Are we talking about Vlad Guerrero Jr.?

Supposedly the Mets have checked in on Guerrero. The Jays need to decide whether they will build around him and sign to a long-term deal, or watch him walk after the season.
Story said Mets could offer a nice prospect package to the Jays. He’s just 25. I’d want to trade then extend rather than watch him walk. But who knows?
Might be a reason they are in no rush to sign Pete.

Let's hope the X-rays are ok if this does happen

Vlad never played for the Rays.

Is this the ultimate Alonso leverage play?

I do think you at least need to give the impression of having a plan B, although I'm inclined to think the Jays are planning to contend this year.

I suspect that Santander is the Plan B. And the Mets don't want to continue dithering with Pete and have Santander slip through their fingers.

Mets to Boras: "We can strategically leak information too."

I've been operating under the idea that it was Bregman, and not Santander, as the plan B. I think those are the two most accomplished hitters left on the FA market. Based on 2024 WAR they are, anyway.
Don't know if it matters, but Bregman is also a Boras client. Santander is not, at least if you believe what the Googles tell you

And as for Vlad Jr., if he's going to be a Met, I think it's far more likely to happen in 2026 than 2025. Especially if Pete leaves and they go with a makeshift approach at first base in 2025.

Vlad Jr. doesn’t need to be talked about any longer — 14-year, $500 million extension with the Blue Jays widely reported as done.

One less potential suitor for Pete next year - and one less potential Mets target at Pete's position next year.

Pete will always have suitors.
He can always choose to accept a longer-term, more-money contract from any of them than he will ever get from the Mets. If we didn't offer him the six- or eight- or whatever-year deal Boras sought last year, we're certainly not going to offer it to him this year or any year, no matter how well his 2025 turns out. To stay with the Mets, he's going to be on a lucrative but very short term lease from here on in. Or lower his sights on the money he's seeking. But there are always going to be better offers out there.

It's a lot of money for a guy who's essentially had two elite seasons (2021, 2024) and one decent one (2022) in his first six years in the bigs

It would have been good to have seen him as a Met, but I never thought it was likely. Even as wealthy as Cohen is, I didn't think he'd commit to mega contracts in two consecutive winters. And it's good that Vlad will remain a Blue Jay. I like seeing a player commit to his original team for the long-term, and I'm also glad that Vlad won't be a Yankee or a Dodger.

Big money to spend to commit to the team that just got swept by the Mets.

And Yankee fans and Dodger fans are giddy that he's not going to be a Met.

With Vlad Jr. off the board, Pete clearly moves to the head of next season's Free Agent class of 1st baseman next season. Boras has to be salivating after Vlad Jr's deal.

Boy, I don't know. Vlad is much younger and we see what happened to Pete last year. Don't get me wrong, I hope Pete has a monster season. But I don't think a 32-year-old righthanded first baseman is going to get even half of that next year.
