Twenty-One Prediction Fun: Pete Alonso
Twenty-One Prediction Fun: Pete Alonso
Hi, I'm Pete Alonso. I'm a big, strong dude that makes baseballs disappear like nobody in Mets history. That's exciting. But there's that problem with sluggers, that when homeruns become their game, the other aspects of their batting skills frequently fade, so when they aren't exploding baseballs into the sky, they aren't particularly productive at all.
I'm not that guy. At least, not yet. But I sure used 2020 to give a picture of what that guy might look like. But you know, if fifty bombs are in my bat, that may be a guy folks have to get used to living with. What more do you want? Eggs in your beer?
But there is another guy playing my position, and where I'm brutal, he's a little more refined, so he's faking it in left, and I may try occasionally faking it at third. And while it's a good problem to have, it could all go away if I could stop chasing that outside slider, or slow down just a little as a I load up to turn on a fastball.
Those were my two problems last year. Chasing sliders two feet off the plate and being too quick and getting under the fastball. If I can solve one of those probs, I'm an MVP candidate. And if I can't, I'm going to be hearing Dom's name a LOT. Till then, I'm gonna keep mashing.
How much mash? How much trash? That's the question you need to weigh, and then put your answer below.

I think having a batting coach with the team (instead of coaching remotely) will help Pete regain his rookie form. He'll get in-game immediate feedback, on an at bat by at bat basis when he's doing something wrong.
.268 - 45- 122, All Star, serious (top 5) MVP consideration.

Re: Twenty-One Prediction Fun: Pete Alonso
He basically had one bad month in a season that was messed up for everybody. .260/.360/.560, with 40 homers and 108 RBI.
Re: Twenty-One Prediction Fun: Pete Alonso
Even last year, he got on at a decent clip. So however lost in the woods and desperate he may get... he's probably not going to Rob Deer.
Something like 42 HRs, 90+ runs, 120+ RBI, .258/.355/.520, 3 WAR.

I'm a relative Pete skeptic and think he needs to #STFU about black unis.

Wins the first of a record eight consecutive NL MVP awards, thanks to a 48-HR season.

Totally agree on the hideous black unis. It's the worst part of Alonso's game, his brand. So STFU on the black unis, Pete, even if, sadly enough, those black unis look like they're headed for a revival.
Alonso's a real-deal HR hitter and he ended 2020 like historic 2019 Pete.
I say 41 HR's and better than 2020. 41 because 41 is the Met number for these times.

I don't wanna be too precise because you are probably right but *seems like* he had 1 good month overall, outta 3 or whatever. And his bad was really bad. I'm telling ya, I feel like my prediction is wildly optimistic.

Black uniforms are evil. Pete has a good but not great year and Dom Smith probably gets occasional time at first. 38/100/.255

Re: Twenty-One Prediction Fun: Pete Alonso
I have to say, I really enjoyed that video reel of his 2019 homeruns. I had forgotten what a huge portion of his early barrage was to center and right center.
What I hadn't forgotten, but was delighted to see again, was just how cruelly and violently he can destroy a baseball.

I dont like the black uniforms in and of themselves, but when you picture the somewhat successful Mets teams of the Piazza era, its hard for me NOT to picture them in black.

I'm okay with a throwback black uni worn for one game per homestand or something like that, but I never want to return to black as the main uniform color.

That's how I feel. I think Steve had hinted that they might be resurrected for Friday night home games or something like that.
Re: Twenty-One Prediction Fun: Pete Alonso
they would have to enter the field to "who let the dogs out" with the black uniforms on
Re: Twenty-One Prediction Fun: Pete Alonso
no numbers but...I think that Alonso will have more RBI than Nimmo will have Runs scored...and as much crap that Alonso gets for his defense, he's still a better choice as a 1B than Nimmo is as a CF
speaking of the Piazza era teams...
who wouldn't have been happy to see Mike Piazza to be able to play Pete Alonso defense at 1B? Alonso may not be Dom or Keith defensively, but for the power output, he's better than a lot of choices that we've seen at 1st over the years...
And other than his caught stealing, Jay Payton wasn't as bad of a CF choice as we were led to believe in 2000...only 60 strikeouts in 559 Plate Appearances, while hitting .291 with 17 HRs, 23 doubles and a triple (63 runs scored, 62 RBI)
