Re: IGT 05/19/2024 Mets at Marlins - Time for Zuppa de Peche
Gary mentioned Dom Smith.
Hard to believe he was a first rounder.* They never even found a real role for him on the team, despite him being there for six years. Six years is equally stunning...the dude just never really turned the corner and was the epitome of 'blah.'
*not just 1st round, 11th overall.

It's very easy to believe he was a first-rounder.
I witnessed it.

Injury updates:
Ronny Mauricio—Expected to be out until at least Sep 1.
David Peterson—"Strikes out eight in rehab start: Peterson (hip) struck out eight over 5.1 scoreless innings in his latest rehab start Tuesday for Double-A Binghamton. He scattered five hits and didn't walk a batter. Peterson opened the season on the 60-day injured list while he completed his recovery from Nov. 6 surgery to address a torn labrum in his left hip, but the southpaw looks on pace to be activated on or around when he's first eligible May 27. He tossed 70 pitches (53 strikes) in Tuesday's outing, his first with Binghamton and the fourth outing overall of his rehab assignment. Peterson will likely shift his rehab assignment to Triple-A Syracuse and should require just one or two more tune-up starts before making his way back from the IL. The Mets have a full rotation at the moment, so Peterson -- who has a minor-league option remaining -- could end up sticking around with Syracuse upon his activation." Expected to be out until at least May 27.
Francisco Alvarez—"Gets stitches removed: Alvarez had the stitches removed Monday [May 6] from his surgically repaired left thumb, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Alvarez underwent surgery April 23 to address a torn UCL in the thumb on his glove hand. At the time his surgery was performed, the Mets estimated that Alvarez would need eight weeks to make a full recovery, so he appears unlikely to return from the injured list until around late June. A more precise target date for his return should come into focus once he resumes taking batting practice and performing defensive drills." Expected to be out until at least Jun 15.

The offensive tap was shut off when Alonso went into his homerun trot prematurely and barely made it into second.Frayed Knot wrote: ↑Sun May 19, 2024 3:48 pm Now up to six straight goose eggs following the opening inning barrage.

Gary's going a little too heavy on the 'decline' of Reed Garrett. The guy's still got a 0.78 ERA, Gary. Chill out a bit.

Garrett had all three of his pitches working nicely there.

More injury updates:
Shintaro Fujinami—"The Mets recalled Fujinami from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday and placed him on the 15-day injured list due to a right shoulder strain. Fujinami hadn't pitched for Syracuse since May 3 due to the injury. He had yet to make his 2024 debut for the Mets, but he was likely recalled and placed on the 15-day IL in the event New York needs to move him to the 60-day IL down the road to open up a 40-man roster spot." Expected to be out until at least Jun 1.
Kodai Senga—"Positive strides in bullpen session: Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said Thursday in an interview with SportsNet New York that Senga (shoulder) recently had "a good bullpen" session where he was "making some strides." Senga had to pull back on facing hitters while he dealt with mechanical issues, but he and the Mets were happy with how his last throwing session went. Stearns said he wasn't sure exactly when Senga would be ready to begin a rehab assignment, but it could happen relatively soon. The right-hander has been sidelined all season with a right posterior shoulder capsule strain." Expected to be out until at least Jun 11.
Brooks Raley—"Diagnosed with UCL strain: Manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that Raley was diagnosed with a UCL strain in his left elbow after undergoing further imaging, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. Mendoza noted that Raley's UCL is healing, but the Mets will shut him down for two weeks before re-evaluating him, at which point the team will determine next steps. The left-hander has been on the injured list since April 21 and was initially expected to be activated after the 15-day minimum, but he hasn't made any significant progress toward a return to throwing." Expected to be out until at least Jun 21.

Last batch of updates:
Tylor Megill—"Returning to rotation Monday: Megill (shoulder) is scheduled to return from the 15-day injured list to start Monday's series opener versus the Guardians in Cleveland, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. After exiting in his season debut March 31 with a right shoulder strain and landing on the IL, Megill is finally ready to make his second start with the Mets nearly seven weeks later. According to Puma, Megill said the injury was caused by the lower arm slot he used on his curveball, but the right-hander reported no issues with throwing his breaking pitches during his four-start minor-league rehab assignment. Megill most recently tossed 5.1 shutout innings and 74 pitches in his final rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on May 12, so he's not expected to be under any major workload restrictions as he steps back into the big-league rotation." Expected to be out until at least May 20.
Drew Smith—"Return pushed back again: Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that Smith won't be activated from the 15-day injured list Wednesday after recently experiencing a "pinch" in his right shoulder, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. He will have his return pushed back a second time because the Mets need length from their bullpen and Smith isn't ready to provide that yet. Smith is still able to continue throwing in spite of the setback, so he may not be ruled out for a return from the IL for Thursday's series finale in Philadelphia or at some point this weekend." Expected to be out until at least May 19.

After all, when was the last time you saw a 4-run 9th inning lead blown?

In all seriousness, I understand now why the Mets didn't ditch Garrett in the offseason.
