Twenty-One Prediction Fun: Luís Carpio

Yeah, I may smell like a Rumble Pony, but the world will always need solid-gloving Venezuelan infielders who can play every position. I'm Luis Carpio and I may have a little bit of growth left in my contact-hitting bat. I could totally be your utility guy sometime soon. I've been in this organization since I was 16 and, hey, I survived the first cut of camp, so you all should get used to hearing my name.

When you hear that name, what will it be in reference to?

I predict that when he goes to Venezuela, he'll spend time with his family and probably go out to eat.

Being sent to Binghamton.
He may finally reach AAA at the end of the year. And, he's still only 21 years old.
Sometimes it is tough to project light hitting minor leaguers, especially those who make contact. IIRC Bud Harrelson hit hit just about as well in the majors as he had in the minors.
As he matures and gets stronger, those softly hit balls may find their way through the infield and his versatility won't be his only plus.
But this is the year he'll have to show that improvement.

Carpio reminds me of Kurpiel.

When I woke up this morning, I never expected to have a Sergio Ferrer sighting.

I like that we learn that Berenguer is a pitcher and Brant is a firstbaseman, but nobody can be bothered to ask what Bill Greif does.

Also, everybody gets a shoulder patch except Kobel and Ferrer, and Berenguer gets a handsome armband.

Yeah, but a few years from now, you'll be turning tricks to get his autograff.

Luis was signed in the year in between Rosario and Gimenez, but was probably as strong as either of them defensively, exceeded only by Guillorme. But he lacked their pedigree, and a torn labrum and a seemingly low-ceiling bat kept prospect rankers from making much hay of him, and he generally needs a second trip to a level before establishing himself, but but his progress has been steady and his shoulder is now healthy. He had used up the years of his original contract, but the Mets re-signed him as a minor league free agent, which is a confidence booster.

BUT ... I'm just now realizing that the report that had him appearing in camp seems to have been wrong, so ... nevermind. But look for him to start in Bingo and work his way up to the 'Cuse before the year is out.

Some Ed Kurpiel stuff:

Acquired by the Mets 1n 1976 from St. Looey for Leon Brown and Brock Pemberton;
A local boy, Kurpiel graduated from Archbishop Molloy HS, (so did ex-Met Mike Baxter);
Was a phantom major-leaguer, called up by the Cards at the end of the '74 season, but never appeared in a major-league game. Was on the 25 man roster when Lou Brock broke Maury Wills' single season stolen base record;
Rumored to have hit perhaps the longest HR in professional baseball history. Really. Look it up if youse don't believe me.

Carpio also sounds like "Carpy", (Private Caparzo), the solider played by Vin Diesel in Saving Private Ryan who is gunned down by a German sniper while trying to rescue a little French girl from a destroyed residence.

Fucking Germans. Fucking Upham, too, right?

Speaking of fucking up 'Ham, well, that's what Carpio will do-- to the tune of a BABIP-fueled .300 average and .370 OBP-- before a late-season cup of cafe, COVID-rules allowing.
