and Orioles over Twins. 1970, Reds over Pirates and Orioles over Twins. In 1971, the Orioles swept the A's and the Pirates beat the Giants in four.)

And so far, all four teams that got the first-round bye ended up losing the Division Series. (In 2022 the Phillies beat the Braves and the Padres beat the Dodgers, and in 2023 the Phillies again beat the Braves and the Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers.)

Let's hope this trend continues.

The Mets are about to begin their fifth trip to the Division Series. They've won all four of their previous Series. In 1999 against the Diamondbacks (Todd Pratt!), in 2000 against the Giants (Benny Agbayani! John Franco strikes out Barry Bonds!), in 2006 (a three-game sweep of the Dodgers) and in 2015 (a much more suspenseful Dodgers series, mostly remembered for Chase Utley's slide into Ruben Tejada.)
